One Month After This Guy Got His Socks Wet, He Had To Have A Double Amputation

Although spending the night in your car may not be the first option that comes to mind when you think of how to get a good night’s sleep, it wouldn’t necessarily be a dangerous one. But, as it turns out, reddit user Forlurn’s decision to take a nap in his vehicle had life-changing consequences.

Finding yourself stuck outside in freezing temperatures is not an ideal way to spend a night, especially when the surrounding area is covered in snow. And even if the view is a picturesque one, would you decide to stay out in the cold?

Well, Forlurn had to make that decision, and his choice triggered a series of events that would see him left with severe injuries. What’s more, after the incident occurred, the reddit user decided to detail his experiences in a post on the site.

And although Forlurn didn’t disclose exactly where he was on that fateful night, he did however reveal the details of how he came to suffer his injuries. As it happens, he had planned to travel to Wisconsin the following day with his boss for his job.

Furthermore, both Forlurn and his boss had accommodation organized once they’d reached Wisconsin. However, Forlurn hadn’t made a decision about where he would stay while he waited for his work colleague the night before their journey.

Rather than find a local motel to spend the night in, though, Forlurn decided upon another option – one that would eventually have a shocking impact on his life. Instead, he chose to save money and bed down in his car.

And, after making this decision, all that Forlurn had to do was settle down and try to sleep as best as he could in his vehicle. After he had spent time in the surrounding snow, though, his shoes were wet, so he decided that it was sensible to remove them.

But while removing the footwear may have seemed like a good precaution against the cold, it wasn’t enough. Even though Forlurn had been wearing his shoes in the snow, they hadn’t managed to stop his socks and feet from also becoming damp.

Still, with Forlurn’s shoes safely stowed away and the car’s heater turned on, you might expect that his socks would soon have dried out. Unfortunately, though, this was not the case. As he was sleeping, Forlurn’s car ran out of gas, and therefore the heating switched off.

But although Forlurn later recalled that he remembered the heating turning off, he explained that he reasoned he could handle the cold until the morning. And while his feet did hurt at this point, that pain eventually stopped, and so he went back to sleep.

“A few hours later, I tried to put my shoes back on and found that my feet were frozen solid,” Forlurn wrote on reddit. “My hands were very painful now and were beginning to lose most of their mobility and sensation to touch.”

And unbeknownst to Forlurn, the unpleasant sensation that he was experiencing was frostbite. According to WebMD, this condition is defined as “the freezing of body tissue that results when the blood vessels contract, reducing blood flow and oxygen to the affected body parts.”

Symptoms typically experienced by frostbite sufferers, meanwhile, include losing feeling in the affected areas and changes in skin color. In addition, the condition is most likely to affect extremities such as the feet.

Upon realizing his plight, though, Forlurn did have the common sense to then call an ambulance. And once he reached the hospital, his feet began to thaw out – but all that the doctors could do was wait and hope that the afflicted areas could be saved.

The reddit user described the agony that he experienced at this point as unbearable. Unfortunately, despite Forlurn still being able to feel pain in his feet, doctors made the decision to carry out a double amputation at his shins on January 26, 2018.

Amazingly, though, Forlurn has remained positive in spite of his ordeal. “I’m looking forward to cutting these damn things off, as massive nerve damage is a sh**ty thing to be stuck with,” he wrote. “I am also excited to start working with prosthetics. Once I get comfortable… there will be very little I won’t be able to do.”

And after his original post, Forlurn received support from fellow reddit users. One commenter wrote, “I’m sorry to hear that. That really sucks, man. I wish you the best of luck. Glad to hear your hands were able to be saved.”

Forlurn has also claimed that prior to the operation, he was lazy and unmotivated. As a result, he urged readers not to feel sorry for him. Instead, he stated that he was sharing his story in a bid to warn others of the dangers of frostbite. And judging by some of the responses to his post, he seems to have succeeded in that mission.

Lisalisa07 commented, for instance, “A huge thank you for posting the progressive pictures. I have only ever seen the final pictures of frostbite and always thought it immediately turned black. Seeing the progression makes it even scarier!”

Then, on February 20, 2018, Forlurn made the brave decision to upload an image of himself. In fact, it was apparently the first full-body photo that he had taken since the operation. He captioned it, “I find it pretty surreal to know that it’s me. I wanted to share.” And it seems that Forlurn hopes to continue spreading the word about his ordeal by taking the time to respond to comments left on his posts, too.
