California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has given the San Francisco Bay oil spill emergency status as clean up continued in the Bay area.

Schwarzenegger made an official visit to the area recently and promised resources to aid with the clean up. Hundreds of workers and volunteers have spent days cleaning up after a South Korean container ship hit the Bay Bridge recently and spilled thousands of tons of bunker oil.

Almost 20 birds have died from the oil spill and almost 80 more were found covered in oil. A triathlon was cancelled because of the oil in the water. Organizers said: “Due to the recent 58,000-gallon oil spill into the San Francisco Bay, Tri-California Events, the United States Coast Guard, and city officials have determined that the water conditions off Treasure Island make it unsafe to proceed with the swim leg of the San Francisco Triathlon.”
