After Over 3 Decades Together, Goldie Hawn And Kurt Russell Had Some Astonishing News

Few Hollywood relationships have been as successful as the one shared by Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. At 34 years together, the pair have beaten the odds to become one of Tinseltown’s longest-surviving couples. But after nearly three and a half decades in the spotlight as a couple, the duo is still capable of surprises. And a recent announcement has left many fans dumbstruck.

First meeting

Having spent half their lives in partnership, it’s safe to say that Hawn and Russell know each other pretty well. But the pair have actually been acquainted for far longer than many fans realize. In fact, the actors first met almost 50 years ago on the set of 1968’s The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band.

Age gap

However, based on this first meeting, things weren’t destined to be. While the two undeniably hit it off, the small subject of the age gap ultimately stopped things from developing. “I was 21, and he was 16,” Hawn told the BBC’s Desert Island Discs in 2012. “I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young.”

Oscar winner

So after their first, fateful encounter, Hawn and Russell went their own separate and successful ways. Just two years later, for example, Hawn won an Oscar for her performance in 1969’s Cactus Flower. This in turn led to her becoming one of Hollywood’s best-loved comedic performers, and she earned herself another Oscar nom in 1980, this time for Private Benjamin.

Leading man

Meanwhile, Russell was busy shedding off his reputation as a child star. After featuring as the King himself in 1979’s Elvis, the actor teamed with director John Carpenter for 1981’s Escape from New York. And having now established himself as a screen tough guy, Russell further flexed his muscles in Carpenter’s The Thing.

Previous marriages

At the same time, besides diverging in their professional lives, Hawn and Russell were also growing apart personally. Following a marriage to Gus Trikonis, Hawn wed musician Bill Hudson, with whom she had future actors Kate and Oliver. Russell, on the other hand, married his Elvis co-star Season Hubley in 1979 – a union that yielded one son, Boston.

Fate intervenes

Nevertheless, the future couple’s early romances didn’t end rosily. After four years together, Hawn separated from Hudson in 1980; and Russell and Hubley called time on their union in 1983, four years after taking their vows. But heartbreak would soon turn into happiness, as the two found themselves pulled closer together.

A chance audition

While auditioning for Swing Shift in 1983, the two stars met once again. Bowled over by how much Hawn had changed, Russell tried to start a conversation. But unfortunately, he was too hungover to form a charming sentence. Instead, as Russell sheepishly revealed in a 2017 appearance on Conan, he blurted out, “Man, you’ve got a great figure.”

Bumps in the road

Surprisingly, Russell’s cheesy line worked, and the pair eventually found themselves on their first date at a swing music club. That night ended in a visit from the cops, though, as Russell had to help Hawn break into her own home. And while it was undoubtedly a date to remember for that reason, little did the pair know that it would spawn one of Hollywood’s longest-running relationships.

Proud parents

Within three years, in fact, the couple welcomed their son Wyatt, who is now a Hollywood star in his own right, into the world. In addition, Hawn and Russell would both become stepparents to each other’s previous children. To this day, in fact, Hawn’s daughter Kate Hudson still looks to Russell as her true father figure.

Onscreen chemistry

On top of making a great couple in real life, Hawn and Russell also played together well on screen. In 1987, for instance, the duo appeared in the comedy film Overboard, which raked in almost $27 million at the U.S. box office. And during a 2017 appearance on Today, Russell also admitted that the two could one day “work together again.”

Not actually married

But although they’ve been together for almost 35 years, Hawn and Russell have, unusually, never tied the knot. “What is marriage going to do for us?” Hawn quizzed the hosts of British show Loose Women in 2016. “Our children said years ago they don’t want us to get married.” Ultimately, though, the pair would receive an honor binding them closer than any wedding ceremony.

Walk of Fame

On May 4, 2017, Hawn and Russell walked the red carpet down Hollywood Boulevard for a very special event. Like many stars before them, the two were being awarded a space on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. However, they were to receive their tiles side by side, in an almost unheard-of joint celebration.

