Series seven, then, found the unfortunate ex-knight languishing in the Oldtown Citadel under the care of the Maesters. However, his luck turned around in the second episode – Samwell Tarly, one of the most beloved and reliable characters in the series, happens to be there as well. And after rummaging around the forbidden section of the Citadel libraries, he finds a possible cure for greyscale. But this being Game of Thrones, it’s an utterly gross one.

And viewers were shocked. “Was this the most disgusting Game of Thrones scene yet?” the Telegraph asked. Indeed, it seemed the directors of the show had agreed wholeheartedly and added a joke at their viewers’ expense. “Whichever director decided to switch from slicing greyscale off directly to eating a pie … my worst enemy,” one fan tweeted. “Tonight was a bad night to eat while watching GoT,” posted another.

Yes, Sam’s cure for the greyscale – and bear in mind that neither anesthetic nor antibiotics exist in Westeros – involved literally scraping the weeping, infected skin off his patient. He whipped out some surgical implements, handed Jorah some leather to scream into, and simply started slicing into him. And audiences got to see every agonizing detail of what went into the skin and what leaked out. Ewwwww.
