Cheerleading is often dismissed as merely a hobby, not a sport. But one group of cheerleaders from Georgia proved everyone wrong when they performed a routine full of explosive energy, extreme strength and impressive coordination. Moreover, it broke the internet and it’s easy to see why.
There’s been a certain video circulating the internet for a while, and it just keeps on racking up the likes. The video only shows a bunch of cheerleaders performing at a state championship, which is nothing unusual. There are thousands upon thousands of similar videos online.
However, there’s something about this one that makes it stand out from the crowd. The video may only be two-and-a-half minutes long, but it’s long enough to showcase some of the highest-quality cheerleading that the internet has ever laid eyes upon.
The cheerleading squad who feature in the viral video are from Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia. In the video, each member of the cheer team is dressed proudly in the school colors, red and blue, as they prepare to start an explosive cheer routine.
But this isn’t just any old cheer routine. The girls are not simply performing at a high-school football game or practicing an old routine. In fact, the reason that the girls are being filmed is because they are competing in a huge state cheerleading competition.
At the start of the footage, The Columbus High School team are about to perform a killer routine at the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state championships. They are standing in a tight formation, ready to knock the socks off the judges and the crowd.
As the music starts, the cheerleaders burst into action. Within the first few seconds, several of them have performed backflips across the stage, and one girl has been flung high into the air, before twisting and turning back into the arms of her teammates on the ground.
After such an explosive start, it is obvious that this isn’t going to be an average routine by any means. After several more of the cheerleaders perform three backflips in a row, the troupe form a platform by crouching with their backs parallel to the floor.
Then the music changes and the words from Manfred Mann’s “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy” can be heard. As the lyrics, “There she was, just walking down the street,” play out, two members of the troupe run along the backs of their teammates, who have formed the “street” with their bodies.
Then the music skips to a new song, and all the cheerleaders rush to form four separate groups. Within a short space of time, each group of four has lifted one member high about their heads. But that isn’t all. The four raised performers reach back to grab one foot.
All four girls manage to hold the technically very difficult pose for a few seconds, showing great core strength and balance. Then, on the same cue, all four of the elevated performers tumble through the air, only to be caught by their teammates waiting for them below.
The routine continues with more flips and rotations to wow the crowd. But then the 16-strong troupe does something truly impressive. They form three lines, and with incredible energy, they jump into the air in unison with their legs in the splits position.
If that isn’t impressive enough in itself, the cheerleaders do the same move three times in a row, before finishing off that section of the routine with a backflip each. The whole thing is performed in perfect unison, reconfirming once more just how talented these girls really are.
After that, all the cheerleaders split up and head to different corners of the performance mat. And then, as the music changes once again, the troupe burst into a series of flips. Each of them performs running jumps to allow them to complete three rotations.
After tumbling across the mat, making it look easy, the cheerleaders gather in the middle of the floor again to take the routine to the next level. The following section is more of a dance routine – a stark comparison to the gymnastics display moments before.
A sassy and fun dance routine ensues, with the girls performing slick moves in perfect time with each other. Then it is time to start building up to the explosive finale by lifting four teammates high into the air. Two of them are repeatedly boosted into the air, showing impressive skill by landing on a different foot each time.
As four cheerleaders remain suspended above the heads of their troupe, a fifth member of the group jumps onto the shoulders of a teammate in the middle of the formation. Then the music starts building to signify that the end of the routine is near.
The incredible show culminates with all five of the elevated cheerleaders striking a strong pose, as their teammates support them below. It is a truly impressive spectacle and as soon as the music stops, the girls simply can’t contain their excitement.
They scream and jump in the air, clearly delighted with how well the routine went. They nailed it and became the winners of the GHSA state championships that year (2008). It’s no wonder that the video of the routine went totally viral.
It has received a whopping 12 million views since it was first uploaded, as well as thousands of comments from people blown away by their skills. “I will never get over how perfectly executed that routine was,” someone wrote, and plenty of people agreed. The only thing that people seemed to question was how the cheerleaders had quite so much energy by the end!
