18. Owen Hart
Canadian wrestler Owen Hart died while competing as the Blue Blazer during a 1999 pay-per-view event. The incident occurred during a dramatic stunt in which the WWE wrestler was to be lowered into the wrestling ring. Tragically, his harness released too early, and he fell 90 feet to his death.
17. Nicholas Bochatay
Competitive speed skiers achieve speeds of more than 120 miles per hour, so the occasional fatal crash is perhaps inevitable. But Switzerland’s Nicholas Bochatay became the sport’s most high-profile victim in 1992 when he collided with a snow-grooming vehicle. This was during a practice session ahead of the Albertville Winter Olympics in France.
16. Nodar Kumaritashvili
Almost two decades after Nicholas Bochatay’s tragic death, another Winter Olympian died shortly before he was due to compete too. In fact, Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili held a practice run on the day of 2010’s Vancouver opening ceremony. Sadly, he died on the way to hospital after slamming into a metal barrier near the finish line.
