A dad and his young stepdaughter are sitting in the family car in June 2017 when the tot asks him to switch on the radio. It was a simple request, of course – but it was what happened next that left people with their jaws on the floor. Indeed, the ensuing video of the two of them completely stunned the internet.
Cole LaBrant is what can only be described as an internet sensation. He is a 24-year-old social media star from the small Alabama city of Enterprise with an impressive portfolio of viral videos and Vines. With his cheerful personality and endless energy, then, he has managed to gather a big following online.
LaBrant first made a name for himself on the short-form video network Vine, where he used his cheeky personality to create hilarious clips. He also used YouTube as a platform to make a “prom-posal” video that went viral in early 2015. In that video, LaBrant was shown lip syncing Selena Gomez songs in a bid to get the star to agree to go to his prom with him. Sadly, he didn’t achieve his goal of a date with Gomez, but his stunt certainly succeeded in getting his brand out there.
And not only is LaBrant now a huge internet figure, but he also remains a proud Christian, regularly mentioning his faith online. So when LaBrant married his girlfriend, fellow virtual star Savannah Soutas, in July 2017, he wrote on social media, “Today’s the day. I marry my best friend. Lift us up in prayer as we become one. May God be glorified.”
Since then, the newly married couple haven’t stopped making virtual content and have set up the joint YouTube channel Cole&Sav. But it is something LaBrant filmed just before his wedding to the Californian that has caused his fame to skyrocket. Indeed, he made the video and uploaded it to his Facebook page, and before too long the internet exploded.
So it all started when LaBrant decided to make a video featuring himself and Soutas’ daughter from a previous relationship. Little Everleigh is only four years old in the film, which is titled “When the music changes you,” and there is something about the adorable daddy-daughter dynamic in the car-set clip that has taken over the internet.
The video kicks off with the two of them sitting in a stationary car being filmed by a dashboard camera. LaBrant is at the wheel while little Everleigh is sat in a car seat in the back. She says, “Hey Dad, wanna listen to the radio?” He agrees – and presses a button on the car to set in motion one of the funniest videos the internet has ever seen.
Indeed, what happens next is so unexpected that the viewer can’t help but laugh. The music starts, and suddenly the dad and daughter appear in a hilarious array of silly accessories, including bright pink feather boas, headbands and gloves. They dance along to the song enthusiastically, lip syncing the words in a truly hilarious fashion.
Once they’ve performed a few lines of the song, though, the video makes a jump cut. This time the soundtrack is a gangster rap jam, and LaBrant and Everleigh have switched costumes to suit. Both sport funky head bandanas as they mime and make ghetto moves as though the pair have just stepped out of a music video for the song.
This sequence is swiftly followed by a country tune, and the two of them have morphed into cowpokes. They cornily lip sync their way through a few lines of the song in their neckerchiefs and cowboy hats before the video once again jump cuts to a brand new piece of music and accompanying costume change.
So after the short deviation into country territory, the radio starts blasting out the One Direction song “What Makes You Beautiful.” This prompts the daddy ’n’ daughter combination to begin jiggling about enthusiastically in the car while wearing backwards caps and sunglasses.
Next, the video takes the viewer on a trip down Mexico way with the folk song “La Bamba.” Everleigh and LaBrant suddenly appear in sombreros, enthusiastically shaking their maracas along to the beat. Their breakneck-fast take on Carpool Karaoke is still not over, though; there are even more song excerpts to come before the video comes to a hilarious conclusion.
When the music eventually stops, LaBrant and Everleigh are shown in silence looking completely bedraggled and confused. And with her hair all over the place, the girl turns to her stepdad and says, “What just happened?” LaBrant then slowly turns to face the dash cam and says, “I don’t know,” looking completely flabbergasted.
And so concludes one of the cutest videos the internet has ever seen. The clip is only one minute and 20 seconds long, but it’s a short and sharp burst of energy guaranteed to make anyone watching it smile. Following its online release, the likes, shares and comments for the film unsurprisingly began to roll in.
In fact, the clip’s popularity totally snowballed, and it has now been viewed more than 30 million times. With in excess of 470,000 shares and over 30,000 comments, it really is the video of the moment. LaBrant has also commented beneath the film, encouraging people to tag their friends and share it.
He has done that in the hope that he and Everleigh might catch the attention of producers at The Ellen Degeneres Show and be invited by them to share the eponymous star’s stage on TV one day. But there has been no LaBrant appearance on the program… so far. But the buzz around the video certainly hasn’t died down.
Indeed, a deluge of comments have praised LaBrant for his creativity as well as Everleigh for her cuteness. Unfortunately – this is the internet after all – some people have also taken the opportunity to criticize LaBrant. Yes, some people missed the funny side of the video because they were too concerned with Eveleigh’s car seat.
One Facebook user commented, “Her seat isn’t installed correctly… Her seat is really wobbly, moves too much. Secondly her chest clip is too low.” But other users reminded the worried poster that the car is not moving in the video and that there is therefore little need for such a high level of concern.
Still, the issue of the car seat ended up causing a heated discussion online. “Why does the seat belt matter at all if the car isn’t even moving? Like come on. No one can make a cute video without being criticized for something ridiculous,” a commenter vented in response. Meanwhile, another simply wrote, “Shut up and enjoy video.”
The vast majority of the reaction was positive, however. Comments such as “You are the best daddy and she is adorable! I am just giggling with joy” were common, for instance. Perhaps, then, it is only a matter of time before we see LaBrant on mainstream TV programs such as The Ellen Degeneres Show. One thing is for sure, though: we haven’t seen the last of him.
