A Rare Glimpse Inside Chris Hemsworth’s Spectacular Australian Mansion

Chris Hemsworth has become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the last few years. But while the actor continues to work his magic — and his muscles — on the big screen, it’s easy to forget that California isn’t his home anymore. Hemsworth and his family are now back in his native Australia. They live in a spectacular mansion, and we’re about to get a glimpse of it!

A rare look

Excited? We don’t blame you. Hemsworth is a fairly private guy away from the cameras, so this is a rare chance to see his home up close. The Hollywood star certainly didn’t have to worry about the financial costs of making the switch from California to Australia, since he boasts an eye-watering fortune.

Building a fortune

By 2012, a decade after setting off on his acting journey, Hemsworth was said to have around $12 million in the bank. The Australian made his Hollywood breakthrough in 2009’s Star Trek, knocking his brief role out of the park. But everything changed in 2011 when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor. From there, his career sky-rocketed into the stratosphere.

Busy times

Since his first appearance as the Marvel superhero, Hemsworth has gone on to reprise the role a further eight times on the big screen. Woah. That’s some run, right? Plus, he’s starred in a range of other movies during that spell as well. You can’t say the guy hasn’t been busy! So, going into 2021 his fortune had grown significantly.

Hemsworth’s family

According to TheRichest, Hemsworth was sitting on $130 million at that point. Holy smokes. His hard work had definitely paid off — and then some! As for his private life, the superstar has built a loving family alongside his partner Elsa Pataky. They’re the proud parents of three young children named Tristan, India, and Sasha. But what pushed them to leave California?

“Suffocated”

Well, Hemsworth provided a couple of interesting explanations in different interviews. Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph in 2020, he highlighted one of the drawbacks of Hollywood fame. The Marvel star said, “When you’re suffocated by the work, every conversation that you’re having and every billboard you’re seeing is to do with a movie or whatever around the industry. You lose perspective.”

“No longer all about me”

Hemsworth raised a similar point in an earlier chat with Modern Luxury in 2016, before focusing on his children. He noted, “I love what I do as an actor, but when you’re surrounded by it constantly, it becomes a bit suffocating. [But] it’s no longer all about me, which is quite refreshing. Acting is the most self-absorbed world, where you’re thinking about your feelings.”

Shifting mindset

“You’re constantly having to self-analyze or analyze a character you’re playing,” Hemsworth continued. “It’s just a horrible, noisy conversation. Once the kids arrived, I was like, ‘Wow, this is what life is about.’” Fascinating insight, wouldn’t you agree? Not all actors are so open about their work. Anyway, the Thor star didn’t stop there, either, as we’re about to discover.

“A tough place”

Yep, when reflecting on his family’s time in California, Hemsworth had this to say to Modern Luxury. The actor revealed, “L.A. is a tough place to get around with kids. There’s not a whole lot of foot traffic. It was all about loading up the car and car seats. We were living shoulder to shoulder in the suburbs and thought that’s not how we want our kids to grow up.”

Moving to Byron Bay...

So, with that in mind, Hemsworth eyed up a place in Byron Bay, Australia. It was in an incredible spot, hidden amongst the trees leading to the shoreline. In the end, he and Pataky paid roughly $9 million to get their hands on it in 2016. Job done, right? Well, not quite. As it turned out, the couple had grand plans for their new home.

A massive job

And to fully realize that vision, Hemsworth and Pataky needed to renovate the house from the ground up. It was a huge task, to say the least! So they obviously couldn’t move in while all that work was being done to the place. Where would the family stay in the meantime? Simple — the Hollywood star just bought another property in the area.

The beachside mansion

Yes, Hemsworth and Pataky splashed $4.3 million on a different mansion by the beach. And it was gorgeous. The place boasted a Balinese aesthetic and had “private access” to the nearby shorefront, according to TheRichest. This house by itself looked like it could’ve been perfect for the family to settle down in. But of course, they had bigger fish to fry.

Renovation costs

So that brings us back to the huge project taking place down the road. The building work kicked off in 2017, and by the time it was finished it had cost Hemsworth around $18 million. Yes folks, that’s on top of the money he and Pataky had already paid to buy the property. Wow! They really spared no expense here.

Making the switch

Once the renovation was finally complete, Hemsworth and company said goodbye to the beachside mansion that temporarily housed them. It was suggested that the actor handed it over to his mom and dad at that stage, but TheRichest reported that it got put on the market. A buyer was eventually found, meaning the beautiful property wouldn’t sit empty for long.

Stunning transformation

Anyway, let’s switch our focus to the bigger Byron Bay mansion. Following all that work, Hemsworth and Pataky’s hopes for the property had now become a reality. It had been completely transformed. Tony Stark wouldn’t have looked out of place here, let alone Thor! On that note, it’s about time we took a peek inside, wouldn’t you agree? Awesome. Here we go...

