Senator Domenici: single biggest barrier to US renewable energy bill

The Sierra Club is leading a campaign in New Mexico to ask Senator Domenici to support a renewable energy bill, generating millions in additional income for land owners and creating thousands of local jobs.

In June, Senator Domenici single-handedly blocked the passage of a Renewable Energy Standard in the Senate that would have mandated a 15% renewable energy requirement by the year 2022 – a relatively conservative target when compared with the EU’s plan of 20% by 2020. As the ranking Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Senator Domenici has the opportunity to drive meaningful action to increase America’s energy independence, curb global warming and create a new energy economy, but chose instead to side with the big utility companies and push for billions in subsidies to the oil, gas, coal and nuclear industries.

Speaking on climate change, the Senator stated that “I am aware that many in the scientific community are warning us that something needs to be done…We still have a lot of questions before us, though”.

The Sierra Club believes that an overwhelming majority of Americans want to move in a new direction on energy, and are upset about the high cost of gas and US dependence on foreign oil. They are now asking him to support the bill, which was passed by the House of Representatives, when it goes to a House-Senate Conference for consolidation in the autumn.
