The Beauty Icon Everyone Was Talking About The Year You Were Born

Remember when Brigitte Bardot lit up the screen? Or when Jackie Kennedy proved that First Ladies could be super-stylish, too? Perhaps your era was the rise of the supermodel spearheaded by the likes of Elle Macpherson and Cindy Crawford? Here’s a look at the ultimate beauty icon each year from 1995 all the way back to 1955.

41. Alicia Silverstone (1995)

Alicia Silverstone was dubbed the voice of her generation thanks to her magnetic lead performance in classic teen movie Clueless. The actress left everyone falling in love with valley girl Cher thanks to her natural charm, comic timing, and blonde beauty. Sadly, Silverstone struggled to reach such glorious heights again.

40. Pamela Anderson (1994)

How many teenage boys didn’t have a poster of Pamela Anderson on their wall in the mid-1990s? The buxom blonde had viewers across the world admiring her bikini-clad form in appearances in the rescue drama Baywatch. And in 1994 she bagged her first leading film role in the rather more forgettable Raw Justice.

39. Kate Moss (1993)

Whereas her supermodel predecessors had always presented themselves as the height of glamor, Kate Moss helped to bring something a little down-and-dirty to the runway. Calvin Klein was certainly impressed by her grunge-chic style. The fashion house cast Moss in the Obsession fragrance campaign that courted major controversy in 1993.

38. Tyra Banks (1992)

The year 1992 saw a younger upstart give the supermodel Big Six a run for their money. Yes, Tyra Banks was only 19 years old when she stole the show on Yves Saint Laurent’s Haute Couture runway. Banks would, of course, later go on to find a whole new generation of style queens as the host of America’s Next Top Model.

37. Naomi Campbell (1991)

Not to be outdone by her fellow supermodels, Naomi Campbell pretty much dominated 1991 with her striking figure. Even the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson, requested her services for the promo to “In the Closet.” Campbell will no doubt want to forget that this was also around the same time she appeared in Vanilla Ice movie Cool As Ice.

36. Claudia Schiffer (1990)

Claudia Schiffer was hailed as one of the world’s 50 most beautiful people by People magazine in 1990. She appeared on the same list the following year, too. That’s little wonder considering the German native was blessed with the kind of blue eyes and blonde hair that had many drawing parallels with 1960s icon Brigitte Bardot.

35. Winona Ryder (1989)

There was no one who looked cooler than Winona Ryder in 1989. The actress established herself as a young Hollywood favorite thanks to her mesmerizing turn as a vengeful high school student in the comic cult classic Heathers. And she did so while sporting the year’s in-vogue hairstyle, feathered bangs.

34. Cindy Crawford (1988)

Cindy Crawford owns what must surely be one of the most famous beauty marks of all time. Her distinctive facial feature certainly helped set the star apart from the rest of her supermodel peers. That’s why in 1988 she appeared on the front cover of everything from Cosmopolitan magazine to Playboy!

33. Michelle Pfeiffer (1987)

In 1987 Michelle Pfeiffer struck box-office gold with The Witches of Eastwick... and basically never looked back. More hits, Oscar noms, and an Emmy win followed in the next 30 years — as well as a legion of devoted fans. Her beauty and grace are so legendary and long-lasting that Bruno Mars was even singing about her in 2014.

32. Elle Macpherson (1986)

Elle Macpherson was one of the first big names to emerge in the modern supermodel era. And with those flowing locks, that killer smile, and a pair of famously long legs, it’s little surprise she made such an impression. Macpherson truly hit the big time in 1986 when she graced Sports Illustrated magazine’s swimsuit edition front cover for the first of five occasions!

31. Madonna (1985)

We could have pretty much chosen any year from 1981 onward for the undisputed Queen of Pop, Madonna. But 1985 was perhaps the start of the Material Girl’s first imperial phase. Firstly, she reached number one with the single “Like a Virgin” and its eponymous album. Madonna also then appeared in Desperately Seeking Susan, launched her first major tour, and inspired every teenage girl to adopt her street-chic look.

