40 Startling Photos Taken On The Road That May Make You Do A Double Take

Although long journeys by car can often feel arduous and uninspiring, every now and then we spot something so out of place on the highway that it will live with us forever. And these 40 snaps capture some of the most hilarious, surprising and downright bizarre sights that have surely ever been witnessed on the road.

40. Extra trunk

If you’ve ever struggled to fit stuff into your car, you’ve probably thought, “Boy, I wish I had a bigger trunk.” But as we can see from this photo uploaded to Reddit, the owner of this vehicle appears to have taken that notion and run with it. Not only did they extend their trunk, but they also hitched a whole new one to the back of the car.

39. Tractor on a trailer

It takes a while to get your head around this optical illusion. If you look closely, though, you’ll see that the trailer is actually carrying a tiny toy tractor. And while we can only imagine how confusing this sight was in real life, the driver of the wagon probably found it hilarious watching people’s reactions to his unusual load.

38. Souped-up Smart car

It’s not totally clear what’s going on here, but our best guess is that someone decided to make a hybrid between a truck and a Smart car. And while it’s hard to understand how this Transformer-esque contraption would be beneficial in any way, there were a handful of admiring comments on Reddit when this shot appeared there in 2018. One user wrote of the strange ride, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”

37. Raccoon on the road

As we’ve established, a furry friend can really make long drives much more bearable. However, while it’s common to see dogs on the road, it’s much rarer to witness a raccoon being transported by motor vehicle. It’s easy, then, to see why someone would want to capture this scene with a photo – although the critter and his owner may not have been impressed with the attention.

36. Hammer time

It’s not every day that you see a giant hammer being towed along on the back of a pickup truck. People couldn’t help but think that they’d seen this massive mallet before, though, when the above picture was posted to Reddit in 2019. One commenter quipped, for instance, “Looks like Thor lost his hammer again.”

35. That’s one way to transport a table

You may assume that transporting what appears to be a rather large dining table on a small scooter would be nigh-on impossible. However, if this picture proves anything, it’s that where there’s a will, there’s a way. And while we’re definitely not recommending that you follow suit, the scene certainly brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “meals on wheels.”

34. Banana car

We’ve heard of a banana boat, but a banana car is a new one to us. And while it’s not clear what the purpose of such a vehicle could be, it sure looks ap-peel-ing to drive around. A bit of digging on the internet suggests that the novelty vehicle may belong to eccentric Englishman Steve Braithwaite, who apparently built tit using a modified pick-up truck.

33. Just Roman along

It’s not often that you see two centurions venturing down the highway on the back of a makeshift chariot. And in 2018 one Reddit user couldn’t resist sharing a snap of the scene after spotting this sight from their car window. They won the internet, too, after writing next to the photo, “They see me Roman… they hatin.’”

32. Epic snow pile

Clearing snow off your car can be a serious pain, but we’re not sure that this driver has the solution. That icy load on the roof could cause a serious accident, after all. And even if other folks on the the road manage to stay safe, the vehicle’s suspension seems to be seriously struggling under the weight of that massive chunk.

31. Passenger pooch

Road trips can be dull, so why not liven them up with a furry friend riding shotgun? And this pooch seems to be taking everything in its stride, as we can see from this shot uploaded to Reddit. The dog’s pretty much the perfect passenger, in fact.

30. A warning for would-be thieves

While vehicle robberies are sadly just a fact of life, deterrents can help. And what would make breaking into a haulage van less tempting than the idea of being fronted by a completely nude trucker? Take a look at this photo and judge for yourself. In fact, maybe the company behind this warning is on to something.

29. Car performing a skateboard trick

This kind of move will look familiar to anyone who grew up playing Tony Hawk-branded video games – although grinding is usually performed on a skateboard rather than a car. Perhaps the driver had mastered the trick on their deck and decided to take it to the next level?

