Like many teenagers, this Florida girl was mortified by her father’s wardrobe. However, when she confronted him about it, he reacted in the most unexpected manner. That’s because her dad decided to do something about her attitude in the most extreme way possible.
Bradley Herbst and his daughter, Sydney, come from Jacksonville, Florida. For the most part, they enjoy a great relationship. Nonetheless, like many teenagers, Sydney often finds her dad to be embarrassing.
“He embarrasses me all the time,” Sydney said during an interview with Today in April 2017. However, there was one thing in particular that really made the 14-year-old blush – her dad’s dress sense.
To make matters worse, it was Bradley who did the school run. So, after a while, Sydney decided to confront her father about his fashion sense. “One day, she was being a typical teenager and said, ‘You cannot wear that to school,’” the father-of-two revealed.
However, Bradley was having none of Sydney’s protests. “All it was was shorts and a T-shirt,” he said in his own defense. Nonetheless, that did nothing to appease his teenage daughter. Indeed, she remained mortified about the prospect of her friends seeing her old man.
As a result, Bradley decided to level with the teenager. He told her that if he couldn’t wear his own clothes, then he’d have to find another solution. However, Sydney wasn’t going to like her dad’s new wardrobe any more than his old one.
That’s because Bradley decided to raid the family’s dressing-up basket. In it, he found a wealth of accessories to take his daughter’s embarrassment to a new level. So, he started wearing elaborate wigs when dropping Sydney off at school.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, her dad’s latest stunt didn’t go down well with the teen. “I was, like, completely embarrassed,” Sydney admitted. “I would duck down under so that no one could see me.”
That’s when Sydney decided that enough was enough. So, she agreed to make a deal with her dad. She had to forgo social media and texting on her way to school. Otherwise, Bradley would walk in with her wearing whatever costume he had on that day.
Reluctantly, Sydney agreed. “I had to turn my phone off and put it away in my bag,” she later explained. “And, if it’s on he will get out of the car and walk me into school.” What’s more, the deal proved effective.
Every day, Bradley would get ready in whatever costume he could lay his hands on. Then, before leaving the house he would take some photographs and document the latest look on social media. Moreover, thanks to his efforts, he managed to bag himself some precious father-daughter time.
“I’ve never had my phone on. Ever,” Sydney said. Nonetheless, although the deal achieved Bradley’s aim, he still couldn’t seem to give his costumes up. Indeed, as time passed, his outfits became more and more elaborate.
“During the summer Olympics I was Michael Phelps,” the enthusiastic dad revealed. “I was a secret service agent during the Inauguration Day. I was Pharaoh for the Passover holiday, and I was a Chippendale one day.”
Furthermore, all the while Bradley continued to post the snaps on his social media page. Usually, he made sure that Sydney featured in the action too. As a result, her unamused glare became as much of a staple in the photographs as her dad’s extreme costumes.
Consequently, it wasn’t long before the father-daughter duo went viral. “How happy it made people feel was really cool,” Bradley said. “And, what’s nice is that people from all over the country now are sending me ideas.”
Bradley’s designated dressing-up time is now every Friday. That’s when his fans can expect him to reveal his latest creation. Often, he really gets into character. Nevertheless, while his fans can’t get enough, his kids are far less impressed.
However, for Bradley that’s a price worth paying for some one-on-one time with his teenage daughter. During their drives, the dad gets to hear all about Sydney’s studies and what’s going on in her life. Moreover, he wouldn’t swap that for the world.
“It’s hard, with a 14-year-old, to talk to them,” he later admitted in his interview with Today. “I mean, they come home, they’re on their phones. This is a way that I’ve found that I get my time with my little girl.”
In fact, deep down, Sydney enjoys her revitalized bond with her father as well. When pressed to admit that she was happy with her dad’s deal, she eventually confessed that she loved it. “I do. I hate to say it, but I do,” the teen admitted.
So, for Bradley, that’s all the matters. Although his approach to securing some time with his daughter may be unconventional, there’s no denying that it’s been effective. “Whenever we’re together we’re going to have fun,” he said. “And, we’re creating memories for a lifetime.”