30. Molly Ringwald (1984)

Of all her Brat Pack peers, with her striking red locks and pouting lips, Molly Ringwald was always going to command the most attention. The actress became an instant teen favorite in 1984 thanks to her turn in romantic comedy Pretty in Pink. And Ringwald would go on to showcase her very ’80s sense of style in another two John Hughes hits.

29. Jane Fonda (1983)

Jane Fonda was one of the most acclaimed actresses of the 1970s, winning two Oscars and picking up another two nominations. But in the following decade, she found herself more renowned for inspiring the nation to get fit. Yes, Fonda became something of a workout queen thanks to an eponymous VHS series that had everyone digging out their headbands and leotards.

28. Grace Jones (1982)

Style icons don’t come much more fearsome and fearless than Grace Jones. The singer/actress, who in 1982 released the album Living My Life, built a reputation for taking no prisoners. And she was always dressed immaculately, and often androgynously, while doing so. If it wasn’t for Jones, then there probably wouldn’t be a Lady Gaga.

27. Brooke Shields (1981)

Brooke Shields was still only in her mid-teens when she was courted by Calvin Klein to appear in one of its most provocative campaigns in 1980. That same year the striking model also became Vogue magazine’s youngest-ever cover star. And Shields also showed there was more to her than those bold brows when she landed the leading lady role in The Blue Lagoon. By the following year, she was a bona fide global star and pin-up.

26. Debbie Harry (1980)

Who better to usher in a new decade than the coolest frontwoman in rock? Debbie Harry’s bleached-blonde haircut, sultry makeup, and razor-sharp cheekbones had made her an instant icon. And her band Blondie had a glorious year in 1980 by scoring two chart-toppers, “Rapture” and “The Tide Is High,” from their seminal LP Autoamerican.

25. Christie Brinkley (1979)

Christie Brinkley’s future husband Billy Joel was so bowled over by her beauty that he ended up writing one of his biggest hits about it. The model also appeared in the video for that same tune, “Uptown Girl,” in 1983. But Brinkley’s big break actually came four years earlier when she graced the coveted swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated.

24. Olivia Newton-John (1978)

There could only be one woman to take the crown of 1978’s ultimate beauty icon. This was the year that Grease hit cinemas, after all. Yes, Olivia Newton-John managed to pull off both the wholesome girl-next-door and leather-jacketed rock-chick looks as leading lady Sandy in the classic musical.

23. Brigitte Bardot (1964)

Brigitte Bardot continued to prove that she was more than just a pretty face in 1964 when she appeared as Penny Lightfeather in The Ravishing Idiot. But the Frenchwoman will still always be best remembered for her natural beauty. Bardot had first caught attention as a teen on the front cover of magazine Elle. And she remained the ultimate pin-up throughout the Swinging Sixties, too.

22. Farrah Fawcett (1976)

Never mind Jennifer Aniston’s famous 1990s bouffant ’do. Farrah Fawcett was the first TV celebrity that had seemingly every American woman heading to the salon to get an exact replica. The actress became a superstar in 1976 not only due to her haircut but also her magnetic performance in the first season of Charlie’s Angels.

21. Pam Grier (1975)

Pam Grier had already built a reputation for herself on the blaxploitation scene by the time she bagged the leading role in Foxy Brown. But the 1974 movie sent her profile stratospheric and led to parts in Friday Foster and Sheba, Baby a year later. The actress grabbed just as much attention for her eyeliner flick and bold Afro as her gun-toting skills.

20. Beverly Johnson (1974)

Without Beverly Johnson, the likes of Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell would have found it much more difficult to become runway queens. In 1974 the model became the first-ever African-American to pose for the front cover of style bible Vogue. Several decades later The New York Times newspaper hailed Johnson as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century fashion.

19. Dolly Parton (1973)

In 1973 Dolly Parton released “Jolene,” the signature hit in which a woman pleads with another to stay away from her man. It seems fair to say that few country music fans had eyes for anyone else at the time. Yes, by this point Parton had cemented herself as a Nashville queen thanks to her infectious smile, blonde bouffant, and, of course, her curvy frame.

