NASA cameras hundreds of miles out into space are beaming live footage from the International Space Station (ISS) back to Earth. But the stream suddenly reveals an unknown object which is allegedly traveling at the same pace as the vast satellite while it hurtles around our planet. Operators then zoom in on the anomaly, and it seems as if the experts are acknowledging its presence. Could this finally be evidence of alien life?
Back on Earth, a dedicated UFO hunter later spots the strange object in NASA’s live feed and uploads the footage to his YouTube channel. Soon, the internet is full of speculation on what the anomaly might be. Has a craft from another planet really been captured on video – or is something else at play?
According to some observers, the object appeared to be something out of this world – a ship unlike anything ever seen on this planet before. But others suggested that something disappointingly prosaic might be behind the otherworldly display. Meanwhile, theories about the strange anomaly grew ever more bizarre as time passed.
Had NASA really captured the smoking gun that UFO enthusiasts have spent decades searching for? Or was this perhaps top-secret military technology on loan from the mysterious Area 51? Whatever the truth, this enigmatic footage has reignited the conversation about life on other planets
The ISS has been home to a rotating crew of astronauts for almost 20 years – making it the longest continually inhabited facility in Earth’s orbit. And its residents have been privy to a side of our universe that few are lucky enough to experience. But have there been any close encounters of the third kind?
The ISS was first conceived in the 1980s as the Freedom project – a United States-led attempt to establish a long-term presence in space. The following decade, however, the station was redesigned in order to incorporate involvement from other countries. Russia was initially planning to build its own rival facility, but eventually the two nations decided to join forces.
In 1998 the first modules of what would become the ISS were launched into Earth’s orbit, and two years later the initial crew members arrived. Amazingly, the station has remained inhabited ever since, although it’s been subject to various repair work and upgrades over the years. But what do these astronauts do all day as they float hundreds of miles above the Earth?
According to NASA, the ISS is one of the first steps towards the exploration of other planets. There, astronauts learn about the practicalities of living in space in the hope that their work will inform future missions reaching further into the universe.
The experts on board the ISS also conduct research that benefits people living back on Earth. They have spearheaded a number of developments in both the ecological and medical fields over the years. But for many, the most fascinating thing about the station is how close it might bring its residents to alien life.
Of course, NASA has never shied away from the prospect of life on other planets. In the 1970s, for example, it funded the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), which used antennae to hunt for signals in space. And even today, NASA’s rovers scan planets such as Mars looking for evidence of biological activity.
NASA’s official investigations have yet to find any conclusive evidence of alien life, though its missions have resulted in some compelling testimonies over the years. Back in 1965 Jim McDivitt was in orbit around Earth during the Gemini 4 mission when he saw an unknown object floating through space. The astronaut himself maintained that it was probably space debris, but this has never been proven.
Four years later rumors then began to spread that Neil Armstrong had seen a UFO after Apollo 11 successfully landed on the Moon. And even today, this story is repeated in certain circles. Interestingly, Buzz Aldrin appeared to confirm the sighting in a 2005 interview with the Science Channel, although he would later claim that his comments had been misrepresented.
But surely if there was alien activity close to Earth, the ISS would have picked up on it over the years? According to some, there have actually been multiple occasions in which astronauts have apparently detected anomalies from the station. In 2005, for instance, American astronaut Leroy Chiao said that he spotted a strange formation of lights while on a spacewalk.
“I saw some lights that seemed to be in a line and it was almost like an upside-down check mark, and I saw them fly by and thought it was awfully strange,” Chiao recalled in a 2014 interview with a HuffPost US journalist. For his part, the astronaut is not convinced that the anomaly was extra-terrestrial in origin, though his sighting was featured in a television documentary.
Then, in 2013 NASA TV reported that another American astronaut called Christopher Cassidy had allegedly witnessed a UFO from the ISS. But it was quickly identified as debris from the station itself on this occasion. In fact, up until recently the evidence of alien life coming from the ISS has seemed less than persuasive.
Then, in April 2014 the ISS launched the High Definition Earth-Viewing (HDEV) experiment. This provided live footage of space, which was beamed back down to Earth from cameras mounted outside the station. As a result, millions of people around the world tuned in to catch a glimpse of this incredible sight.
Keen UFO hunters were among those scanning the aforementioned footage – searching it for anything out of the ordinary that HDEV might have detected. Over the years, these amateur detectives have enjoyed a surprising amount of apparent success. For instance, in 2019 a YouTuber known as Streetcap1 noticed something unusual on NASA’s live feed.
In a video uploaded to YouTube, Streetcap1 posted footage from HDEV showing what appears to be an unknown craft hovering close to the ISS. Meanwhile, the conspiracy theorist Of Sound Mind and Body comments in the clip, “The object is completely illuminated by the Sun and it is very hard not to notice its bizarre shape.”
In a sinister twist, the same individual also claimed that the live feed had been deliberately cut off by NASA in order to conceal the strange sighting. So far, however, the agency has yet to release an official statement concerning the footage. Then, in February 2020 another eagle-eyed observer alleged that he’d made a startling discovery.
This time, the individual poring over NASA’s live feed was Scott Waring, who is behind the YouTube channel UFO Sightings Daily. According to the alien enthusiast, he began the project back in 2010 as a counterpoint to the ridicule that his passion often received in the press. Waring explained in the “about” section of the site, “I had the single intention of defending those who say they have seen UFOs…”
Since then, Waring has uploaded hundreds of videos to UFO Sightings Daily – the majority of which appear to feature otherworldly encounters. Some footage, he claims, shows extra-terrestrial creatures on Earth, while others purport to contain evidence of biological life on other planets. And if that wasn’t enough, the channel also features alleged proof of buildings on Mars and alien craft flying through space.
