Back in 2016 Anthony D’Amico and Ashley Petta met and quickly wed on the Lifetime show Married at First Sight. Now, the couple have shared some life-changing news with the world – and when the stars made the big revelation online, fans were thrilled.
Perhaps it’s a surprise that the two Chicago natives are even still together, as they had been strangers when they married on the controversial reality show. Their episodes aired during the fifth season of the series in 2017; at the time of filming, D’Amico was working in sales, while Petta managed a family-run bar and grill.
Married at First Sight itself, meanwhile, has been adapted from a Danish television series called Gift Ved Første Blik. The show sees couples getting set up by relationship experts – although they only meet one another on their wedding days. And after each pair have exchanged their vows, they subsequently go on a honeymoon together.
Then, when the couples return home, they are followed by cameras for eight weeks as they get to know each other. After that, they choose whether they want to remain married or get divorced. Currently, the experts on the show are sociology expert Dr. Pepper Schwartz, relationship and communication guru Rachel DeAlto and marriage counselor and pastor Calvin Roberson.
After D’Amico and Petta had tied the knot, moreover, they both appeared to be happy with their respective spouse. “You are everything that I asked for,” Petta is heard telling D’Amico in a trailer for 2018 spin-off Married at First Sight: Happily Ever After. Her husband adds, meanwhile, “It’s nice to have that instant spark, that passion.” And in the clip Petta also reveals that the two were matched because of their shared values and desire to have a family.
However, when it comes to their future, the couple haven’t agreed on everything. In the trailer, Petta told her husband that she wanted to have children in a year; D’Amico, on the other hand, thought that was moving too quickly. “You’re talking about marriage and the kids in a month of each other,” he says in the footage. “I know she wants to plan, and I get that. But hey, breathe.”
But while the show has been criticized for its unconventional methods, D’Amico had total faith in the Married at First Sight process. “Relationships have been happening like this since way before [the series] was created,” he told E! ahead of season six. “Hell, my grandparents were married through arranged marriage.”
D’Amico and Petta’s relationship has seemingly gone more swimmingly, however, than those of the other two Chicago couples featured on their season: Danielle DeGroot and Cody Knapek, and Sheila Downs and Nate Duhon. At the end of the eight weeks, each pairing were asked if they wished to stay together, and all three couples initially chose to continue with their marriages.
However, in August 2017 DeGroot and Knapek revealed that they were divorcing. Then, three months later, Duhon announced that he and Downs had also got a divorce. But D’Amico and Petta stayed together – and they had some huge news to tell the world on August 28, 2018.
Prior to the airing of Married at First Sight: Happily Ever After – which will be premiering on October 30, 2018 – Petta took to Instagram to reveal what the couple had to share. The spin-off will feature some of the most successful couples from the show as their marriages mature – although Petta and D’Amico’s union had arguably progressed in the most exciting way.
“We’re pregnant!” Petta wrote alongside a photo of the couple holding their sonogram. “I am so excited to finally share this exciting news with everyone. We have always dreamed of having a child, and we are so happy to finally be making our dreams come true together.”
The reality star added that she and D’Amico are both overjoyed to know that they will soon become parents. “We are over the moon and cannot wait to welcome our child into the world,” she shared. “We can’t wait for this next journey in our lives to begin!”
Meanwhile, D’Amico wrote on Instagram on the same day, “I’m gonna be a daddy! @ashleypetta and I are so excited to announce that we’re pregnant! Ashley and I have always wanted to be parents and can’t wait for our little one to arrive. Looking forward to the next chapter of our lives!”
Yet while the couple did not disclose the gender of their future child or the exact due date, they did nevertheless give one small tidbit to the press by explaining in a statement that the baby will arrive sometime “in the new year.” And following the big announcement, fans were delighted for the duo.
“So happy for you two. I am so glad you two made it – [you’re] my favorite couple so far!” one person wrote. Another shared, “OMG, you guys are the cutest! Can’t wait to follow this journey!” And a third commenter added, “I just absolutely LOVE you guys. So cute! So excited for you. You both deserve this! Kids are so fun, and you will be excellent parents! Congrats!”
And on Instagram, Petta also thanked fans for their heartfelt words. “All the love and excitement we are feeling is wonderful!” she wrote in a follow-up post on August 31, 2018. So, while the young couple had experienced some conflict over when to start a family, it’s clear that they are ecstatic to be expecting – judging by their social media messages, at least.
It turns out, in fact, that Petta and D’Amico had eventually decided they would start attempting to conceive after one year of marriage. And, in the end, they announced their pregnancy news three weeks after celebrating their second wedding anniversary – which is also two years since the day they had first met. “Marrying a stranger might have been the craziest but best decision I ever made,” Petta revealed in an Instagram post on their anniversary.
But D’Amico and Petta’s marriage isn’t the only one to have endured after the cameras were turned off. As of October 2018, there are three other pairs from the series who are still very much together. They include Jamie Otis-Hehner and Doug Hehner, and Courtney Hendrix-Carrion and Jason Carrion – both sets of couples from the first season that aired in 2014.
The Hehners were also expecting a baby in 2016, but Otis-Hehner ultimately suffered a miscarriage at 17 weeks. Fortunately, the couple now have a daughter named Henley Grace, who entered the world in August 2017. Shawniece Jackson and Jephte Pierre from season six are also still together and awaiting their first child.
As for D’Amico and Petta? Well, they are now just a few months away from welcoming their baby, with the pregnancy to be documented on Married At First Sight: Happily Ever After. And although the couple seem to have had their ups and downs, they have got through the difficult times together. “It wasn’t always easy, but we made it,” Petta said in the trailer for the show. “And here we are today, with a baby on the way.”