18. Liza Minnelli (1972)

Liza Minnelli practically owned the year 1972 thanks to her dazzling performance in Cabaret. The triple threat picked up a Best Actress Oscar for her turn as the all-singing, all-dancing Sally Bowles in the hit musical. And her quirky makeup, dark locks, and wide smile proved she was every inch as beautiful as her mother Judy Garland.

17. Anita Pallenberg (1971)

The Rolling Stones were particularly integral to the story of 1971’s premier style icon. Yes, Anita Pallenberg not only had three kids with their hellraising guitarist Keith Richards, she was once also in a relationship with their late founder Brian Jones. The model/actress became a cooler-than-cool fashion figure thanks to her natural look and kooky wardrobe.

16. Bianca Jagger (1970)

Bianca Jagger was a part of Andy Warhol’s close celebrity circle. But she only became a household name in 1970 when she began dating one of the world’s biggest rock stars, Mick Jagger. The pair married a year later but Bianca continued to party throughout the rest of the decade, and always with her familiar red lipstick and refined eye makeup.

15. Diana Ross (1969)

Diana Ross always stood out from the rest of The Supremes with her signature fake eyelashes, pink lip gloss, and liquid eyeliner. And she continued to make fashion statements when she left the Motown girl group in 1969. Even when she went au naturel, Ross’ immaculate skin, smoky eyes, and dramatic cheekbones ensured she was always going to command attention.

14. Raquel Welch (1968)

Raquel Welch had a busy 1968, appearing in The Biggest Bundle of Them All, Bandolero!, and Lady in Cement. She’d first established pin-up status two years earlier thanks to her fur-bikini-clad performance in One Million Years B.C. Welch’s decade-spanning career as a glamorpuss was celebrated in 2007 when cosmetics brand MAC crowned her a beauty icon.

13. Twiggy (1967)

Twiggy rose to fame after a fashion writer for British newspaper Daily Express spotted her picture on the wall of a salon. She would soon catch the attention of the American public, too. In 1967 Twiggy was chosen to appear on the front cover of Vogue magazine and her freckled, doe-eyed, and short-haired look became instantly iconic.

12. Mary Quant (1966)

Mary Quant defined British fashion in the Swinging Sixties as a designer but was more than stylish enough to pull off her own clothes, too. In 1966 the mullet-haired visionary rocked up to Buckingham Palace in a miniskirt to receive her OBE. That same year she also let fans in on the secret to her success with the memoir titled Quant by Quant.

11. Edie Sedgwick (1965)

Edie Sedgwick was hailed as the ultimate It Girl thanks to her social butterfly status and iconic sense of style. The latter was defined by her peroxide blonde hair, Bambi-esque eyelashes, and fur coat/short dress combos. In 1965 Sedgwick was taken under the wing of Pop Art genius Andy Warhol, who would later crown her the Queen of his New York workspace, The Factory.

10. Jacqueline Bisset (1977)

Jacqueline Bisset’s charcoal-lined eyes and chocolate-brown locks had already made her a style icon long before she filmed The Deep. But the 1977 disaster flick also saw her become the era’s ultimate pin-up. That was largely down to the wet T-shirt she sported while swimming underwater. Peter Guber, the movie’s producer, admitted that this scene made him a rich man. Yet Bisset claimed that she had no idea at the time that she would be filmed so provocatively.

9. Elizabeth Taylor (1963)

When it comes to Hollywood glamor there’s one name that usually towers above the rest. Elizabeth Taylor became an integral part of mid-20th century pop culture not only with her striking beauty and acting prowess but her turbulent love life, too. In 1963 she began dating her eventual husband number five — and essentially number six — Richard Burton after the pair shared the screen in the blockbuster Cleopatra.

