On the afternoon of June 15, 2015, South African Jean-Claude Chanu was enjoying a bike ride through the Lake Eland Game Reserve when he stumbled upon something entirely out of the ordinary. Chanu’s first reaction was one of disbelief, but this didn’t stop him from eventually settling down enough to snap off a few pictures of his discovery. After all, it isn’t every day that you find a 12-and-a-half-foot African rock python by the side of a public trail – let alone a 12-and-a-half-foot African rock python that’s in the process of digesting a 30-pound porcupine.

Of course, at this point Chanu had no idea that the sizable snake had swallowed a spiny rodent. He just knew that whatever it was was something big enough to expand the python’s stomach seemingly to breaking point.

Indeed, Chanu told South African website eHowzit that the experience was “surreal” and “unbelievable” and that he had “never seen anything like that” before. And it wasn’t long until staff at the reserve caught wind of the find.