28. The Batmobile

It’s not often that we see Batman fighting crime outside of his native Gotham City. Sometimes, though, his work takes him to other places – or so we can assume from this picture snapped in Oklahoma and later published on Reddit. And even if this wasn’t the real superhero, he no doubt turned a few heads.

27. Traveling T. rex

You’d probably think about keeping your distance if you saw this scary dinosaur on the road ahead. However, the pranksters among us may have different ideas. In 2012 one Reddit commenter wrote in response to this picture, “If that was in front of me and my passenger was sleeping, I’d drive really close and then scream, ‘Oh my God, we’re all going to die.’”

26. The humble Bentley

Bentley is among the most expensive car brands in the world, and so driving around in one of the company’s vehicles practically screams wealth and excess. But just because you can afford a pricey set of wheels doesn’t mean that you can’t keep it real, as this photo from Reddit proves. Yep, apparently it’s possible to own a whip and stay humble at the same time.

25. Whatever this is…

When someone posted this picture to Imgur in 2018, they said that they had “so many questions.” Frankly, so do we – starting with “What the heck is this thing?” Well, according to the Italian newspaper la Repubblica, it’s a fiberglass shell used as part of an advertising campaign that boasts the slogan “The future is coming.”

24. Haunted house truck

We’ve heard of Pimp My Ride, but this takes the concept behind the classic MTV show to a whole new height. According to a Redditor, the creepy van cost $17,000 and was used to promote a haunted house. And as passing this vehicle on the road would be spooky in itself, we’re guessing that the attraction it was advertising wasn’t for the fainthearted.

23. Welcome to Jurassic Park

If you’re driving down the highway and spot this vehicle on the road, you’d probably assume that you’d taken a major wrong turn at some point. After all, this Jurassic Park-branded Jeep Wrangler is a near-exact match for the cars that transport staff around the ill-fated dinosaur zoo in the famous movie franchise. And those familiar with the original 1993 film will know that trips out in one of these vehicles rarely end well.

22. Not the steps to success

We’re not sure about the best way to transport a ladder, but we’re willing to bet that this isn’t it. Still, one good thing did come from this misguided excursion: a whole load of great puns when an image of the scene in question landed on Reddit in 2019. Among the best? “We’ve found the bottom rung of society.”

21. Hungry shark

In a hilarious twist of fate, a shark-shaped bus advertising Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium in New Zealand follows behind what looks like a giant Filet-O-Fish. It almost looks, then, as though the hungry predator is about to seal the deal on his catch of the day.

20. Defiant dog

Blocking a pedestrian crossing is, of course, a major faux pas when driving. But this defiant doggo didn’t seem to care much for the rules, as this picture shows. With one paw stretched out of the window, the pooch simply stared at the person they were inconveniencing – completely unperturbed. It’s almost as if it didn’t even know the regulations of the road.

19. The daily grind

The user who posted this image to Reddit in 2018 mused, “Somebody is not having a great morning…” That’s rather an understatement, as the driver in question is not only without a tire but also half of their wheel. And that stream of sparks they’re leaving in their wake is pretty unnerving to see, too.

18. The road to ruin

We certainly wouldn’t like to be the driver responsible for this disaster. The Redditor who uploaded this shot was apparently one of the workmen laying the fresh road, and according to him, the unfortunate woman both wrecked her car and received a ticket for destruction of public property. Her insurance company had to fork out for a new lane to boot.

17. This hilarious hybrid

This could have been the car that Dr. Frankenstein created if he’d turned his talents to automobiles rather than people. And while this part-pick-up and part-coupé hybrid has got a look only its owner could love, there is an upside. As one Redditor pointed out in 2019, the vehicle is “so ugly [that] nobody will ever want to steal it.”

16. Captain America

It seems that superheroes use our roads more often than you think, as here we see Captain America on his way to save the world once more. Either that, or some random biker has stolen his shield – and we know which version of events we’d rather believe.