8. Françoise Hardy (1962)

Françoise Hardy’s brown shoulder-length hair and bangs may have been on trend in 1962. But the ye-ye singer’s fashion sense was undoubtedly unconventional. Hardy much preferred to wear baggy clothing which hid her figure, and she rarely went out with makeup on. The French public seemed to appreciate this au naturel look and her debut single “Oh Oh Chéri” shifted more than 2 million copies!

7. Natalie Wood (1961)

Many consider Natalie Wood’s beauty to be unrivaled by any of her Hollywood peers. In 1961 the actress lit up the screen appearing alongside another screen icon, Warren Beatty, in the dramatic Splendor in the Grass. But her defining role came later that year when she played the leading lady in the hit musical West Side Story. Wood might have had the perfect look, but her character’s vocals were actually performed by Marni Nixon!

6. Jackie Kennedy (1960)

Renowned for her pillbox hats, Chanel suits, and bouffant hair, Jackie Kennedy was perhaps the first truly stylish First Lady. The American icon inspired a generation of women to embrace a sense of glamor after her husband John F. Kennedy was voted into the White House in 1960. Within three weeks of his presidential election win, the 35th POTUS and his wife had also welcomed son John into the world.

5. Doris Day (1959)

Doris Day represented the more wholesome side of Hollywood during its Golden Age. The actress perhaps best harnessed her girl-next-door sense of style in classic 1959 rom-com Pillow Talk. Day earned her first — and surprisingly only — Oscar nod in her glittering career for her performance alongside Rock Hudson.

4. Eartha Kitt (1958)

Forget Madonna. Eartha Kitt is considered by many to be the first true Material Girl. The actress certainly wasn’t afraid to draw upon her sultry persona during a career in which she became one of the first major African-American sex symbols. In 1958 Kitt enjoyed success on the big screen alongside Nat King Cole in St. Louis Blues, a biopic of W.C. Handy.

3. Sophia Loren (1957)

Sophia Loren had quite an eventful 1957. She appeared alongside Cary Grant in The Pride and the Passion, her first-ever Hollywood movie. The actress was also courted by both her co-star and Carlos Ponti, a film producer from her native Italy. Sophia ended up marrying the latter that same year. More than a half-century on and her signature ‘cat eye’ look is still very much in vogue.

2. Katharine Hepburn (1956)

Katharine Hepburn boasted the kind of cheekbones for which most models would kill. But otherwise, she was one of the more unconventional beauty icons. The actress had a frame that could be described as athletic. And Hepburn would complement it with shirts, trousers, and other clothing typically more associated with men. In 1956 she picked up a Best Actress Oscar nod for her turn in Summertime and delivered another nominated performance in The Rainmaker.

1. Lauren Bacall (1955)

Lauren Bacall famously had no interest in conforming to beauty norms. Unlike most of her Hollywood peers, she didn’t get her teeth straightened and her eyebrows always remained unplucked. Bacall would also insist on styling her own hair and applying her own make-up. This determination to do things her own way didn’t stop the actress — who would later embrace her love of theater in Broadway productions including Cactus Flower — from becoming a style icon. As well as having a beauty icon, every year has an iconic couple who captures everyone’s attention. Here’s who they were in the year you were born...

41. 1965: Cher and Sonny Bono

Sonny Bono and Cher are among the most fondly remembered power couples of the 1960s. This is partly because they released several hit romantic duets, including the hugely popular “I Got You Babe.” Though they wed in the late 1960s, they didn’t stay together and divorced during 1975. Their songs, on the other hand, have stood the test of time.

40. 1966: Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman

There’s a reason why people called Academy Award-winners Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman “Hollywood’s golden couple.” Their romance set a gold standard for celebrity pairings at a time when many of them were falling apart. The marriage endured for half a century until death did them part. Sadly, Newman passed away in 2008, though he left three children to continue the pair’s legacy.

39. 1967: Elvis and Priscilla Presley

Celebrities of the 1960s don’t come any bigger than Elvis “The King” Presley, so his marriage to Priscilla rocked the world. It was such a monumental event, in fact, that they spoke to the media as soon as the ceremony was complete. Neither Elvis nor Priscilla stayed faithful and their romance was shaky at best. They still had a strong connection, though, because they remained friends after their divorce five years later.

