18. Sir Bill Gammell

However, Snow’s post-rugby riches look relatively modest compared to those of former Scotland international Bill Gammell. After injury put paid to his sporting career, Gammell – who is the son of an investment banker – founded Cairn Energy. Thanks to a shrewd investment in a Rajasthan field, moreover, the oil and gas company is now reportedly worth around $2 billion. And as if that wasn’t enough, the magnate was even knighted in 2006.

17. Franco Harris

Former Pittsburgh Steelers star Franco Harris spent 13 years playing in the NFL. But during his era, the ’70s, the league wasn’t paved with gold in the way that it is today. Harris was therefore forced to seek his fortune elsewhere after retiring, and he did so by founding a bakery business – the USP of which was a nutritionally-enriched doughnut. Today, then, the ex-fullback is said to be worth around $3 million.

16. Heath Shuler

One-time Washington Redskins quarterback Heath Shuler failed to live up to his early college potential during his time in the NFL, playing just four seasons before retiring from the sport for good. However, he made much more of an impression when he entered the political realm, as he became the U.S. congressman for North Carolina in 2007.
