No One Wanted This “Saddest Cat.” But How He Transformed In The Hour After Being Adopted Is Stunning

After being chewed up and spat out by life as a stray, one cat was living out his final days in a shelter before his scheduled euthanasia. Indeed, as he was suffering from a crushed spine, not to mention deformities that gave him a permanently miserable expression, the cat seemed out of hope. And yet, after finding a forever home, he is finally discovering the transformative power of love.

BenBen the cat had earned the moniker of being the internet’s saddest cat. And, looking at images of the melancholy moggie, it’s not hard to see why. But though he appears to have had quite the traumatic start to life, there’s a lot more to his unhappy expression.

Unfortunately, however, not much is known about BenBen’s life before he wound up at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in British Columbia, Canada. Still, given that he had a whole host of injuries on his face and body, it was clear that the creature had been through something terrible.

The little cat had suffered a number of lacerations, was sporting a cauliflower ear and had a crushed spine. Indeed, staff at the SPCA believed that he may have been attacked by a larger animal, although there was no way of telling for sure.

Furthermore, staff at the shelter also explained that the little kitty had excess skin which was dragging his face down and making him appear – well – sad. The poor stray looked for all the world like he had abandoned all hope. And then he acted like he had as well: he stopped eating or drinking and even refused to move.

Then came the final nail in his premature coffin. A vet declared that it was unlikely that the cat would ever walk again and that he would need pain medication for the rest of his days. Hence, the cat was marked as “unadoptable” and was, heartbreakingly, scheduled to be euthanized.

But a loving couple thought differently. Yes, a woman had heard about BenBen’s tragic predicament through her work at an ER veterinarian clinic. Without even needing to meet the cat, then, she and her partner knew that they were his only chance.

To rescue the cat, though, the pair had to act fast – and, thankfully, they did. “We managed to get everything sorted out the day before his scheduled euthanization and brought him to his forever home,” they said to cat news website Love Meow.

The generous couple were in fact already animal lovers – and at home, BenBen would have other felines to call siblings. But for now, to allow him to settle in, the couple put their new addition in the bathroom while he got to grips with his new surroundings.

However, it didn’t take long for BenBen to open up to his new family. In fact, it seemed as if he couldn’t wait to show them his gratitude. “We sat down with him for about an hour and he was instantly full of purrs, smiles and ‘thank you’ cuddles,” his owners revealed.

Images posted to BenBen’s dedicated social media pages, meanwhile, show the cat snuggling himself up to a furry pillow, looking well and truly at home. “I like to think he knew he was safe and had his forever home at that moment,” one of his owners added. “It only took about an hour for him to start getting curious about his surroundings.”

As the days progressed, moreover, BenBen finally learned how to be a cat again. Indeed, he was pictured playing with his owner’s slippers and snoozing in a variety of comfy spots. And, apparently, the little kitty who had previously given up eating also rediscovered his love of food.

Even more impressive was the fact that BenBen beat all the odds against him. “Even though the vets said he would never walk again, he was determined to prove them wrong,” his owners explained. It turned out that all the creature really needed was some TLC.

With this said, however, BenBen still faced a few difficulties due to his injuries. But they just made him all the more endearing to his loving new owners. “When he tries to turn around and look at you, he has to turn his whole body. He has perma-sad, but beautiful green eyes,” they said.

“When he climbs stairs, he has this weird bunny hop he uses to get up. And his walk looks like he almost can’t bend the knees and elbows,” one of his humans added. “And his personality is so unique. I can’t really describe him.”

In fact, the couple found BenBen’s antics far too cute to keep to themselves. So, they set up a Facebook and Instagram page using his full name, Benjamin Button. Both pages document the daily exploits of the now happy cat, and they’ve proved popular online.

What’s more, the cat who once was deemed as “unadoptable” due to his despondent demeanor has since won over legions of fans. In fact, he now boasts over 14,000 followers on Instagram and 8,000 on Facebook. It seems, then, that people can’t get enough of BenBen’s adorable updates.

Indeed, many of his followers gush over BenBen and his family. “What a wonderful story,” wrote one. “Thank you for your love and care of this sweet kitty. This is what the world needs! Again, a million thanks for giving Ben a new life! He is beautiful.”

Now, nine months after his rescue, BenBen is still coming on leaps and bounds. “He’s doing so well! No one who knew him before can believe he’s turned out so awesome,” his owners said to Love Meow. “We’re so proud of this little monster.”
