It is the scandal that has rocked the world. No, it’s not a politician caught with a mistress but a different story: Ken has dumped his longtime love, Barbie! For good reason too, as the fancy packaging in which she wraps herself is destroying the homes of some of the last Sumatran tigers, Orangutans and other endangered species unique to Indonesia.
How is she doing this? Well, Mattel is using packaging that comes from the Indonesian rainforest fiber, MTH or mixed hardwood tropical, identifiable through forensics. Greenpeace has traced it back to Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), among the biggest destroyers of rainforests in Indonesia. APP are so notorious that Staples, the office supplier, stopped using them in 2008 because of their destructive habits. And yet Barbie is happily wrapping herself in the same packaging that is killing tigers by eliminating their homes.
Forensic examination proved that 50% of Barbie’s packaging came from MTH. Chain-of-custody evidence shows that APP is a major supplier for packaging to toy brands, including Mattel, and they clear the Indonesian rainforests to get the pulp. This is an outrage to Ken! He was horrified when he learned about Barbie’s scandal as you can see in the interview with him.
Greenpeace activists dressed in the style of Ken have already scaled the walls of Mattel’s Los Angeles headquarters, where they put up a giant banner which you can see above.
You can get involved, too, by telling Mattel and Barbie to stop the destruction and save the rainforest for the species and people who live there. You can get all the information on how here, with links to the relevant CEO in your country. Little girls (and boys) don’t want to be a part of this! Of course, the destruction of the rainforest also increases global warming, so Barbie is doubly responsible. She needs to get into rehab, and quickly!
