But in spite of the increasing awareness of the threat posed by hippos, there is little to be done to solve the problem. The animals are aggressive by nature and possess several attributes which make them a deadly force. For a start they are simply massive, with each hippo growing to an average of one and a half tones. Additionally, each hippo has a huge set of sharp teeth and is capable of barreling along at 19 mph on land – easily capable of outrunning a man.
But while Irwin had plenty of reasons to fear the hippo, he was actually much more afraid of another creature. Even though the hippo is heavy, aggressive and deadly, Irwin was deeply uncomfortable about working with the lightweight and seemingly lovable parrot.
