Once inside the crater, Kourounis had to contend with not only high temperatures, but also the ever-present threat of acid rain. Indeed, the Ambrym volcano is one of the planet’s biggest creators of sulfur dioxide, which combines with regular rain to make sulfuric acid – and that’s potentially strong enough to eat through clothing. The daredevils were prepared for this prospect, though, since the area experiences high levels of rainfall.
