And while the organizers had only minimal experience with concert promotion, they still managed to book some of the era’s biggest names. Alongside the aforementioned David Crosby – performing with CSNY – the festival also featured heavyweights The Who, Santana, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.

In total, 32 bands and artists played at Woodstock; however, other big names hoping to perform weren’t able to make it. Bob Dylan missed the festival due to the hospitalization of his child, while John Lennon was unable to obtain a U.S. entry visa.
