This Tattoo Artist Popped The Question To His Girlfriend In The Most Perilous Way Possible

Crazy marriage proposals are all the rage these days. Whether it’s a stunt that’s taken months of preparation or one that involves dozens of people, there’s always someone out there raising the bar for everyone else. One guy, however, decided to take things a step further, in what must surely be the boldest and riskiest marriage proposal ever undertaken. And it only involved himself and his girlfriend…

Vinny Capaldo-Smith is a tattoo artist based in Denver, Colorado, where he works for Tribe Tattoo. He’d been dating his girlfriend Brooke Wodark for a little over a year and a half, and in June 2017 he popped the question in the ultimate way.

Even though they’ve only been dating for 18 months, the couple have actually known each other for five years. What’s more, they met through Capaldo-Smith’s work. Yes, he was her tattoo artist – a fact that makes his means of proposal all the more special.

Indeed, the proposal plan that Capaldo-Smith hatched involved something which he’s clearly passionate about: his body art. His idea was as perilous as it was confident, though, and if it backfired, it would be a gamble that he could regret for the rest of his life.

Capaldo-Smith began by asking his girlfriend to give him a tattoo of a heart just above his ankle. Wodark, however, had never given anybody a tattoo before, so she was understandably nervous about the whole affair. After all, it was a potentially permanent mistake to make if anything were to go wrong.

Indeed, when the day came for Wodark to tattoo her boyfriend, she was sweating just getting the equipment ready. But even then she couldn’t have predicted what was about to go down, and it was certainly far crazier than she could have expected.

After Wodark had pulled on her gloves and braced herself for the monumental task ahead, her boyfriend revealed that he had a surprise in store. Rolling up the leg on his shorts, Capaldo-Smith unveiled a tattoo on his thigh that was more than a little familiar to Wodark. Yes, there, tattooed on his leg, was a drawing that she’d sketched one night at the dinner table. But that wasn’t all.

Indeed, below the sketch were four simple words etched onto Capaldo-Smith’s skin: “Will you marry me?” And underneath the text were two checkboxes for his girlfriend’s response – either yes, or no. Wodark no doubt couldn’t believe what she was seeing. In fact, she was in complete shock as Capaldo-Smith then proceeded to pull out an engagement ring.

Fortunately for Capaldo-Smith the answer was a firm “yes.” Wodark’s reply, though, was backed up by a slightly less certain tattoo, as she initially put a somewhat shaky mark into the relevant checkbox. “It looks like I really messed up,” she told 9NEWS. “Luckily I retouched it and got a clean red ‘x.’”

While the proposal may have been risky, it had certainly been meticulously planned. Indeed, at celebrations to mark Wodark’s parents’ 25th wedding anniversary, Capaldo-Smith had asked the father of his fiancée-to-be for permission to marry his daughter. And after that went without a hitch, Wodark’s mom apparently began counting down the days to the big event.

Of course, Capaldo-Smith will have been mightily relieved that Wodark said yes. After all, if his new fiancée had said no, he may well have had a very permanent memory of that rejection etched onto his skin.

It’s no surprise, then, that he didn’t do it without some prior idea of what her response would be. Indeed, as Wodark later told 9NEWS, Capaldo-Smith had a pretty good feeling that his girlfriend would say yes. There were, however, some critics online who challenged his confidence and jokingly wondered what would have happened had the proposal been declined.

So what exactly would the tattoo artist have done if he’d not received the answer he expected? Well, Capaldo-Smith claims that as he was already heavily inked, he would have just laughed it off. We’re not sure he’d have been saying that with such confidence if had she said no, however.

Nevertheless, Wodark’s reaction was absolutely priceless, and no doubt exactly what Capaldo-Smith was hoping for when he planned his bold proposal. “I was in complete shock,” Wodark told 9NEWS. “I cried for like three hours in happiness.”

In the days following their engagement, Wodark uploaded footage of the proposal to YouTube. Of course, this being the internet, the reaction has been inevitably mixed. While some people have shown their dismay at Capaldo-Smith’s daring gambit, many others have sounded their appreciation.

On YouTube, for instance, Casey Fournier wrote, “This is so great, I am happy for you two!” Meanwhile, a user by the name of MyAbridged agreed, “These two are happy with themselves and happy with their relationship, this is sweet.”

Meanwhile on Instagram, people from all over the world offered their congratulations. One user wrote, “That’s awesome! Congrats to y’all from New Orleans!” Another said, “Awe! Cutest proposal ever! Congratulations!”

Capaldo-Smith’s stunt even managed to sway the views of those who would normally have poured scorn on similar body art. “I don’t look favorably upon relationship tattoos,” wrote Maya Holt on YouTube. “But I got to admit, this is super cute.”

But no matter what anyone thinks of the couple’s unique tattoo, Wodark assured 9NEWS that it won’t be the last one that they both contribute to. And, of course, they now have their whole lives ahead of them to get as many as they like.

The couple haven’t set a firm date for their nuptials yet, but are believed to be planning to marry in fall 2018. At the moment, we’re sure Capaldo-Smith is just counting himself lucky that Wodark said yes. After all, this was a marriage proposal they both will never forget.