38. 1968: Johnny Cash and June Carter

Following Johnny’s onstage proposal to fellow country star June, the couple’s romance enamored the public. Fans and the media alike absorbed each detail of their musical collabs and Johnny’s famously emotional love letters. One of those messages even won a 2015 Valentine’s Day poll for “Greatest Love Letter of All Time” in the U.K.! Their marriage endured for more than three decades until Carter passed away in 2003. Johnny himself died within a few months of her passing.

37. 1969: John Lennon and Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono became a household name in 1969. That year she wed The Beatles’ John Lennon and participated in the couple’s “Bed-In for Peace” protest. Their romance also made Yoko perhaps unfairly synonymous with the breakup of John’s band in 1970. But you have to concede that it would’ve taken a solid relationship to derail The Beatles’ fame train.

36. 1970: Paul and Linda McCartney

Despite John and Yoko’s wedding overshadowing Paul and Linda’s in 1969, the McCartneys soon gained popularity. Paul even adopted Linda’s child from an earlier relationship as well as having three biological kids with her. They remained together for almost three decades until cancer took Linda’s life in 1998.

35. 1971: Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland

Jane and Donald’s chemistry was palpable in the film Klute and, as it turned out, for good reason. They were apparently dating during the shoot... While Jane was still married to Roger Vadim. It proved to be a whirlwind romance, though, and moving in with each other was the catalyst for their split. Donald told The Guardian in 2008, “It was a wonderful relationship right up to the point we lived together.”

34. 1972: James Taylor and Carly Simon

It was only natural that a marriage between two of the 1970s’ most successful pop singers would garner plenty of attention. But Carly told People in 2015 that she’d actually fallen for James much earlier. After seeing him on the front of TIME, Carly told her sister, “I’m gonna marry that man.” And she did, albeit only for ten years, after which the couple divorced.

33. 1973: Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw

It looked like Ali’s marriage to Steve was a love story of her very own, but unfortunately she had to get away. In 2018 she told People, “There were many times that were just wonderful. And there were many times that were just ghastly.” Their relationship ended in divorce in 1977, though Ali admitted that she still wished they’d “both grown old sober” together.

32. 1974: Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston

After Hollywood legend Jack first encountered Anjelica in 1973, it kick-started an on-again, off-again romance that spanned almost two decades. The relationship would end abruptly, though, when Jack revealed he’d gotten another woman pregnant. Even so, they remained on friendly terms and in 2014 Anjelica whimsically told the New York Post that theirs had been a “hopeless, enduring love.”

31. 1975: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

Elizabeth and Richard started their relationship with a controversial affair back in the early 1960s. It’s a testament to their enduring popularity that people were still raking it over a decade later. That’s partially because they married each other twice. They initially had a decade-long marriage starting in 1964 and then wed again briefly in 1975. You have to hand it to them, they were persistent!

30. 1976: Farrah Fawcett and Lee Majors

Do you recall that celebrity couple jogging alongside each other on the front of People magazine? Well, that was Farrah and Lee, and they were so famous that it contributed to the breakup of their marriage more than decade later. In 2019 Lee told People that “there was a year or so when I think I saw [Farrah] two weeks in one year. It’s very difficult with careers like that.”

29. 1977: Burt Reynolds and Sally Field

Burt and Sally started dating while they were shooting Smokey and the Bandit and stayed together for half a decade. And if it’d been up to Burt, it would’ve been longer. During a 2018 Today interview he called Sally the love of his life. She, on the other hand, told The New York Times that their relationship was “not without loving and caring, but really complicated and hurtful to me.”

28. 1978: Diane Keaton and Warren Beatty

By her own admission Diane didn’t date much, which makes her relationship with Warren even more striking. The pair had strong chemistry; in a 2016 interview with Variety she described him as “sexy,” “mysterious” and “extremely gifted.” Diane was after marriage, though, whereas Warren wasn’t, which contributed to the end of their short but sweet romance.

