After the incident, as is customary in Chile, the Navy’s footage was handed over to a government organization, the Comité de Estudios de Fenómenos Aéreos Anómalos (CEFAA), or the Committee for the Study of Anomalous Air Phenomena. CEFAA was founded in 1997 with the express purpose of investigating, and trying to explain, unidentified aerial phenomena.
CEFAA boss Ricardo Bermúdez – a retired airforce general – and CEFAA nuclear scientist Mario Avila wasted no time in interviewing the two-man helicopter crew. Avila told The Huffington Post, “I was very impressed by these witnesses. They were highly trained professionals with many years’ experience, and they were absolutely certain that they could not explain what they saw.”
