There were other notable disappearances over the years too. For instance, in 1945 five Avenger torpedo bombers – referred to as Flight 19 – disappeared while completing a training flight over the Caribbean. Interestingly, one of the search and rescue planes sent after them also disappeared.
Then, in 1950, the idea of a strange force operating around Bermuda made its first appearance. In fact, a journalist called Edward Van Winkle Jones described the disappearances as a “puzzle” baffling marine men. Another article published just two years later marked the area out as a triangle.
It was this second article, written by George X. Sand, that first suggested America might be dealing with a supernatural force. He and other observers created links between disasters such as Flight 19 and concluded that something was up.