Big-name guests

As with the best weddings, Hawn and Russell had plenty of guests to bless the occasion. Among them were Reese Witherspoon, Hawn’s self-described “biggest fan,” and Quentin Tarantino, who directed Russell in Death Proof and The Hateful Eight. But it was Kate Hudson who had the most emotional speech to give.

Kate's tribute

“I always thought I’d be talking about them at like a wedding or something,” the Almost Famous star joked. “But since a wedding doesn’t seem to be in our near future, ever, this may be my only opportunity.” She added that, despite her parents’ fame, “they’ve managed to maintain a sense of normalcy and closeness with every one of their children.”

A celebration like no other

Hawn herself mirrored her daughter’s observations when she too came to the stage. “Did we just get married?” she joked to the ceremony’s audience. “We’ve never had a celebration like this before, but I’m not going to pop the question.”

Back to the silver screen

The ceremony was doubly significant for Hawn, too, as Snatched, her first film part in 15 years, was set for release the following week. And the star made sure to remind fans of her humble roots. “[My parents] wouldn’t believe that this little girl that wanted a regular life didn’t quite get that, but I got a hell of a lot more,” she said.

Kurt steps in

Meanwhile, Russell – whose movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had been enjoying a stellar first weekend – stood arm in arm with Hawn throughout proceedings. He even planted a passionate kiss on her while the pair posed on the carpet. And when it came time for the actor to speak, all Russell could do was effuse about his other half.

His wonderful life

“Goldie, to you, I owe my wonderful life,” Russell admitted from the podium. “Simply put, Goldie, I cherish you. All of the stars in the sky or the boulevard don’t hold a candle to that. There’s no one else I’d rather be next to than Goldie Hawn.”

Years to come

It seems that film fans can’t get enough of Hawn and Russell’s relationship, and their 1987 movie together is back in the spotlight, too. Recently, Overboard was remade with Anna Faris in Hawn’s role. And while we may not see Hawn and Russell on screen together soon, we can at least rest assured that the couple will be an item for years to come.

That said, while Hawn and Russell’s romance may look perfect, appearances can always be deceiving. Lucky for us, then, that Kate Hudson, Goldie’s daughter, has come forward with the unfiltered truth about her family. When she was just a girl, the household was rocked by a major crisis — one that brought Kurt into the picture. And while the events that unfolded were concealed from the public for years, Kate felt the need to set the world straight.

A Broken Family

It’s important to remember that Kate and Kurt were once strangers. Actor and musician Bill Hudson started out as the man of the house, but that family fell apart. Kate has described her relationship with her dad as “darkly comedic,” while Bill admitted, “It makes me feel horrible.” And in one interview, he seemingly dared her to change her last name. But is Kurt to blame for the distance between them?

Another Run-in

Kurt and Goldie joined forces for the drama Swing Shift. This was in the ’80s, five years after they first met on the set of a Disney film, but that apart wasn't an issue for the pair. There was another problem, though. “We both said we would never go out with another actor,” Goldie explained.

Breaking Rules

Those reservations didn’t last, because Goldie could tell Kurt was a good person. “He was so good-looking, but he had no pretense about him,” she said. “I could tell right away he wasn’t a womanizer.” And so the couple went on their first date — never anticipating the painful troubles one man would soon cause them.

Creating Their Family

Both Goldie and Kurt were bringing children into their new relationship. Kurt had a son, Boston Russell, and Goldie was a mom to Kate and her brother, Oliver. But blending families can be a complicated process. And things only got more complicated with an absent parental figure. Enter Bill.

Father Figure

A couple of years earlier, Goldie’s ex-husband had estranged himself from his former wife and children. And Bill had something to say about that. He claimed that Goldie was “willfully alienating” him from the family. Back then, Kate and Oliver were too young to understand what was happening. But Kurt decided to do something about it.

Such A Natural

“What really got me was when I watched my kids when they’d come to the set and how he was with them,” Goldie said of Kurt. “He was amazing with them. He was such a natural.” This kind of dedication once again showed that Kurt was in it for the long haul. But life wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows after this. Far from it.

