In 2017 A Teen On The Dr. Phil Show Was Told That Her Baby May Have Caudal Regression Syndrome

After years of turmoil, it’s safe to say that the relationship between mother Krystina Carrino and daughter Samantha Stamatakis was rocky. Samantha, who suffers from diabetes, was not taking her illness seriously. Indeed, she would often skip school, neglect her medicine and smoke cigarettes. But after she fell pregnant, Samantha’s actions were putting not only herself in danger, but her unborn baby, too.

The 19-year-old was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was just seven years old. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the illness. And this means that the New Jersey born teen will require treatment for the rest of her life. Indeed, treatment of diabetes type 1 often involves self-administering an injection of insulin up to four times a day.

The illness, which is frequently genetic, causes the immune system to attack its own pancreatic cells. And as a result, the pancreas then struggles to create insulin. This, in turn, causes blood sugar levels to become dangerously high. Therefore, it is vital that people with diabetes take very good care of themselves and their health.

Doctors advise diabetics to eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, avoid smoking, exercise regularly, and limit their alcohol intake. However, according to her mom Krystina, Samantha wasn’t sticking to any of this advice. Indeed, to many, it seemed the teen – who dropped out of high school when she was in 11th grade – was on a path of self-destruction.

What’s more, 50-year-old Krystina claimed her teenage daughter had already had more sexual partners than she had. Including Samantha’s baby daddy, who at 33 is 14 years her senior. However, it was not just the out of control behavior that concerned Krystina. It was that her daughter simply took no interest in her illness. Frequently, for example, the teen would forget to take her insulin or check her sugar levels, and in doing so she was putting herself at serious risk. Not only that, but Samantha simply refused to listen to what the doctors had to say.

Samantha knew that if she carried on ignoring medical advice and failing to treat her diabetes, she risked developing several complications, including the loss of her sight and her limbs. Indeed, her mom worked seven days a week to ensure that she had enough money to pay for Samantha’s medication – whether she was taking it or not.

There was, however, only so much patience that Krystina could afford. And the final straw for the concerned mom came when her 19-year-old daughter announced that she was pregnant. The pregnancy was a result of a drunken one-night stand, even though Samantha is two years below the legal drinking age. And upon hearing the news, her mother threw her out of the family home.

And so Samantha went to live with friends, before they too asked her to leave. She then returned to her mom with empty promises of change. However, six months on and Samantha had resorted back to her bad habits. But as soon as Krystina realized that nothing had changed, she decided to take drastic action.

Desperate for some kind of intervention, Krystina contacted the Dr. Phil Show. And so the mother-daughter duo appeared on the program in April 2017. Moreover, prior to their TV debut, an ultrasound of Samantha’s baby was carried out. However, neither mother nor daughter could have anticipated the devastating news they were about to receive.

Throughout the show, Samantha is condemned for her reckless behavior, lack of respect and complete absence of responsibility. Particularly in relation to her illness, her unborn baby and her mother. However, the teen claimed that she has begun to take better care of herself after discovering that she was pregnant. Indeed, she claimed to have quit smoking a month previously. Nevertheless, the pair were about to be dealt a heartbreaking blow.

Furthermore, on the show Samantha claims that her mother is no angel either. Indeed according to her, her mom is a heavy drinker, which is why they would often clash. In fact, on more than one occasion Krystina actually threatened to physically harm her pregnant daughter.

When Samantha was six months pregnant, for example, Krystina threatened to stab her in the stomach if she did not have an abortion. Furthermore, on a separate occasion, she also threatened to push her down the stairs. Both incidents had supposedly taken place after Krystina had been drinking.

And during the Dr. Phil Show, Krystina also made a shocking statement. She said Samantha’s health had deteriorated to such an extent that she did not believe her daughter would survive either the pregnancy or the birth. Furthermore, she told Dr. Phil that no matter what, “I will not raise this child.”

After the situation had been laid bare for the audience, Dr. Travis Stork, of The Doctors, made an appearance in order to deliver the results of Samantha’s ultrasound. And because of Samantha’s disregard for her health, her mom was adamant that the baby’s health would also have suffered.

Before Dr. Stork revealed the effect that Samantha’s behavior had had on her baby, he told Dr. Phil, “There’s really no way to sugar coat what’s at stake here.” And then, with a heavy heart, he began to delve into the details of the ultrasound.

While Samantha and her mom listened tentatively, Dr. Stork explained that the baby showed signs of caudal regression syndrome. He then described the symptoms the baby was showing: its lower spine, for example, had not grown to the length one would normally expect.

On May 10, 2017, Samantha gave birth to a baby girl, Elizabeth AnnMarie. On her Go Fund Me page, grandmother Krystina called the survival of both mother and baby “a miracle.” Sadly, however, Elizabeth, who is now three months old, is plagued with medical problems. And unfortunately the ultrasound predictions proved correct: baby Elizabeth does indeed have caudal regression syndrome.

Additionally, and amongst a host of other health issues, the little girl was born with her stomach and liver on the wrong side of her body. As a result, Krystina has set up her Go Fund Me page in order to help pay for the medical bills. Unfortunately, little Elizabeth has already gone through multiple operations in her short life, and there are many more still to come. However, Krystina remains hopeful and says that her daughter Samantha’s health and attitude has improved significantly since Elizabeth arrived.
