The Sierra Club has just sent us a press release. They are backing a high profile campaign protesting against Fox News’ anti-environmental propaganda. The self-proclaimed home of ‘fair and balanced’ news regularly claims that climate change is a hoax, and on one occasion compared Al Gore to Goebbels.
This is despite the fact that Rupert Murdoch, CEO of Fox’s parent company the News Corporation recently announced that his companies will be going carbon neutral. The move, he said, made ‘business sense’.
The campaign is accusing Murdoch of hypocrisy: “Fox consistently spreads misinformation about global warming and denies the problem exists,” said Sierra Club executive director Carl Pope.
“We have a very real, urgent problem that scientists tell us we need to respond to immediately. The fact that Fox is ignoring widely accepted science on global warming is irresponsible and dangerous. Fox is effectively accelerating global warming by delaying efforts to solve the problem.”
The coalition organising the campaign are calling on Home Depot, a company that claims to care about the environment to stop advertising on Fox TV. “Any company that cares about the environment should be disturbed by Fox’s consistent pattern of spreading misinformation about global warming and should not support Fox with advertising dollars,” said director Robert Greenwald, a leading figure in the campaign.
