Nicole Kidman And Keith Urban’s $4 Million Farmhouse Is Out Of This World

Most of us would do anything to live in this massive estate in New South Wales, Australia. The luxury property sits on 111 acres of land and has six bedrooms, a library and even a billiard room. Yet its owners don’t even live here full time! Mind you, if you’re Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, you’re probably in a position to keep a holiday home like this.

The celebrity couple have actually amassed an array of properties since they first met in 2005. Though at that time, circumstances were quite different. Kidman was emerging from her high-profile divorce from Tom Cruise, but she was immediately taken with Urban. As the star recalled to Ellen DeGeneres in 2017, “I remember thinking, I had such a crush on him, and he wasn’t interested in me.”

It would seem that Kidman was wrong about that, as the pair soon started getting to know each other. Urban has claimed that they “clicked” right away, though Kidman has publicly stated that he was a little apprehensive in those early days. In any case, things worked out and the couple were ready to get married by 2006.

In June that year Kidman and Urban wed at a service in Australia. And as you’d expect, there were plenty of fellow A-listers in attendance. Some of the biggest names on the guest list were Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Russell Crowe and director Baz Luhrmann. Apparently, Urban, Jackman and Neil Finn of the band Crowded House even played a few songs for everyone.

Now that Kidman and Urban were married, the pair set about building their real estate empire. And they built up quite the collection! The pair picked up houses all over the world, and they were all extremely luxurious. But of them all, it the Bunya Hill property was arguably the most impressive.

Kidman was still really quite young when she first climbed onto the property ladder. The actress reportedly bought her first place back in 1987 – purchasing a small apartment in a suburb just outside of Sydney. The Domain website notes that she coughed up $81,000 for the place without having to take out a mortgage.

Buying a house outright is an impressive achievement for someone so young, but Kidman’s star was beginning to rise at this point. The young star had just starred on a TV series called Vietnam, for which she’d received critical acclaim. And the job had seemingly paid well enough for her to buy an apartment without any outside help.

Of course, this was only the beginning of Kidman’s life in the public spotlight. Just a few years later her profile blew up when she tied the knot with Tom Cruise. By 1995 the A-list couple were themselves looking to buy and ultimately ended up with a place worth $4.2 million in a Sydney suburb called Darling Point, according to Domain. Apparently, they then spent even more than that on adding an extension!

As we know now, Cruise and Kidman weren’t to be and they split up in 2001. Despite all the cash which had been put into their home, now they wouldn’t be living there together. But money probably wasn’t much of an issue for the Hollywood stars – plus the property reportedly sold for $12 million eight years later anyway.

By the time she and Urban had married in 2006, Kidman’s property holdings were already pretty significant. But once they were together, the celebrity pair ended up buying even more luxury properties around the world. First things first, though, Domain notes that she sold one of her own personal penthouses for well over $4 million.

Urban and Kidman had a good amount of money between them, and the couple set about building their property portfolio. In 2009 they shelled out $4.16 million for a penthouse in Sydney, according to Business Insider. For that huge sum, they ended up with an apartment spanning over 4,500 square feet of space and overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

A few years later, the couple managed to buy another apartment worth millions of dollars in the same building. This meant that they could join the two places together – creating one massive penthouse. And on top of everything else, Kidman and Urban also purchased a third apartment on another floor.

The specific details about this apartment on the lower floor are a little hazy. According to Domain, Kidman and Urban turned the place into a gym for themselves. On the other hand, other accounts claim that the pair turned it into an office. Perhaps it’s a combination of the two?

Maybe the home office theory is more likely, as Business Insider reports that the building itself contains a gym of its own. This apparently comes with a swimming pool and sauna, so a personal gym may have been unnecessary for Kidman and Urban. Then again, their houses do illustrate a tendency towards excess.

Yet this massive renovated penthouse in Sydney isn’t even the couple’s full-time residence! Kidman and Urban normally live in Nashville, Tennessee, with their kids. Predictably, it’s in an elaborate mansion with seven bedrooms – complete with a swimming pool and tennis court.

Kidman and Urban bought their Nashville house in 2008 – the very same year they invested in a Beverly Hills property. This one was worth even more than their actual home residence and came equipped with five bedrooms. And as you’d expect, the property boasted a swimming pool, too.

In 2010 Business Insider notes that Kidman and Urban shelled out a massive $10 million for a three-bed apartment in Manhattan. Situated in the West Village, the place has a spectacular living area with incredibly high ceilings. There’s apparently 23 feet between the ground and the ceiling, with massive windows allowing lots of light to flow inside.

But the best feature of this Manhattan condo isn’t necessarily the luxurious living room and its tall ceiling. That’s because the building it sits in has what can only be described as a “car elevator.” This is basically a lift that’s capable of hauling an automobile from street level all the way up to the apartments!

Clearly, Kidman and Urban own some ostentatious and lavish properties across Australia and the United States. But we haven’t even taken a proper look at the best one yet, as that honor probably goes to Bunya Hill. This place in New South Wales’ Southern Highlands region is pretty much the height of luxury.

In 2008 Kidman starred alongside Hugh Jackman in Australia, which sees a rich English character inherit an enormous Australian ranch. The film is set during World War II, and the country’s landscape plays a central role. It’s not a huge stretch to be reminded of the movie when thinking about the Bunya Hill house that Kidman owns in real life.

