Lifting heavy goods can be difficult at the best of times, especially when you are a senior citizen. So one elderly couple in Iowa were faced with a dilemma when they went to a warehouse store to buy in bulk. Consequently, the shoppers bent the rules a little bit to make things easier for themselves. However, unfortunately for them, there was a law-abiding citizen watching who was prepared to make a big thing of their tiny infringement.
On October 12, 2017, 40-something mom of three Christina Kreinbring was simply going about her daily business when she came across a scene that totally shocked her. It happened in the parking lot of her local Sam’s Club in Davenport, IA. Sam’s is a chain store that specializes in bulk groceries, items for the home and electrical goods.
The sight she was confronted with that day upset Kreinbring so much that she knew she had to act. In the end, all she could really do was add her two cents to what was going on. However, the quick-thinking Kreinbring got her smartphone out and began filming the situation as it unfolded in front of her. Later that day, she shared the video on social media and it caused outrage online.
It all started when an elderly man and woman came out of the Sam’s Club outlet. They had moved their car very close to the front doors of the store so that they wouldn’t have to carry their hefty purchases too far. However, it turned out that the couple had parked up in the area designated for emergency vehicles.
And there was one person who took great exception to the elderly shoppers’ temporary choice of parking spot. Kreinbring’s video shows an overweight man dressed in a baggy T-shirt, baseball hat and voluminous knee shorts at the door of the store. And he is clearly very unhappy with the elderly couple’s transgression.
At the start of the video, Kreinbring can be heard asking the man what it is exactly that he has taken issue with. This prompts an angry response from the clearly agitated stranger. He starts to rant about how the elderly couple are “breaking the law” by parking where they had.
Following the man’s outburst, Kreinbring comes back at him with a suggestion. “Why don’t you help them upload?” she asks the concerned citizen. The irate individual takes huge offense at her proposal. He responds by shouting incredulously, “Why would I help them break the law?”
The man is clearly incredibly annoyed that the senior shoppers had parked in an inappropriate spot. But Kreinbring was disgusted by the disproportionate way he was behaving towards them. As she films, Kreinbring informs the unnecessarily angry man about what she plans to do with the results. She tells him, “I can’t wait to post this video of you, harassing this nice couple as they try to load their car.”
“Go ahead!” the belligerent stranger shouts, giving verbal permission for Kreinbring to use his image. Meanwhile, the elderly pair, who only wanted to load their car more easily, are filmed pushing trollies back to the store. “Get a life!” an exasperated Kreinbring urges the man, as she continues to film him looming near the couple who keep a dignified silence.
The one-man protest action continues with his repeated assertions that the senior citizens are breaking the law, but Kreinbring isn’t having any of it. She teases the man by asking, “What are you, a cop?” to which he angrily replies with a terse “No!” His response makes Kreinbring laugh derisively.
“Then go about your business!” she pleads with the hugely annoyed stranger, who is seemingly unable to leave the elderly couple alone. Kreinbring reminds the over-officious individual that it is the job of the police – and the police only – to enforce the law of the land.
While the heated exchange of words is going on between Kreinbring and the cranky man, the senior citizens are filmed quietly going about their business. We can see that it is obvious they don’t want to get involved in the unpleasantness. Clearly they wish to make a swift exit, and escape the trouble they have inadvertently caused.
As the old man and woman are about to leave, we hear Kreinbring shout after them. Before they take the chance to drive away, she wants to talk to them. She knocks on the driver-side window, and films the elderly gentleman winding it down to hear what she has to say.
It turns out that Kreinbring has noticed something that perhaps the bully in the baseball hat has not. There is a Purple Heart insignia displayed on the couple’s car, signifying a connection to the U.S. military. Kreinbring wants to comment on it. “Sir, I’d like to thank you for your service,” she tells the elderly driver.
The Purple Heart medal is awarded to serving members of the U.S. armed forces who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy. They are given posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in conflict or die of wounds received in action. The medal is specifically a combat decoration.
In the video clip, Kreinbring continues to talk as she shakes the man’s hand through the open window. “Thank you so much for the freedoms that we enjoy,” she says, adding, “And [so that] a**holes like that [can] harass you.” We see the elderly man smile at this last part as the couple pull away in their car. Kreinbring stopped filming at this point, but the story didn’t end there, according to a Facebook post she made later that day.
Alongside her upload of the video, Kreinbring posted her take on the altercation and its conclusion. Apparently the aggressive stranger asked Kreinbring, “Are you done now?” To which she replied, “Done being nice and kind? Never.” And those are exactly the kind of qualities Kreinbring wanted to encourage in everyone who viewed her video. “Let’s never stop being nice and kind,” she wrote online.
In her Facebook post, an exasperated Kreinbring described feeling that the world had turned totally upside down when she witnessed the man be so needlessly mean to the elderly couple. And plenty of people on the social media site got in line to agree with her. “I’m glad you said something! What a piece of trash that guy is! Wow! People never cease to amaze me,” one commenter wrote. Another Facebook user who was outraged by the man’s behavior described him as a “disrespectful jerk,” and they told Kreinbring, “We need more people like you in this world.”
At the end of Kreinbring’s post detailing the incident, she had something sassy to say in conclusion. “I don’t know who this guy is but I hope his momma sees this and sits him down for a good talking to,” she wrote. Then she added a total burn, saying, “I’m sure she’ll need not look any further than her basement to find him.”
The post quickly snowballed and, in a little more than a month, Kreinbring’s film was viewed almost 130,000 times. Not only that, but the video was shared widely and the comments of support rolled in. Let’s hope that Kreinbring’s message inspires more people to be a lot kinder to one another, even if some rules may be bent a little.