Abandoned By A Parent

Kate and Oliver have both explained how difficult it was to deal with Bill. It was hard to know that their biological father didn’t care enough about them to raise them. “I think we both probably suffered differently and very similarly to anybody who feels abandoned by a parent,” Kate said.

Dedicated Parent

But Kurt dedicated his time to raising Kate and Oliver alongside Boston. And on the surface, it looked as though Kate loved spending her childhood with Kurt. She’s since spoken out about him, too. When Kurt celebrated his 70th birthday, Kate was just as full of praise for him as her mom was.

The Post

“Happy birthday, baby! What a wild ride. No, we never got married, but one thing that continues to grow is our love. You’re a wild one — brilliant, lovable, childlike, perfectly maddening, a father supreme, and deeply funny!” Goldie wrote on Instagram. “I can’t imagine my life without you at any age, Kurt Russell. You’re the catch. And you’re all mine.” Aww!

Kate’s Opinions

Goldie wasn’t the only one of Kurt’s relatives to post about him on the ’gram. Like her mother, Kate had plenty of wonderful things to share about her pa. “I’m gonna gush cause I don’t often about this man, but I figure since today he turns 70 I’m gonna let it out. Plus he’ll never see this,” Kate wrote. She also included a rather frightening thought.

One of a Kind

“I often wonder how different our life would have been if he never entered the picture. How different I would be,” Kate wrote of Kurt. “Let me fill you in. His laugh will echo through generations as powerful as his concocted stories of grandeur that may or may not be true (may we never know). He’s an original. One of a kind.” Sounds nice, but was that all she had to say about him?

An Immense Love

Nope! “[He’s] a powerful, intelligent, talented, loyal family man. He has taught me that we can all exist with immense love through our differences,” Kate went on. “And his dedication to my mother and their fight for love forever is as admirable as it gets. I love this man so much!” But there was one thing Kurt did that really stood out. According to Kate, anyway...

Living Courageously

“A note for all dads of girls. He gave me the gift of confidence instilling a knowingness in me that I deserved everything I worked for, and I knew that he’d always have my back in whatever challenges may lay ahead,” Kate wrote of her stepfather. “When you have a dad who gives you permission to be confident, you live courageously.” But the heartfelt actress wasn’t done yet.

Insta Love Letter

After penning a near-essay on why she loves Kurt, Kate had to remember why she started writing in the first place, “And that’s my Insta love letter to my dad who has lived 70 years today. Happy birthday, Pa. How bout we give some big Hip Hip Hoorays to this wild man!” And Kurt’s good influence only became clearer as Kate went through some life-altering changes.

Coordination

You see, Kate is now a parent of three to sons Ryder and Bingham and daughter Rani Rose. And she and Danny Fujikawa — Kate’s fiancé and Rani’s biological dad — have been coordinating parental duties. In a way, they’re just like Goldie and Kurt. “I’ve got multiple dads, I’ve got kids all over the place!” Kate said.

Family Time

“The only expectations I have that are really high in my life is with my kids and with family stuff,” Kate said. And during the pandemic, Kate’s been spending plenty of time with her family. “I never thought in a million years that I’d spend a year in one place,” she said.

The Reality of Parenting

“When you have so many kids, sometimes you have those moments where you’re hiding in your bathroom going, ‘Please, please, get me out of here!’” Kate added. And, apparently, her three children can work as a trio to annoy/entertain their mom. Plenty of parents will know that feeling!

A Full Home

As for Kate’s relationship with Kurt? Well, it still looks good. Until the world opens again, Kate’s family have apparently been staying with Goldie and her partner. Oliver and his three children are there, too.

Her Parenting Style

But Kate is also concerned with her children understanding their privilege. “I’m actually quite lenient as long as they're doing their part,” she said. “As far as I’m concerned, there’s what you’re entitled to, and then there’s your privileges.”

Moral Compass

“The only things you’re entitled to are a roof over your head, food, and my love. Everything else is a privilege,” Kate said. “And I’ll take it away in a heartbeat if you’re not respecting our home’s moral compass.” You have to keep that compass aligned.
