Smith didn’t plan to be the one watching over his Wichita Falls, Texas, neighborhood that day in December 2016. But the boy – who has siblings of his own – felt right away that something was amiss with the girl on the scooter, young enough to be his little sister.
At first, Smith told KAUZ, he thought the older man who approached the girl was “her cousin or somebody.” But their interaction seemed out of the ordinary for family members. “She was riding her scooter and he picked her up and started walking,” Smith said.
And he knew what he saw was a terrifying experience for the seven-year-old in the man’s arms. “If I was a little girl, I would be scared, too,” Smith said. But rather than run away in the face of fear, Smith instead went to find help. He needed someone he trusted, someone who would know what to do.
