On December 22, 1996, six-year-old JonBenet performed a festive routine at a Boulder mall. At 5:52 a.m. on December 26, Patsy placed a phone call to 911. Apparently, JonBenet had disappeared, and a lengthy ransom note had been left behind. Addressed to John, it detailed a request for $118,000 in cash – and threatened JonBenet’s life should the Ramseys decide to go to the police.
