15. Wouter Weylandt
Belgian Wouter Weylandt joined the list of more than 100 cyclists to have lost their lives in competition. In fact, the 36-year-old died as he raced in the Giro d’Italia of 2011. He struck a concrete guardrail with his foot and bike pedal and was consequently thrown into the road.
14. Andrew Simpson
Five years after winning a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, sailor Andrew Simpson died while preparing for the 34th Americas Cup in 2013. The 36-year-old got into trouble when his catamaran sank and broke up in San Francisco Bay. In fact, he was trapped under the boat for ten minutes – with fatal consequences.
