Another alarming incident happened when the ISS had a near-miss encounter with a piece of space junk. Kelly recalled the episode in an interview with the magazine Texas Monthly, “At the time, you think, if we get hit, we will be vaporized. There’s no two ways about it; it would be like a nuclear explosion. But it’s not something worth dwelling on.”
Not all Kelly’s revelations about life in space are quite so disturbing, some of them are just kind of… well, gross. Going to the toilet, for example, is more complicated in space. “Recently I had to clean up a gallon-sized ball of urine mixed with acid,” Kelly revealed to a Reddit user in one of the online community’s ask-me-anything sessions. “The acid is added to the urine so the urine doesn’t damage the machinery that moves it through the system. It keeps it from clogging up the system.” Fascinating and foul at the same time.