15. Ashtray hack

Picture the scene: you’re cruising along smoking a cigarette or two, only to realize that there’s no good way to dispense of the butts. After all, leaving them in the ashtray can get pretty gross after a while, and throwing them out of the window is just plain wrong. So, next time this happens to you, make like this guy and place the used smokes in your wing mirror for safekeeping.

14. Conspiracy car

Many of us will have come across someone who’s a little too into their conspiracy theories. And it seems that this person in an SUV might be one of those people. They’ve chosen to cover their rear window in flat Earth propaganda – presumably in the hopes of converting a few folks while out on the road.

13. Oh deer

What better way to enjoy good weather than by rolling your top down and taking your stuffed animals out on the road? Either that, or – as one Redditor suggested in 2019 – this image captures a “taxidermist wanting to use the carpool lane.” And whatever’s actually happening here, it’s given a whole new meaning to the term “stag party.”

12. A new kind of funeral

This image of a hearse pulling a woodchipper understandably sparked a number of questions when it was posted to Reddit in 2017 – not least whether it was a new way of getting rid of dead loved ones. One commenter even hinted at a gruesome scene from the 1996 film Fargo, which sees a character disposing of a body using a very similar machine.

11. Interesting use of a sack truck

One thing these photos have taught us is that people are coming up with ever-inventive ways to transport unwieldy objects. For example, in order to move this long load, someone has simply hitched the overhang to the simplest of tools: a sack truck.

10. Bus-riding grandma

Although it’s frustrating not being able to board a full-to-capacity bus, we certainly wouldn’t recommend taking matters into your own hands like this. And while it seems that this little old lady had no fear when she hitched herself to the back of a vehicle – clinging on for dear life as she went – we just hope that she made it home in one piece.

9. Mistaken overpass

Even if exit signs are sometimes a little on the confusing side, we can’t think of anything that excuses someone driving up a footbridge after mistaking it for an overpass. They even appear to have had to drive over a grass verge to get there, which leads us to ask: what on Earth were they thinking?

8. Penny-farthing rack

This image led users on Reddit to conclude that anyone using their bike rack to transport a penny-farthing had to be the biggest hipster going. Indeed, after the photo was posted to the site in 2019, a Redditor joked of the driver, “Spectacular. His beard and love of craft beers must be off the charts.”

7. The mummy returns

We can only imagine the fright that a Redditor received when this mummy appeared next to them at a red light. The scene is so strange, in fact, that it led some people online to wonder if the woman driving was carrying her creepy companion in order to use the carpool lane. On the other hand, maybe she just enjoys startling people as she rolls by.

6. Deck on wheels

This deck – boasting wheels and seemingly some kind of engine – can be enjoyed in any location its owner desires. And, apparently, it can pick up quite a speed; the poster of the shot wrote on Reddit that they had seen the portable patio doing “70 mph down the highway.”

5. Cut-price coupé

It seems that the owner of this car wasn’t going to let a meager budget deter them from building the ride of their dreams. However, while the modifications made to the vehicle may have reduced drag and therefore improved its fuel economy, they don’t exactly add to its looks.

4. Smuggled hydrant

We definitely have a number of questions about this. For example, how did a hydrant become wedged upside down between two truck tires? Also, has the driver even noticed their new cargo? And if not, how are they still rolling along unaware? But while we may never know the full details of what occurred here, the photo certainly got people talking on Reddit.

3. The ultimate window sticker

Humorous bumper stickers can often be a source of entertainment on long drives. That said, not everyone was impressed when this shot was uploaded onto Imgur. Covering the entire rear window, the adhesive reads, “Warning! We can’t see s**t because of this awesome sticker.” It skirts a thin line between funny and infuriating, then, for those following the car on the road.

2. Flipped bonnet

This car was photographed cruising along the highway even though its driver had their view severely obscured by a flipped hood. It’s not known how this happened, or how long the vehicle was on the road in this state, but hopefully they managed to rectify the situation before anyone got hurt.

