About the same time, people in Longmont, a city some 30 miles outside Denver, began reporting debris dropping from the sky. But by the time that rescuers arrived on the scene, there was little that could be done. The plane had broken up in midair, and nobody on board had survived.
Sadly, 39 passengers and five crew members lost their lives that fateful day. The youngest victim was a boy just 13 months old, while the oldest was an 81-year-old woman named Lela McLain. As the country mourned the tragedy, investigators tried to piece together what had happened on board Flight 629.