27. 1979: Pattie Boyd and Eric Clapton

Pattie had two legendary musicians fighting over her: her then husband and The Beatles guitarist George Harrison and Eric. Pattie infatuated both men, and allegedly inspired at least three classic songs: Eric’s “Wonderful Tonight” and “Layla,” and George’s “Something.” An inebriated Eric even challenged George to a guitar contest over his muse and won. But though he and Patty later wed, they split up a decade later.

26. 1980: Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon

The late Carrie Fisher, AKA Princess Leia, was many a man’s dream girl during the 1980s, yet for Paul it was a reality. The relationship wasn’t all out-of-this world, though. They wed in 1983 but the romance just wasn’t written in the stars. After only a year of marriage they divorced and went back to dating instead, which also ended a decade later.

25. 1981: Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach

Beatles fans had likely been in a dark place after the tragic assassination of John Lennon at the end of 1980. So it was perhaps with some relief that devotees had a reason to celebrate in April 1981, when Ringo Starr wed Barbara Bach. The former Beatle and the former Bond girl are still married today, too.

24. 1982: Brooke Shields and Michael Jackson

Any big event in Michael Jackson’s life hit the news and his relationship with Brooke was no different. Michael told NBC News in 2009 that she was “one of the loves of his life,” and he reportedly proposed to her. Brooke later compared their love to “two little kids having fun” and while their romance didn’t go the distance, they remained friends.

23. 1983: Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell

Though they have one of showbiz’s most enduring romances, Goldie and Kurt shirk convention and have never married. In fact, Goldie revealed to E! News in 2018 that this is precisely why they’ve lasted so long. “There’s something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other,” she explained. “So for me, I chose to stay, and Kurt chose to stay.”

22. 1984: Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr.

Pre-Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. dated Sarah Jessica Parker. However, RDJ was a very different man back then and his addictions made their seven years together tough. Sarah revealed to People magazine in 2018 that his substance problems had been the reason for their split. RDJ has remained grateful for the support Sarah gave him, though. “She provided me a home and understanding,” he told Parade in 2008.

21. 1985: Brigitte Nielsen and Sylvester Stallone

As a 1980s megastar Sylvester presumably got a lot of female attention. But the “provocative” photo Brigitte allegedly sent him appears to have made quite an impression on the actor. The pair each broke off their current marriages to pursue each other, though their own marriage lasted just a couple of years. And throughout that time, there was talk of affairs on both sides. You could say the romance was rocky!

20. Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger

Action star Arnold’s marriage lasted for a quarter of a century and he fathered four children with Maria. But she terminated their relationship when she found out that Arnold had had a son called Joseph with their housemaid. He admitted to Fox News in 2017 that it was a “major, major” mistake, though he reportedly has good relations with Joseph.

19. 1987: Demi Moore and Bruce Willis

Demi and Bruce had a Vegas wedding within a year of meeting, yet their romance lasted for more than a decade, during which time they had three children. And while they split for good in 2000, Demi and Bruce’s bond didn’t die hard – they co-parented together and stayed on good terms.

18. 1988: Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks

Tom and Rita first encountered each other while filming Volunteers and wed after a three-year relationship. It turns out their romance is just as wholesome as Tom’s image as “America’s Dad.” While many Hollywood relationships failed, his and Rita’s endured – a fact he’s touchingly grateful for. “I still can’t believe my wife goes out with me,” he gushed to People in 2015.

17. 1989: Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon

Kevin and Kyra are another example of how love can endure even in the high-pressure world of Hollywood. They were introduced on the set of Lemon Sky, wed after it hit the big screen in 1988 and have two children together. In fact, 2018 marked their 30th anniversary, and their marriage is still going strong today.

16. 1990: Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise

When Nicole auditioned for Days of Thunder and met Tom, there were instant fireworks. In a 2016 interview with People she described how her “jaw dropped.” Tom must have felt the same, since the then king and queen of Hollywood had a headline-grabbing wedding a little over a year later. Keeping the relationship together proved mission impossible, though, and it ended in 2001 – but Nicole still remembers their time together fondly.

