Angela and Lavar Fleming sit at the center of the gender reveal party for their unborn baby, ready to find out if they are expecting a boy or a girl. However, it won’t be a bunch of pink or blue balloons in the nearby box, but a trio of white ones. And then the Flemings find out the heartbreaking reason why.
The Flemings were all smiles at the start of their gender reveal party. Behind them floated an arch of blue, pink and yellow balloons, while blue letters spelled out “Baby Fleming” on a pink backdrop. There was even a model of a pregnant woman made up of balloons watching over the scene.
And the party guests were just as excited to find out the baby’s gender. One guest shouted “team girl” and “team boy,” pausing for applause after each announcement to gauge what gender the crowd predicted the Flemings’ child would be.
But the only person who knew that answer with certainty was Tiniki Thomas, a friend of the parents-to-be. You see, the expectant couple had given Thomas the card that stated the child’s gender, and Thomas’ job was therefore to prepare the blue or pink surprise for the party.
And to reveal the momentous news, Thomas chose to place balloons inside a box. That way, when the lid was opened, the balloons would float up and share the couple’s joyous news with everyone. Thomas also decorated the container with giant pink and blue bows as well as the words “Boy or Girl?”
Ahead of the big reveal, however, dad-to-be Lavar could hardly contain himself. In fact, he almost opened the box before the party guests had even started their countdown. Angela stopped him in the nick of time, though, to give the guests the chance to build the anticipation.
Then, as soon as those ten seconds were over, Angela excitedly ripped back the wrapping paper on top of the box. But while a set of blue or pink balloons should typically have floated out, a trio of white ones emerged from the box instead.
Unsurprisingly, when Angela saw that the balloons were an unexpected color, she shouted, “What?” But once the balloons floated a little bit higher, the mom-to-be realized that there was a note attached to them. And the letter would explain the inflatable items’ hue to Angela, Lavar and the rest of their guests.
Angela subsequently reached for the note and quietly read it to herself. She then shouted “Aww” before handing the message to her husband and breaking down in tears. Some partygoers also hugged the expectant mother – although most in the room still didn’t know what she’d just read.
It was up to Lavar, then, to share the note with everyone else at the party. And the emotion was clear in his voice as he slowly read the message. “These three balloons represent Jaden, Jordan and nephew David,” he said as Angela continued to cry.
The heartbreaking message didn’t end there, either. The note then said of the three people named earlier, “We all know [they] are running around in heaven. Even though they seem so far apart, they will always have a special place in our heart.” The poignant paper also went on to offer congratulations to the Flemings on their baby.
And it was hardly surprising that the note had caused such a powerful response. You see, it turned out that the three names mentioned were those of babies whom Angela, Lavar and other members of their family had lost to miscarriage. Tragically, two of these miscarriages were the Flemings’, while the other was suffered by a sister of one of the couple. Thomas later wrote on YouTube, “It took a lot to get [Angela and Lavar] where they were that day, so emotions were at an all-time high.”
Thomas also said that it was important to include the Flemings’ history that day. “They expected the box, but we decided [to let] them know the other babies had not been forgotten,” she wrote. And judging by the emotion shown by Angela and Lavar, the gesture meant a lot.
Of course, Thomas still had to fulfill her duties as the one person entrusted with the knowledge of the baby’s gender. So, after her touching tribute, she presented the Flemings with a final surprise.
As the celebrations continued at a pace, one of the guests stepped behind Angela and Lavar and towards one of the decorations. The partygoer then grabbed the pregnant woman made of balloons and carried it to the couple. Meanwhile, someone in the room shouted, “Here’s the reveal!”
Yes, Thomas had come up with a very creative twist on the traditional gender reveal party. While the Flemings were aware of the plan to place balloons inside a box, they had no idea that the decoration’s balloon belly would actually hold the answer to their boy-or-girl question.
With the excitement building, a party guest told Angela and Lavar, “In this baby balloon. In the belly. This is what you’re having.” Once again, though, the couple would have to wait as their friends and family counted them down from ten. Then the proud parents-to-be could pop the balloon.
At the end of ten seconds, Angela had the honor of revealing the gender of their child. And when she popped the inflatable belly, a flutter of smaller pink balloons floated out. The Flemings were having a girl, it seemed, and practically everyone in the room screamed with excitement.
Some of those who later watched the video of the reveal on YouTube seemingly couldn’t contain their emotions, either. Joana Perez wrote, for instance, “[That was] the most beautiful gender reveal that I’ve ever seen. Made me cry as well.” And there was a reason why Perez had found the video so emotional. “I’ve myself lost a baby at 23 weeks and had two miscarriages. It’s been so hard for me,” she went on to reveal.
But while the Flemings’ momentous day had more than a touch of poignancy, it was still a very happy time for the family. And Thomas’ hard work hadn’t gone unnoticed, either. Yes, Perez also took time to laud the Flemings’ friend for her outstanding effort on the reveal. The empathetic YouTube user then signed off by wishing the family the best of luck with their “little princess.”
