She took her time to gently caress the side of Norris’ face with her finger.

In a state of shock and awe, Aversano continued to touch Norris’ mouth, nose and eyebrows. “This is the face that I grew up with,” she said. It was also originally the face of a man who died in 2012.

Of course, Aversano asked permission before feeling Norris’ face.

And, in fact, this emotional scene was part of the initial encounter between Rebekah Aversano and the man who had been given her deceased sibling’s face in a groundbreaking transplant operation. It was an incredible gift for which Norris had waited almost 18 years.

Norris, however, was happy to let Aversano touch her brother’s skin.

For Aversano, though, the story began one tragic night in 2012. Her younger brother Joshua was just 21 years old at the time and looking forward to a career with the United States Marine Corps.
