There’s no denying that technology has made life so much simpler in the past couple of decades. But there are still a few little daily frustrations that really should have been taken care of by now. Thankfully, some of them have – you just didn’t know it. Yes, as soon as you see these ingenious inventions, you’ll understand why you need them in your life.
20. Storage chair
Regular skiers will know the plight of coming into a restaurant laden down with all your gear, such as your hat, helmet and gloves. Trying to find somewhere to put it all without subsequently leaving it behind later can be tricky. Unless you’re at this restaurant, that is, where the chairs have built-in storage. Genius.
19. Elevator rain alert
Sure, windows are a great gateway into the weather of the outside world – most of the time. But if you’re on the basement level, it’s good to have some indication of whether it’s raining before you step out and get soaked. It’s awesome, then, that this elevator in Osaka, Japan has a visual display to clue you in.
18. Mall charging point
Cell phone batteries are basically our worst enemy these days. Thanks to all those obviously vital apps running simultaneously, your battery level can go from 100 to zero faster than some cars can go zero to 60. It’s totally ingenious, then, that some places – such as this shopping mall – have dedicated charging points, so you can shop worry-free.
17. Drink smartphone charger
Of course, it’s not always possible to be near a charging point, or even a plug socket. But if you have a drink to hand, then this device may come in useful. Indeed, it can charge your smartphone simply through temperature. A lukewarm drink won’t do, unfortunately – it has to be hot or cold. But you’re never too far from a coffee…
16. Overlapping curtain rail
Really, we’re not sure why this isn’t just standard procedure all over the world. Yes, the curtain rail in this hotel room overlaps, so you can draw them shut without worrying about a gap. After all, there’s little more frustrating than being woken up early by the sunrise peeking through your drapes.
15. Ice bar
In warmer climates, chugging your drink before it loses its refreshing temperature can be a race against the clock. Unless you’re in this establishment in Utah, that is, which has an ice strip running around the bar. Indeed, you’ll never have to worry about the horrors of a warm beer again.
14. Rotatable benches
Public seating is all well and good if the weather’s stayed dry. But the slightest bit of rainfall basically renders benches useless. Whoever was behind these particular benches, then, must be an absolute mastermind. Yes, with the spin of a handle, the seating area can shift around, so you’ll always have a dry patch to rest on.
13. Built-in extension leads
Seriously, these should just be standard in every home. The cable remains in the socket if you don’t need the extension, but you can also roll it out if you need a longer wire. It’s one of those things that’s so simple, you can’t believe nobody thought of it earlier.
12. Best guess toaster
At first glance, this just looks like any other toaster. But take a closer look at those functions. Yes, that’s right – there’s a button for “a bit more.” It’s hardly the most scientific of measurements, but then, sometimes all you want from your toast is for it to be “a bit more” done.
11. Four-sided alarm clock
We all know the pain of rolling over in the morning to the sound of your alarm, only to not actually know what time it is because it’s facing the other way. It seems so simple, then, to have a clock on every side of it. Simple, but absolutely brilliant.
10. Multiple-choice hand soap
We guess this would only really apply in restaurants that served finger food, but it’s an awesome idea nonetheless. After all, if you are about to chow down on a burger and fries, you don’t really want the scent of white mulberry and shea butter (or whatever fancy soap restaurants use) getting in the way of your meat’s tender flavor.
9. Non-drip mug
We don’t know about you, but we’re forever cleaning down surfaces after making coffee. Yes, those drips are pretty much the bane of our life. So, you’ll understand when we tell you that we really, really need this mug. And we’re pretty sure you do too. After all, it’s a shockingly simple solution to a universal problem.
8. Easy-clean hairbrush
Take a look at your hairbrush. Chances are, it’s covered in hair, some of which is probably months if not years old. We don’t blame you – nobody wants to spend their valuable time disentangling a hairbrush. This solution, then, is just genius. Really, why isn’t this available everywhere?
7. Customizable fitting room lighting
Trying on outfits can be a nightmare. After all, the harsh lighting of most fitting rooms is unlike anywhere you’re actually going to wear your clothes. Thankfully, this store clearly gets it. Yes, there are different settings for the lights, including “evening” and “outdoor,” so you can shop with confidence.
6. Smartphone viewing port
How many times have you been browsing through Twitter at the dinner table, only to spill something all over your expensive smartphone? Disaster, right? If this sounds like a sales pitch, trust us, it’s not. We’re just blown away by the ingenuity of this table. And let’s be honest, it practically sells itself. We want one, anyway…
5. Travel toilet roll
Toilet paper generally isn’t high on the list of things to pack when traveling. Indeed, it’s pretty safe to assume that most restrooms will have some. But if you really want to cover your back, this normal-sized toilet roll includes a smaller, travel-sized roll inside it. As Hannah Montana would say, it’s the best of both worlds.
4. Ink meter
Imagine a world where you’re never surprised by a pen suddenly running out of ink. Now, rejoice, because you’re living in that world. Yes, this pen has levels that tell you how many pages you can write with the remaining ink. All we need now is for it to be a common feature in all pens…
3. Backseat air mattress
Cars are hardly the comfiest things to sleep in, but an air mattress properly designed for a backseat changes everything. We’re not out here advocating living in your car, of course. But if you’re a passenger on a long road trip, this is basically what heaven looks like. And we can think of other uses for it, too…
2. Key locator
There are countless ways to track down a lost or misplaced smartphone. But your keys are usually less hi-tech, and as a result, can be a lot harder to find. Unless you have one of these keychains, that is, which has built-in GPS – so you can track your keys using your phone. As long as you don’t lose that, too.
1. Solar phone charger
If you don’t have a power bank, plug socket or hot drink to hand, chances are you do have the sun. After all, weather permitting, it’s hard to misplace. This solar-powered phone charger, then, is probably exactly what you need to combat your smartphone’s battery woes. At least if none of the other options suffice, that is.
