You see, the primary purpose of the kiss cam is, in fact, simply to get the crowd involved during quieter periods of the game or during stoppages. Indeed, that was its original function when it came into being in early ’80s California. Kiss cams were also an entertaining means of showing off the potential of the big-screen technology that was only just being phased into sports stadiums at the time.
Things weren’t quite so simple for one pair at a March 2017 game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Brooklyn Nets, though. On that occasion, the kiss cam began to cycle through a bunch of doting couples as usual. And it seemed that all of them were happy to get in on the action and placate the watching crowd.
