In fact, in June 2017 Miller was still receiving medical treatment for her injuries. And, as a consequence, she and her fiancé Jason Costello traveled that month to Indianapolis for an appointment at a specialist burn center. However, after the consultation Miller and Costello had had some free time. And what they chose to do with it would change her outlook on life for good.

Specifically, the couple decided to while away the hours by visiting the local zoo. It had reportedly been years since Miller had visited the menagerie, and she wanted to explore its new orangutan exhibit. It was here, however, where they met Rocky, an inquisitive orangutan.

Even before the couple’s visit, 12-year-old Rocky was already known to be an exceptional character. When he was eight years old, for instance, the orangutan had been the subject of some research into speech evolution. Furthermore, scientists had discovered that the sounds that Rocky made were closer to those created by human voices than any noises made by orangutans in the wild. For the first time, then, research showed that animals like Rocky could learn new sounds.