Waring also maintains the website E.T. Database, where he hosts additional footage of strange phenomena. In fact, his output is so prolific that in 2019 he posted almost 400 separate claims. And in 2020 he has shown no sign of slowing down – with nearly 250 articles shared in the first six months of the year.
But where does Waring get his information? Well, he appears to have access to a seemingly limitless supply of video evidence, according to a 2017 campaign on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo. In fact, he was confident enough to promise an exclusive perk of allegedly never-before-seen alien or UFO footage to any donor pledging $500 or more.
At the time, Waring’s Indiegogo page said that he was an English teacher and was living in New Taipei, Taiwan. But he hoped to raise extra funds to help support his YouTube channel, which during this period was apparently drawing 40,000 viewers a day. Specifically, his goal was to raise enough to purchase a new high-end computer.
“I often analyze NASA, ESA and other space photos in search of alien ships, artifacts and evidence,” Waring wrote on his Indiegogo page. “Color and quality of the screen is everything. Also, I deal with a lot of government conspiracies and I can’t afford to get a virus.” Thankfully for the UFO community, the campaign was successful, and the alien hunter was able to purchase a new computer for his endeavors.
Waring often relies on NASA’s HDEV feed to deliver the anomalous footage, according to his YouTube channel. In fact, the UFO enthusiast claims that when the agency threatened to remove their cameras, he spearheaded a campaign to save them. Against all the odds, it would seem that he was successful.
Then in February 2020 Waring uploaded a new video to UFO Sightings Daily. The nine minute-long clip contains sped up footage from NASA’s live stream, and it appears to show a mysterious object flying below the ISS. Interestingly, the strange anomaly is also keeping pace with the station on its journey through Earth’s orbit.
The object is barely visible early on in the footage – just a small, grey speck slightly detached from the main bulk of the ISS. But the camera zooms in as the video progresses. And from this angle, it becomes clear that – whatever it is – the object does not appear to be a part of the station itself.
Moreover, Waring claims that it was NASA’s camera operators – rather than himself – who chose to zoom in on the anomaly. If true, this suggests that the agency became aware of the object at the time and adjusted the cameras to take a better look. However, there have been no official reports regarding the strange sighting.
“They are as baffled by it as I am,” Waring claims in his video. “They don’t know what it is or why it is there.” Similarly, the UFO enthusiast struggled to identify the object. He explains, “It looks like it’s in a cone shape. I’ve never seen a module in this shape.” But if the anomaly was not something associated with the ISS, then what was it?
Waring also posted a link to the original footage taken from the NASA live stream in comments below the video. This 22-minute clip shows a much slower version of events, and the strange object can still be seen. Additionally, it features agency workers talking over the stream, although they do not appear to refer to the anomaly.
However, Waring alleges in his video that the individuals overheard on the live footage may have been employing stealth tactics to discuss the object. He claims, “They don’t talk about it. They continue talking and sometimes they say coordinates, they say coordinates to things, and I believe that might be a secret code to the location of this object.”
According to Waring, the object was vast – around the size of a bus. And if the video is to be believed, it traveled through space at roughly the same speed as the ISS, which covers more than four miles per second. Shockingly, at the end of the footage, the anomaly can be seen shooting upwards into space and then disappearing off camera in a flash of green light.
At first, Waring claims, he suspected that the object could be a spacecraft on its way to or from the ISS, but its trajectory suggested otherwise. In the video, he says, “I was expecting this object to go down into the Earth’s atmosphere because it’s a capsule. But it’s not a capsule. Any capsule would be going lower and lower and lower into Earth’s orbit.”
Moreover, NASA workers in the original video do not mention any activity at the ISS that might have explained the anomaly. But if it was not a capsule arriving at or departing the station, might it have been a satellite sent up from Earth? According to the UFO enthusiast, the object did not meet this description either.
“This doesn’t look like a satellite,” Waring explains. “It doesn’t have solar panels. It doesn’t have any radar dishes on it. This looks like a stealth device.” So, with all the obvious culprits seemingly out of the equation, what had actually been captured on this snippet of live feed from the ISS?
In the video, Waring speculates that the object may have been a classified U.S. Air Force project inspired by alien technology kept at the legendary Area 51. Located in Nevada, this top-secret government base has long been associated with tales of recovered UFOs. However, he states that he believes the anomaly is a genuine extra-terrestrial craft.
Many fans left messages praising Waring’s investigative skills in the comments section under his video. However, beneath the original NASA footage, some of the feedback was more critical of the UFO hunter’s dramatic conclusions. And according to one user, the mystery has already been solved.
The poster alleged that the anomaly was actually an Inter Orbit Communication System – a Japanese component that was previously attached to the ISS. In fact, they claimed to have seen evidence that the station jettisoned the part on the same day that Waring’s video was uploaded. The user wrote, “I know it’s not the fun answer but it’s the real one.”
Meanwhile, other sources have suggested that the anomaly could have been X-37B – a remote-controlled U.S. aircraft currently on a classified mission. So, which is it: alien technology, space junk or top-secret military craft? At the moment, NASA has neither confirmed nor denied any of the theories surrounding the strange footage. And as they wait for answers, people such as Waring continue to search the skies.
