Debbie McEnroe braved the elements to go and see The Makeover Guy. She was ready to transform her long gray hair into something younger and fresher. And when the extreme results were revealed, they astounded McEnroe and viewers alike.
Christopher Hopkins opened his first hair salon almost 30 years ago. In 2008 he wrote the book Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45. Hopkins has also appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show and his career over the past decade has mostly focused on making people over.
In particular, Hopkins uses his skills to revamp the images of women who are middle-aged and up. As The Makeover Guy, he started YouTube series The Power of Pretty, where he shares clips of his transformations. And the videos have become extremely popular.
Hopkins owns an “appearance studio” in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he offers everything from beauty services to full transformations. He charges from $350 for his image renovations, which include a haircut and makeup application with a lesson. Brow grooming, hair color and silhouette analysis are optional extras, which can cost up to a total of $650.
Customers travel from far and wide for the opportunity to work with the makeover artist. And it seems that for most of his clients, the journey and expenses are well worth it. Last year, Hopkins created a transformation that left people in awe.
McEnroe came all the way from Waterloo, Iowa, to Minneapolis for her appointment with Hopkins. On top of being a 200-mile journey, she had to travel in brutal conditions. McEnroe, who owns Finishing Touch Day Spa, revealed that she had been caught in a blizzard.
“It took me almost five hours to get here yesterday,” she tells Hopkins in a video shared to YouTube on February 26, 2017. “We couldn’t see anything.” McEnroe explains that there had been a “white-out,” but adds that she knows how to operate a backhoe.
The spa owner also reveals there is an extra special reason she wanted to get a makeover. “I just lost 43 pounds,” McEnroe says, adding that she is “just feeling kind of frumpy and ready for some massive change.” She tells Hopkins that she is after a look that’s “dramatic and alluring.”
McEnroe comes into the salon with white hair that is long and lacking in volume. She has also been taking the scissors to her own locks. “With very long, thin and weak hair, she had cut her bangs short leaving me a bit unsure of what I was going to do,” Hopkins shares on YouTube.
Hopkins gets colorist Trish to work on freshening up her white tresses. Trish is shown telling McEnroe that she’s chosen a “bright, ashy blonde with some lighter highlights to kind of match what’s happening naturally.” Hopkins adds on YouTube, “Trish brightened her naturally blonde hair (with gray) with a full color and highlights.”
Once the dye has been applied, Hopkins works on the haircut. The client is seeking something “sassy and fun,” but it is important to Hopkins to create a look that is “easy” to maintain. And McEnroe appears to trust him completely.
“I would like to see something exciting,” she says in the clip. “I’m excited. I’m going to let him do what he wants.” McEnroe adds that she is “feeling outdated, looking tired, tired of looking tired.”
Fortunately, Hopkins comes up with a way to add texture to her naturally straight hair. “I created a stacked and slightly inverted bob with creative layering to balance a small head, removing bulk where it was needed,” he wrote on YouTube. “I clipped the hair and put her under the dryer then used a curling iron to polish the wave.”
To finish, the client gets a makeup application and lesson. “Cheryl did some great coverage makeup that still looks natural (and to all who say you need to wear less foundation as you age, I would like to argue that point),” Hopkins explains. McEnroe is given a base with dark eyeliner, tidy brows and a nude lip color.
After all of that, it is time for the big reveal. McEnroe finally gets to view the results of her much-anticipated makeover. And she is amazed by how different she looks.
Hopkins gives McEnroe a curly blonde bob with a lot of volume and subtle but glamorous makeup. “I love it! It’s awesome,” she exclaims in the video. “The style’s great, color’s great. I had a terrific day.”
McEnroe is seen smiling as she shows off her new look for the camera. And it’s clear she has no regrets about braving a blizzard to get to her image overhaul. “I loved everything. The silhouette, I loved having my hair color, I loved the consultation – everything,” she says.
After her makeover, McEnroe continued to take the advice she received to heart. Many felt her blonde bob made her look years younger than she did when she walked into Hopkins’ salon, and she kept her haircut afterward. And when the transformation was posted online, people were in awe.
The clip has been viewed more than 564,000 times and received hundreds of comments from people who couldn’t believe the difference in McEnroe’s appearance. “Christopher took 25 years off of her! Fantastic makeover!” one YouTube user wrote. Another added, “Wow! I think this might be in the top 3 all time of your before & afters! So talented! She looks amazing!”
Others pointed out that while the makeover made McEnroe look “beautiful,” it also gave her a big confidence boost. “You see that she is [a] pretty woman robbed by the wrong hairstyle right from the get go,” Tartesalee shared. “Loved this, how great must she feel when I am a stranger and feel so excited for her!” And Gladys Addington added, “Her happiness transforms her. You gave her that with the Christopher Hopkins Experience.”