1. Snake riding shotgun

Every responsible pet owner knows not to leave a dog in a hot car for any length of time – even if you remember to crack a window. However, it’s unclear whether the same should be said for snakes. And while we’re still wondering why someone would choose to take their viper out for a spin, perhaps it’s just their novel way of deterring thieves.

But you won’t only see strange sights on the road; sometimes, they may appear at weddings. Yes, often a couple’s big day doesn’t go entirely to plan. And while the bride and groom may not be amused at any mishaps being captured for posterity on camera, they’re still completely hilarious for the rest of us.

This bride, for example, couldn’t have accounted for someone jay-walking across the aisle and haplessly tripping over her dress during the wedding march. That might be taking “falling head over heels” a bit too literally!

This may have seemed like a romantic idea for a photo opportunity at first, but they had to go and choose a photographer with rather a warped sense of humor.

We’re not sure quite what the idea behind this photo was, but we’re fairly sure the kid shouldn’t have been learning about the birds and the bees that day.

Butt-waving cat doesn’t care about your perfect moment.

Maybe they thought that if they did it in unison it could be passed off as some kind of good luck ritual for the happy couple.

The exact moment that the best man turned into the worst man and proved he never liked that bridesmaid anyway.

It was the shortest marriage in history – namely, when the bride discovered that her groom had more than just an eye for other ladies.

This could only have been the result of an unfortunate gust of wind – and let’s just say that you’ll only find one variety of that indoors.

Confetti was evidently too obvious a choice for this guy.

“Do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health as long as you both shall live?”
“Neigh!”

If her eyes – and hand – were already wandering, the future of this marriage doesn’t look good.

Wedding days are tiring, sure, but he could at least have made it to bed before disappointing the bride.

Although he never knew it at the time, the photographer captured for all eternity the moment that grandma fell over.

Funnily enough, none of the bridesmaids minded when the bride told them of the dress code – or, rather, lack of it.

Saving a flower girl and keeping his eyes on the camera the whole time? This guy’s a hero.

This is why you don’t let kids wander at weddings. Well, this and those times when they lick all the buffet food and then put it back.

Let’s hope his hand just slipped.

This image brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “the bridesmaid was a real dog.”

Proof, if any were needed, that getting hitched gives you the power of levitation.

Not even a royal wedding plays out without a photo fail, but it’s almost reassuring that kids are kids whatever the occasion.

Whatever is going on in this image may be a stretch beyond the role’s requirements. Is this bridesmaid really checking if the dress color is appropriate?

Comedian and actor W.C. Fields famously said, “Never work with children or animals,” and the bride and groom in this shot should definitely have taken note. That’s a clear example of dogged determination to carry the train and not let go – no matter what.

What could make for a more romantic backdrop to a wedding snap? The sun… the sea… the stonework… the sagging belly of a booze-guzzling man…

That sinking feeling the photographer has as he realizes he’s going to get sued for his choice of wedding snap location…

“Mom, I’m bored… Can I go play?”
“No problem, honey, I’m sure you can’t get into too much trouble…”

“Woof… I love it when we do it wedding couple-style.”

This couple have clearly taken the notion of a marriage of convenience to its logical conclusion.

It’s hard to tell who looks happiest in this photo. Is it the just-married bride and groom gazing adoringly into each other’s eyes? Or the man in the red Speedos who saw the perfect photo-bombing opportunity?

What a lovely pair. We mean pair of pears. We mean couple. What a lovely couple…

Go ahead, pick your nose. No-one’s going to notice a little thing like that. It’s not like you’re the focus of attention or anything…

The young ring bearer couldn’t have been more pleased for the happy couple. That is, until he realized there would be icky kissing.

Give us a wave. No, not that kind… We love how the bridesmaid has grabbed the bride’s gown to save herself. If she goes down, she’s not going alone.

Here it is in black and white: one usher’s pure delight during such a happy occasion.