15. 1991: Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan

When rom-com veterans Meg and Dennis met, they started a love story of their own. The pair even had a romantic Valentine’s Day wedding! Things didn’t end like their movies, though, and eventually the relationship imploded. The media cited Meg’s alleged affair with Russell Crowe as the reason, but the actress told ABC News differently in 2006. “My marriage was broken, nobody else broke it up,” she said.

14. 1992: David Bowie and Iman

David Bowie first encountered his model wife Iman on a blind date, and it turned into modern love. During a 2000 interview with Hello magazine Bowie revealed, “I’d never gone after anything in my life with such passion. I just knew she was the one.” They spent more than two decades together before cancer tragically claimed Bowie’s life in 2016.

13. 1993: Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin

Alec and Kim met while shooting the aptly named movie The Marrying Man. Three years later the stars’ relationship hit the headlines when they got hitched, but it didn’t last. Their divorce nine years later was just as widely reported, and for all the wrong reasons. In 2016, Kim described the process to Cosmopolitan as “very public and nasty.”

12. 1994: Kate Moss and Johnny Depp

When model Kate spoke to People about Johnny in 2016, she said, “I knew from the first moment we talked that we were going to be together.” The charismatic pair jetted around the world for almost half a decade, turning heads wherever they went. Until, that is, their fiery passion turned into heated arguments and their relationship burnt out completely.

11. 1995: Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt

Two beautiful celebrities leading a Hollywood lifestyle together; surely Gwyneth and Brad were made for each other? A lot of people thought so when this glamorous pair got engaged. They couldn’t go the distance, though. In 2015 Gwyneth recounted that she’d loved Brad, but she’d been too young and he’d been “too good” for her.

10. 1996: Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

Fellow musicians Gwen and Gavin tied the knot in spectacular style. Gwen in particular made jaws drop with her unforgettable gradient-style white and pink trained wedding gown. Their relationship continued to make news over its 13-year run due to several controversies, which ultimately ended in a 2015 divorce. Perhaps she just wanted a simple kind of life!

9. 1997: Victoria and David Beckham

Few couples are as famous as former Spice Girl Victoria and soccer player David. They became engaged just a year into their relationship and have since become celebrity royalty. The modest Victoria even donned a tiara on her wedding day! Four kids and almost two decades later, the world’s “it” couple are still together.

8. 1998: Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith

If you’re talking sturdy showbiz relationships, look no further than Jada and Will. In addition to going the distance even after 20-plus years, their union has created a new generation of celebrities. Their daughter Willow and son Willow are becoming just as famous as their parents.

7. 1999: Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe

For Reese’s 21st birthday she got more than she expected when she encountered Ryan and sparks flew. They famously wed shortly after their movie Cruel Intentions came out and went on to have a couple of kids. Though their relationship eventually led to divorce in 2007, Reese and Ryan remain on amicable terms.

6. 2000: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston

Brad’s had some high-profile romances in his day, but his relationship with Jennifer may perhaps be the most famous of them all. Their ostentatious wedding in 2000 had the media wowing at proceedings (the fireworks display in particular) and remained the talk of Hollywood for long after. Brad famously ditched Jennifer for Angelina Jolie, though, which left many Brennifer fans in mourning.

5. 2001: Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake

How can you forget a couple who are famous (or infamous) for their matching denim outfits? It’s a fashion faux pas now, but back in 2001 the pop power couple Britney and Justin were celeb chic. Their split a year later also produced two memorable tracks: Britney’s “Everytime” and Justin’s “Cry Me a River.”

4. 2002: Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck

If you’ve ever wondered where those couple portmanteau names come from, you’ve found the answer. Jennifer and Ben ‒ or Bennifer ‒ were so popular that their relationship pretty much created the trend singlehandedly. But the super couple were perhaps too high-profile for their own good.
