It’s often easy to take it for granted that many professional sportspeople are really risking life and limb while chasing their dreams. But here’s a look at 20 fatal incidents that prove the pursuit of glory can sometimes come at the ultimate price.
20. Nik Zoricic
Yugoslavia-born Nik Zoricic was one of the skiing world’s many fatalities. In 2012 he crashed head-first into a netting that lined the course of a World Cup race in Switzerland. Later, the 29-year-old’s family insisted that the course was to blame and threatened several skiing governing bodies with a lawsuit if they failed to investigate the matter.
19. James Morgan
Winter Olympian James “Jimmy” Morgan lost his life after the four-man bobsled he was driving crashed coming out of a turn during the 1981 FIBT World Bobsled Championships in Italy. To add to the tragedy, Morgan’s brother John was serving as commentator for ABC at the event. He therefore saw Morgan’s head slamming into the wall with his own eyes.