Aside from the scale of the Australian property that calls to mind the ranch in the movie, even the WWII connection is relevant to Bunya Hill. That’s because in 1942 the property was used to shelter English women and children who had fled Hong Kong prior to the Japanese invasion a year earlier. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, around 60 women and their kids stayed there.

Nowadays, the area in which Bunya Hill sits is notably sought-after by the rich and famous. While it’s not too far from Sydney, Sutton Forest is still far quieter and calmer than the city. That has evidently made it a top choice for celebs looking to catch a break, with several prominent figures besides Kidman and Urban also setting up there.

It’s not that difficult to see why the area is so popular. After all, Sutton Forest sits in a part of Australia that’s defined by roving, green hills, though sadly the community isn’t directly on the coast. But the sea is only around an hour’s drive away if you fancy a dip.

Of all the houses in Sutton Forest, though, Kidman and Urban arguably have the best. As per the website Real Estate, the Bunya Hill estate encompasses roughly 111 acres of land, while the building itself is designed in the Georgian style. But after shelling out $6.5 million for the place, the best is to be expected.

The house is grandiose to the max, which isn’t a surprise when you learn who once lived there. In the late 19th century it was reportedly the home of one Lord Augustus Loftus. This Englishman had been the leader of New South Wales at that time, and Bunya Hill reflected his status.

Roughly half a century after Loftus’ time, the Factor family took ownership of Bunya Hill. The place was called Shrublands back then, and they occupied it for six years from 1945. As with the last owner of the house, the Factors had their own claim to prominence – though for quite a different reason.

The Factor family had quite a famous member – a man named Max. As many people may know, Max Factor was one of Hollywood’s greatest make-up artists. He worked with numerous stars in his day and also set up the Max Factor brand of cosmetics. There’s no indication that he lived in Bunya Hill himself, but it’s surely a connection that Hollywood star Kidman must have been interested in.

Of course, Bunya Hill’s history is one draw, but the sheer level of space is quite another. The property has some 111 acres of land at the owners’ disposal, according to Real Estate. This is enough room for a farm and some spacey gardens. Kidman must have found it all difficult to resist!

After all, the farm aesthetic seems to appeal directly to Kidman’s sensibility. When the actress was working on Australia, she spoke to Entertainment Tonight and remarked, “There’s something fantastic about leading 1,500 head of cattle down a big country road.” At Bunya Hill, Kidman actually has the space to do this herself!

In 2015 Vogue actually visited Kidman at Bunya Hill for a video segment called “73 Questions.” At one stage, the interviewer asks Kidman what the coolest feature of her vast home is. And without any hesitation, the star replies, “My six alpacas.” Clearly, then, she’s very much a farming sort of person.

Over the years, Kidman has also spoken publicly about how much she enjoys gardening and growing vegetables. It’s clear to see, then, why Bunya Hill would’ve been so appealing to her when she and her husband were looking for a new place. All those acres of land are surely a gardener’s dream!

Speaking to Vogue several years before the “73 Questions” feature was filmed, Kidman explained how she developed her love for garden work. The actress said, “My mom’s always gardened. My sister gardens. And I’ve now conformed to the Kidman women’s hobby of gardening.” As a matter of interest, the star also grows veg at her and Urban’s Nashville home, too.

In addition to the main property on the Bunya Hill estate, Urban and Kidman also have a little cottage on their land. This thing stands on its own just away from the main house, and it’s where they send guests to sleep. But even though it’s not a direct part of their home, it’s nonetheless well equipped and beautifully decorated.

Along with the cottage, the estate boasts a tennis court and swimming pool, which is to be expected from Kidman and Urban. There’s also a music studio in the house – handy for when the latter needs to record his music. And lest Kidman be jealous that Urban has a room catered to his profession, there’s also a theater!

The house itself was constructed back in 1878, according to Insider. Presumably a huge amount of renovations have been made since that time, but the place has still managed to retain much of its old character. The Georgian-style property has been modernized but also bears the signs of its long history.

In the “73 Questions” video for Vogue, Kidman brings her interviewer into the property’s billiard room. Here, she makes the audacious claim that her pool skills have led to the star being nicknamed “Pool Shark.” If Kidman is to be believed, then, she presumably spends a lot of time in here.

Right across from the billiard room is another impressive space that many people could only dream of having inside their own home. It’s a library, complete with shelves holding books from the ground all the way up to the ceiling. The space looks like a relaxing place to unwind and get stuck into a novel, and presumably it offers Kidman a good place to read film scripts, too.

Bunya Hill’s living room, meanwhile, has a tasteful fireplace and even a grand piano in the corner. The room is quite a bit brighter than other parts of the property and is decorated in creams and whites. Plus, there’s plenty of natural light that floods through the window.

Connected to the living room is the kitchen, which itself leads to a dining area. Here, a big wooden table sits at the center and offers plenty of space for guests to have a meal. The corner of the room, though, is taken up by a playset – presumably to the delight of Kidman and Urban’s children.

Bunya Hill is full of incredible luxuries and comforts, so it’s crazy to think that Kidman, Urban and their kids don’t live there full-time. But as holiday homes go, there are few better. There’s everything you could want in a property there, plus the surrounding countryside is dreamlike. As Kidman herself mentions in the Vogue clip, it’s all about “the simplicity, the air, the peace.”
