The 1981 union of Charles and Diana was billed as a “fairytale wedding,” but in truth was far from it. Later events proved beyond all shadow of a doubt that the marriage hadn’t been a good idea from the start. Everyone had high hopes when it took place, and it was, of course, an absolutely lavish affair. However, some of the scandalous details about that day are only coming out now, decades after the fact.
20. Neither party really wanted to be there
Of course, it’ll never be confirmed by the Palace, but allegedly both parties wanted out of the wedding. According to the 2015 biography Charles: Heart of a King, the prince told a confidant “I can’t go through with it,” just hours before the nuptials. And it’s long been reported that Diana asked her sisters if there was any way to not do it. However, they told her that she couldn’t back out now, as her “face was on the tea towels.”
19. Diana had a back-up wedding dress
Diana’s second wedding dress was so secret that even she didn’t know about it. Her dress designers, David and Elizabeth Emanuel, whipped another frock up just in case something went wrong with the first. “We didn’t try it on Diana. We never even discussed it,” Hello! magazine quoted Emanuel as saying in 2018. “We wanted to make sure that we had something there; it was for our own peace of mind, really.”