On to the tour...

As soon as you enter the mansion, one thing immediately jumps out. The wall next to the front doors has a huge mural sprawled across it. The spectacular piece is made up of black, blue, and white wavy lines. You can’t take your eyes off it. The man behind the painting named it Darrundang Gaagal — the English translation is “Thanking the Ocean.”

“Needed some love”

Hemsworth provided a bit more background on the piece in a lengthy Instagram post in July 2019. He wrote, “I had a big empty wall that needed some love. And I was beyond thankful to have one of my favorite artists, Otis Hope Carey, help out!” Then, in great detail, the Hollywood star broke down the painting’s meaning. There was nothing random about its design.

The mural’s meaning

“Otis Hope Carey painted this mural which focuses on representational imagery of the ceremonial dancing of the Gumbaynggirr people, weaved together with traditional forms in thanks to their totemic spiritual emblem ‘GAAGAL’ (Ocean),” Hemsworth explained in the social media post. “Long shifting black lines ripple across the wall, demonstrating the power and energy emanating from dancing feet stomping into the ground.”

The cost?

Hemsworth added, “Blue circular line work is painted over the top throughout the composition in reference to the ocean, in an act of thanks for its healing powers and all that’s received from it. In this piece, Otis utilizes traditional symbols and imagery in grandiose scale in a display of contemporary practice and thought.” In total, it was rumored that the actor paid at least $100,000 for the mural.

Lots of bathrooms

Let’s peel ourselves away to explore the rest of the mansion now. As you go deeper into the property, the scale of it really starts to dawn on you. For instance, there are ten bathrooms scattered around Hemsworth’s home. Holy cow! That’s a lot of spares, right? But the family could alternate between them every so often if they wanted.

The bedrooms

Meanwhile, the mansion houses six bedrooms as well. Tristan, India, and Sasha have their own spaces, with Hemsworth and Pataky taking the main suite. The other two rooms are free to be used as and when. Something tells us that overnight visitors won’t have to crash on the living room sofa. Elsewhere, you’ll find a sauna, a massage room, and a steam room, too.

More rooms...

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, Hemsworth’s home also has a media room, a games room, and a butler’s pantry. A map might be helpful for first-time explorers here! As for standout features inside the mansion, the built-in fireplace has to be near the top. We can only imagine how cozy it gets in that space during the winter months.

The gym

Plus, there’s a gym on the property as well. After all, Hemsworth needs a spot to get himself ready for those appearances as Thor on the big screen. From cardio stuff to weights, this room covers every base for the Marvel star. Guess what, though? We’ve still got more to look at here. The Byron Bay mansion really is a feast for the eyes.

The crown jewel?

So let’s head up to the roof. Incredibly, Hemsworth and Pataky asked for an “infinity pool” to be built at the top of their home during the renovation. It stretches over 164 feet near the edge of the property’s right-hand side. And let’s be honest here, folks — it’s a jaw-dropping feature. You could easily argue that it’s the mansion’s crown jewel.

An expensive addition

Overall, it’s said that that part of the renovation project set Hemsworth and Pataky back by more than $400,000, according to TheRichest. Mind you, looking at the results, it appeared to be worth every cent. There’s also an added bonus that we haven’t touched upon yet. And it might’ve actually been the driving factor for getting the pool built.

Unmatched views

Yes, from the roof of the mansion, you’re treated to some truly amazing views of the surrounding area. Specifically, Hemsworth and his family are able to gaze upon the Broken Head Nature Reserve while chilling in the pool. The shoreline isn’t anything to be sniffed at, either. Sounds dreamy, right? We’d be spending every available moment up there if we could!

Pricey landscaping

Anyway, back down on the ground, there’s one last thing to look at — the landscaping. Nope, Hemsworth and Pataky didn’t neglect the area outside the mansion during the build. In total, TheRichest claimed that they paid in the region of half a million dollars to spruce it up. Woah. Something tells us that garden-lovers everywhere would jump at the chance to examine the results.

More to come?

So that about does it, folks. Our tour of the mansion has come to an end. Quite the experience, wouldn’t you say? After all, it’s not every day that you get to take a peek at a $30 million property! We wonder if Hemsworth has any other projects planned in the future? He hasn’t been afraid to buy different houses in the past.

Previous properties

You see, Hemsworth and his two brothers Luke and Liam were known for picking up beachside properties in America. To give you an example, they paid nearly $5 million for a mansion in Malibu, California, in 2013, before selling it for a profit some time later. Then, the famous trio did the same thing again with another house in the area.

Looking ahead

On that note, it’s fair to say that Hemsworth has a lot on his plate outside acting! But that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing more of him on the big screen. Extraction 2, Furiosa and a Hulk Hogan biopic on the back burner are all keeping the action star busy. So, that $130 million fortune is only going to get bigger.
