In February 2015 Rothana Mao and his very pregnant girlfriend, Lindsay Haswood, decided to throw a party to announce the gender of their unborn baby. And the reveal came in the form of a large cake with pink and blue icing. But when Mao cut a slice, there came a twist that no one could have predicted.
Some couples are lucky enough to meet early on in their lives. Finding each other when they are young, these people have the opportunity to spend a long time together. And when family is important to them, they might choose to start their own pretty quickly. Because when you know it’s right, why not?
Take Mao and Haswood as an example. Mao graduated from Western Michigan University in 2010 with a qualification in sales and business marketing, and it wasn’t long afterwards that he met his future partner. And when he and Haswood got together in October 2013, he knew that she was “the one.”
In an Instagram post in August 2016, Mao proclaimed Haswood to be his “forever WCW.” For those who don’t know, “WCW” is short for “Woman Crush Wednesday.” This is a weekly social media occurrence where some people tag their secret (or not-so-secret) female crushes, whether celebrity or real life.
For Mao, it was very much a real-life crush. He continued to write in the post, “[Haswood has] had my heart since the day we met. She’s… helped me grow into a better person. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her. Love you babe!” Like we said: when you know, you know.
Lucky for Mao, then, that Haswood reciprocates the feeling. In an earlier Instagram post, this one dated July 2014, he shared a gift that his love had bought him. It was at a time when Coca-Cola was selling cans with personalized names on them, and Haswood had given him one with the word “Soulmate” on it.
Just two months after the “Soulmate” post, Mao shared some exciting news with his Instagram followers. He posted a picture of the couple together, holding pictures from a scan. The caption reads, “God has finally answered our prayers. Lindsay and I are pleased to announce that we are expecting our first child.”
Yes, the excited couple were expecting the first addition to their family in April 2015. There were, however, no obvious signs of an imminent wedding. But with the impending arrival of their baby, they could be forgiven for having bigger things to prepare for. Babies are, after all, very hard work.
But first there was the matter of the gender-reveal party. As already mentioned, the party took place in February 2015, two months before the baby was due to arrive. By all appearances, it was a simple affair, with Mao and Haswood opting for a cake with the baby’s gender being revealed by the color of the filling inside.
The cake itself was a large one. After all, there were guests to feed. It was covered in blue icing, with a pink icing bow trim. All of which was presumably to keep people guessing whether they were expecting a boy or a girl. There was also a white cloud on top, and it was dotted with a yellow moon and stars all over.
On the cake was an inscription. It read, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star… How we wonder what you are…” We can take this to mean that the “Little Star” is their unborn child. And of course, everyone was wondering what its gender would be. So without further hesitation, Haswood made the first cut.
The expectant mom then made a second cut. “That’s a big piece!” Haswood exclaimed, somewhat surprised at the generous slice she was about to remove from the cake. And as she carefully extracted the wedge, she lifted it up to get a good look at the filling. What color would it be?
As it happened, it was blue. The couple were expecting a baby boy! Haswood – perhaps a little hormonally – was overcome with emotion at the revelation. Yes, she seemed as stunned as everyone else at the news and shrieked with joy.
Haswood then gave her boyfriend and father of her unborn child a hug and wiped an emotional tear from her eye. A party guest also gave the expectant mom a hug. And for all the emotion, it would have been easy to believe that the mom-to-be hadn’t known the baby’s gender at all. Had Mao kept it a secret from her?
Whatever the case may have been, Mao went in to cut a second wedge of cake. Well, it wasn’t going to eat itself, was it? But it was at that point that things took a twist no one saw coming. As he removed another slice, the soon-to-be dad pulled something else from the center of the cake.
“What’s that?” Haswood asked as Mao started to unravel whatever he’d removed from the middle of the cake. It appeared to be a parcel in plastic wrap. And as Mao continued to untangle whatever was contained in it, the onlookers grew increasingly curious. Indeed, what could it be?
The partygoers fell silent as Mao revealed the mysterious object. Some even started to draw their own conclusions as to what was happening. “Just kidding!” someone offered. Had the couple misled everyone with the gender reveal and were about to unveil something else entirely? Was it a girl? Was it twins?
But then Mao pulled a small white box from the plastic wrap. And as he did so, he got down on one knee. Everyone in the room shrieked and cheered as they realized that the gender reveal had also become a marriage proposal. Everyone that is, except Haswood, who cried some more.
The expectant mom of course said yes as the room erupted with applause. And Haswood and Mao became the proud parents of baby Neiko three months after the party. Mao admitted in an October 2017 Instagram post, “One of the things I love about being a dad [is] being a kid again.”
Although the couple don’t appear to have tied the knot just yet, it’s not without good reason. Not only have they had their hands full with Neiko, but they have since welcomed another addition to their family. In fact, in November 2017, Haswood gave birth to a baby girl, Rowan. And however they revealed the gender of baby number two, surely nothing could top that incredibly sweet video…