It’s a wedding. Inevitably, tiers will fall…

We said that you should never ever work with children or animals. And this flower girl’s fighting a losing battle for sure.

“Hey, I need to fit you all in the frame. Back a bit… a bit more… a little more… Oh. My bad.”

“Are you feeling alright, honey? You’re looking a little flushed.”

“Darling, I’d do anything to protect you. Whaddya mean that’s a load of bull?”

Well, I’ll just sit here and stare straight ahead and pretend this isn’t happening right now. Totally awks…

“Oh my God, I’m so happy for them I think I’m gonna spew chunks…”

This is what it looks like when the groom’s friends get a little too enthusiastic at the wedding.

This bride and groom decided to get married because they really dig each other.

We’re pretty sure that’s not in the usual list of best man duties.

It’s mortifying enough when wedding guests show up wearing the same outfit – so just imagine such a catastrophe happening to the bride…

What’s so spectacular about this equine photobomb is that it appears the horse made the effort to just blend in.

Hopefully this isn’t an omen.

Since weddings can be expensive, why not bring the costs down by sharing the venue with another event? Make sure to tell your photographer beforehand, though.

Wedding photoshoots on the beach can be incredibly romantic. And what could possibly go wrong?

The look on this poor bride’s face makes us wonder if anything actually went right on her big day.

Taking the words “to have and to hold” to whole new levels.

To be honest, we’re not sure what role a few reptiles might play at a wedding. And judging by the look on this bride’s face, neither is she.

When your wedding dreams envision getting married underneath golden arches but your budget doesn’t stretch very far.

The bride strongly rejected any suggestion that she would be living in her new husband’s shadow.

It’s hard to tell whether this is a classic cake-smooshed-in-the-face prank, or if the bride and groom have fallen out already.

Here we can see the exact moment when sheer horror turns to uncontrollable laughter as the bride realizes there’s nothing that can be done: that gorgeous wedding cake has a one-way ticket to the floor.

When she said she was going to hit the dance floor, no one envisioned it would look like this.

That awkward moment when the hotel cleaner makes a surprise guest appearance in the parents-of-the-happy-couple wedding shot.

It’s not clear if that’s a look of exasperation from the bride, or relief that it’s the groom who’s catching the splash-back on his shoes, instead of over her dress. The page boys clearly want nothing to do with the situation, however.

This may be an unforeseen photobomb for the mom with the stroller. But we can’t help but be impressed that her baby seems perfectly accessorized for the occasion.

What you can see here are the perils of choosing a public location for a wedding photo-shoot. Especially when it’s peak time for walkies.

The good news: our bride’s a whizz with engines, so she’ll still make it to the church on time, no problem. The bad news: by the time she’s done, it won’t be a white wedding – more like a grubby gray-to-black one.

We wonder if this is the moment the bride had second thoughts, even after she said “I do.”

Was this the most thoroughly planned wedding in history? Imagine the conversation beforehand, which must have gone, “…and of course we’ll need a very long ladder to hand, just in case we need to retrieve the veil from a tree.”

It’s not clear why this dog went so crazy for the bride’s bouquet. Hopefully they are just flowers and not the canine equivalent of catnip.

We’re pretty sure it’s more typical for the best man to chase the bridesmaids, not the just-married groom.

There may be some sort of veiled symbolism to this mishap. The bride seems to have trapped her man – in this case, quite literally.

There’s nothing like a classy bride and groom send-off. And this is nothing like a classy bride and groom send-off.

Although the bride and groom have already said “I do,” something about the bride’s face in this picture says “just don’t.”

A rare sighting of a Sasquatch was completely lost on this bride and groom – at least, until they looked through their photos later on.

What you see here is an unused scene from the movie Forrest Gump where Tom Hanks’ character accidentally crashes a wedding party.

This may have been unfortunate timing for the bride and groom’s wedding photos. But for the delivery company it says, “We will absolutely get your parcel there on time, no matter whose party we have to crash.”
