Brazilian fishermen have been caught on camera illegally killing dolphins and then laughing about it, according to Brazil’s environmental protection agency.
The video showed the fishermen, who are not clearly identified, netting 83 river dolphins, which then suffocated, and hauling them up on deck. It is thought that the illegal haul was then sold on to other fishing boats as bate.
Brazil has a strong record protecting its marine life and it is taking the incident seriously. The video has been passed on to the police for investigation whilst the Environmental Protection Agency has announced plans to prevent fishing in coastal waters where dolphins are known to be.
