Rescuers Got A Call About A Badly Abused Pit Bull. But What They Saw In The Dark Came As A Shock

In the summer of 2013 a group of animal rescuers attended a scene in California. But as they arrived at the entrance of an unlit and abandoned alley, it was hard to see anything at all. As they looked closer, however, they noticed that somewhere in the darkness something was trembling in fear.

The Hope For Paws animal rescue organization were the ones on the ground that day. In 2008 Eldad and Audrey Hagar established the charity, which is based in Los Angeles. Its purpose? To rescue abused and neglected animals before finding them loving forever homes.

Lisa Chiarelli made the call to Hope For Paws that day in 2013. Chiarelli actually works alongside the organization to raise awareness about animal abuse. In fact, it was friends of hers who alerted her to the situation, knowing that she would know what to do next.

Presumably concerned for its welfare, Chiarelli’s friends tailed the canine until it suddenly collapsed. The good samaritans then sat with the pup until help could arrive. So when the team from Hope For Paws got to the scene, they found the pup cowering down the dark alley.

After a few moments of winning the dog’s trust and allowing her to sniff him out, Hope For Paws founder Eldad Hagar managed to get the frightened pooch onto a lead. “I was relieved the dog accepted my touch,” Hagar said in a video of the rescue.

“You’re so cute, you’re so nice,” Hagar reassured the dog as she got used to the rescuers’ company. However, it was only as they led her out of the darkness that the team gaged the true extent of the dog’s injuries. “She has scars all over: head, neck, legs, [and] her face is swollen,” Hagar said.

Then, they led the dog to a nearby car and whisked her off to an animal hospital. Once there, though, the team suspected that the pit bull may have been used as a bait dog. This meant that the canine may have been used illegally as a fighting dog for the purposes of gambling or entertainment.

So, the vet X-rayed the petrified pup, gave her pain medication and put her on a course of antibiotics to treat her injuries. And, after discovering that the dog was female, the Hope For Paws team decided to name her Cadence.

Now although her injuries looked painful, just 24 hours later Cadence was already starting to recover. And, for what was likely to be the first time in her life, the dog got to experience friendly and loving hands. Yes, Hagar and his team worked hard to comfort the pit bull, who happily responded with kisses.

Then, something incredible happened. Cadence met another rescued pit bull, named Chance, and it seemed to be love at first sight. In fact, Hope For Paws rescued Chance shortly after Cadence. On the scene, he was so scared that he was found hiding under a truck.

But at Paws, Chance found a friend and, in an amazing show of animal empathy, licked Cadence’s facial wounds. Indeed, Chance’s show of tenderness did much to ease Cadence’s nerves. And, in fact, the pair quickly established a loving bond that helped them both through their hours of need.

A few days after her rescue, the Hope For Paws team took Cadence into surgery to have an operation on her eyes. Thankfully, the procedure was a success and marked the end of Cadence’s treatment at the hospital. “All her medical issues are now resolved. No more wounds, no more stitches, no more medications. Just one happy healthy amazing dog who is now looking for a home,” a happy Hagar announced on Facebook.

In fact, five days after her surgery, Hagar shared an image of the dog in recovery. In the caption he gushed, “Cadence is such a sport… She has the most amazing spirit – just look at her tail going already.” Somehow, despite her suffering, Cadence had turned into a happy, bouncy dog.

So, now that Cadence was feeling better, Lisa Chiarelli took her home and acted as a foster mom until a permanent home could be found. And it was there that the dog found fun in life once more. In fact, she spent her days swimming in the pool and playing ball.

Furthermore, Hope For Paws was certain that the rescued pup would make the perfect family pet. “Cadence loves dogs,” the organization explained, “and is very gentle with children.” So, in a bid to spread the word about Cadence’s rescue, Hope For Paws shared a video documenting her discovery and subsequent recovery.

The heartwarming clip has since been watched over nine million times. “That unconditional love that they have is just amazing. Dogs are truly little angels here on Earth, in my opinion,” read one of the thousands of comments on YouTube.

And, with all the attention surrounding her rescue, it wasn’t long before Cadence was adopted. Yes, on October 30, 2013, the lucky dog moved into her new home in the Hollywood Hills. Finally, then, Cadence was given the opportunity to be the loving, happy dog she’d always had the potential to be.

“We were the lucky people that got to adopt her and now she has an incredible new life with us in Southern California,” her new family wrote on a specially created Facebook page for Cadence. Luckily, Cadence blossomed with each day.

“She is one of the best things that has ever happened to us, and we couldn’t be more grateful to Eldad, Lisa and all of the people that have supported and donated to Hope for Paws,” the family added. Thanks to the organization, such rescues help animals and families find love.

And there was also good news for Cadence’s buddy Chance, who was adopted by a family in Arizona. So, although they don’t get to see each other much anymore, both dogs are happier than ever. Their amazing stories just go to show that every dog really does have its day.
