And even the British royal family has been dragged into the Ripper narrative. One of Queen Victoria’s grandchildren, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, was mentioned as a possible suspect in a 1962 book by Philippe Jullian. This was grist to the mill for enthusiastic conspiracy theorists.
Later Stephen Knight’s Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution suggested that Prince Albert had a clandestine marriage to a humble Catholic girl at a time when it was illegal for monarchs to marry outside the Church of England and even had a child by her. Anyone who knew about the marriage was murdered, including the Ripper victims. The originator of this theory later admitted that it was a fabrication.
