Three-year-old Bobbie Hargreaves struggled to get to sleep each night, so her dad Adam decided to take action. He spent months transforming her bedroom into something extremely unusual – and you won’t believe how she reacted when the surprise was finally revealed.
Trying to get your child into bed in the evening can be tough, and in some cases bedtime can turn into every parent’s nightmare. Children might refuse to go to bed on time or at all, which is likely to be a cause stress to families who know that making sure their child gets a good night’s sleep is very important.
Bobbie Hargreaves is a little girl who used to cause her parents a similar problem. Her mum, Adam’s wife Leah, spoke to the Daily Mail after their story went viral. “Before she didn’t want to go to bed,” Leah explained. “It was a case of trying to get her to bed at all, let alone on time.”
Adam, a supermarket worker who lives in Yorkshire, in the north of England, decided to try something new. And although struggling to get a child to get into bed is a common issue, Adam’s approach to tackling the problem was very unusual.
In order to stop Bobbie’s bedtime tantrums, Adam decided to use an existing talent to his advantage. The Yorkshire dad has always held a passion for art going back to his school days, but even so, the transformation of his daughter’s room was extraordinary.
Now, a redecoration of this scale was no snap decision. In fact, Adam had been planning on painting her room for a while. But once it became clear that Bobbie was having trouble sleeping, he decided it was time to get to work.
When it comes to thinking about what amuses small children, there’s one thing that often springs to mind – and that’s Disney. The studio has created a number of well-loved characters and Bobbie is a massive fan of pretty much all of them.
Adam thought it would be a good idea to transform his daughter’s bedroom, but it wasn’t easy. “I’d been planning to paint her room for about two years,” he told the Daily Mail. “But the painting itself took around three months, or 300 hours to be precise.”
Not only did Adam paint a Disney mural in Bobbie’s room, but he also created a time-lapse video of himself doing so – and uploaded it online. This footage, which he posted to his Facebook page and onto YouTube in August 2016, shows the transformation from start to finish.
The footage introduces viewers to Bobbie and shows Adam working on two of her bedroom walls. Over the course of the clip, you can see Disney characters such as Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Mufasa from The Lion King take shape.
As more and more characters are revealed, the full impact of this amazingly detailed artwork becomes clear. There’s no doubt that this is a beautifully designed wall. But, more importantly, what does Bobbie think of it?
Adam made sure to capture Bobbie’s reaction to the transformation, and the video ends with Bobbie sitting in her new room with a blindfold on. She takes it off and is left completely speechless at first. Bobbie then manages to cry out, “Thank you,” before running off to her dad, who’s behind the camera.
Thankfully, the paintings aren’t just pretty to look at – they’ve done their intended job as well. “I love it. She’s going to bed every time now,” said Leah. “Before, she didn’t want to go to bed. It was a case of trying to get her to bed at all, let alone on time,”
The time-lapse video showcasing Adam’s work was a huge hit online and has been viewed on his Facebook page – titled Bespoke Art – 11 million times. In addition, the clip was picked up by news outlets around the world and has been shared on more than 200,000 occasions.
And even though the video was posted years ago, the clip continues to be shared. As a result, Adam uploaded the footage again this month, thanking all those who have supported him. He wrote, “Can’t believe it’s been 2 years already and my video is still going round, hopefully inspired many people to be the best they can be for their children.”
What’s more, the unexpected response that Adam received to his post has now led him to consider a different career. Although art was a subject he’d enjoyed while studying, it wasn’t until this video went viral that he had the confidence to take it further.
Leah believes that her husband’s talent could turn into something more. “We’re now looking into getting him sorted and making Bespoke Art his job,” she said. “It’s scary but exciting, and I’m a bit dubious as to whether it’s just a craze or not, so I’m staying level-headed.”
However, Leah wasn’t always so encouraging. In fact, the first time she became aware of Adam’s passion for art was when she came home to discover he had painted a room – and she wasn’t impressed. But Leah soon softened when she saw how talented her husband was.
Adam is certainly looking forward to future opportunities. “Working self-employed is something I have been building towards,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to take it forward and build a portfolio, which I think I have got now.”
“Disney characters are something I get asked to do a lot. I’m quite versatile, though, with what I can do,” Adam added. And while this may have turned into a potential business, let’s not forget the original intention. It was an unusual way to help get a child to sleep, but it was certainly effective.
