Alec Baldwin Showed Off His Dramatic Weight Loss – But His Motivation Came From A Startling Source

An Oscar-nominated movie star, the eldest of an acting dynasty and perhaps the most famous Donald Trump impersonator in the world. Alec Baldwin has become renowned for many things during his lengthy career in Hollywood. And ever since his marriage to his second wife, Hilaria, he’s also turned into an unlikely poster boy for potentially life-saving weight loss.

Alec first began altering his diet in 2012 when he was told he had pre-diabetes. In Hilaria’s book The Living Clearly Method, penned three years later, she admitted, “This was an alarming wake-up call that rocked him to the core.” And the yoga instructor subsequently made it her mission to help him stave off the devastating condition.

Apparently, Hilaria’s advice proved to be invaluable. And as Alec showed off during a memorably revealing appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2019, he’s continued to follow it. So, here’s a look at the 30 Rock star’s health struggles and the relationship that saw him overcome them.

Best known for his roles in Beetlejuice, The Hunt for Red October and 30 Rock, Alec first bumped into yoga instructor Hilaria entirely by chance in 2011. In fact, their so-called meet-cute was like something out of a Hollywood rom-com. And the actor was more than happy to explain what happened in a 2019 Instagram post celebrating their eight-year anniversary.

Image: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic/Getty Images

Alec wrote, “Eight years ago, I wandered into Pure Food and Wine on Irving Place, on an unseasonably warm February evening. My friend, and I sat down (outside!) and as I turned to my left I saw a woman who would change my life. Entirely. Eight years today. Thanks for all you’ve given me. You are a gift.”

And in an interview with the New York Times in 2012, Hilaria revealed her side of the story about how the pair first started talking to each other. The yoga instructor recalled, “I was standing near the door with my friends when he walked up and took my hand and said, ‘I must know you.’” Judging by his pick-up line, then, Alec appears to be just as smooth off screen as he is on it.

After Hilaria asked for confirmation that it was her he was talking to, Alec then handed over his card. However, while the actor may have acted fast during their initial encounter, he seemed keen to take things much slower when they actually began dating. So slow, in fact, that Hilaria began to wonder whether he was interested in her romantically at all.

Speaking to Beach magazine in 2013, Hilaria revealed that Alec took six weeks before he even attempted to kiss her. She said, “We’d have the most romantic dinner date, and afterward he’d drop me off at my house and shake my hand. My girlfriends would call me and say, ‘Anything yet?’ and I’d say, ‘Nope, nope, nope.’ Then they’d say, ‘Maybe he just wants to be friends.’”

Of course, it turned out that Alec was merely being the perfect gentleman. And following their slightly uncertain start, the pair went full steam ahead. Just five months after their first meeting, you see, Hilaria and Alec decided to move in together. And soon after, there was the sound of both wedding bells and the pitter-patter of tiny feet.

What’s more, Hilaria told Beach magazine that she never once saw their 26-year age gap as an issue. She said, “I didn’t really think too much of it because we’re so different. Everyone has commented on our age difference, and it is big. And I’m not someone who watches TV. So he’s somebody completely out of my world – not someone I’d necessarily think of.”

Hilaria and Alec said “I do” in a ceremony at New York’s Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in the summer of 2012. But this wasn’t the first time that the actor had walked down the aisle. He had previously been married for nine years to fellow Hollywood star Kim Basinger, you see.

In a pre-wedding chat with the New York Times, however, Alec admitted that following his split with Kim, he wasn’t certain that marriage was for him. He said, “I’ve dated a lot of people since my divorce and have thought a lot about what I wanted and what I wanted to do. I thought about it too much, I suppose. I wasn’t really ready to take that chance and to act until I met Hilaria.”

Alec and Hilaria’s whirlwind relationship continued to flourish when the yoga instructor soon fell pregnant with their first child. Carmen Gabriela Baldwin was born in August 2013, and she was followed two years later by brother Rafael Thomas. Leonardo Ángel Charles arrived in 2016, and two years later, their family unit grew yet again with the birth of Romeo Alejandro David.

Hilaria was also keen to point out during an interview with Mom.me that Alec is very much a hands-on father. She remarked, “Everybody says, ‘Oh yeah, sure. I’m going to be with you, and I’m going to change diapers and do all these things.’ And you always worry that at 2:00 a.m., you’re going to be alone with your child and your husband’s going to be snoring… But no, [Alec’s] really great.”

Of course, Alec has had plenty of parental experience, having already raised daughter Ireland with his first wife, Kim. Thankfully, though, Hilaria also has a strong connection with her stepdaughter, even if it has been tricky at times. In an Instagram post she wrote, “Having a stepchild is a delicate matter. Especially one who is grown. I think my relationship with her has been so successful because I never tried to step in as her mommy.”

Hilaria also explained why she doesn’t always reference Ireland when discussing her own offspring. She added, “I did not birth her, and I never want to disrespect the fact that she has a wonderful mother. But this will never take away from how much I love her, need her in my life and think that she is one of the best things that has ever happened to me.”

Speaking to Elle Décor magazine in 2016, Alec revealed that he and Hilaria differ when it comes to how they bring up their children. He said, “It’s a generational thing. I’m a lot older, and when I grew up there was none of this bargaining and negotiating you do with kids now. Making them understand.”

“My father was like, ‘Oh, I’ll make you understand!’” added Alec. “My mother used to hit us with a curtain rod, you know, people used to hit their kids with kitchen utensils. But [Hilaria] is the best mommy; she respects them, she honors them.” And Alec seemingly has no problem with Hilaria positioning herself as the alpha of the family, either.

Hilaria and Alec have every intention of adding to their brood, too. “They’re my favorite things in the world so why not?” Hilaria told People magazine in 2019 – in reference to her four kids. And the yoga instructor has already shown that she has no trouble when it comes to losing weight after giving birth.

Incredibly, just ten weeks after welcoming her second child, Rafael, into the world, Hilaria took to Instagram to reveal that she’d lost no less than 18 pounds. In a post, she wrote, “I’ve come to a point in my life where I’m not trying to be skinny. I’m just trying to be healthy, and I’ve found that if I don’t really stress about it, the weight kind of just comes off.”

Hilaria was also keen to share images of her ever-changing body during and after the pregnancy of her fourth child. She once wrote on Instagram, “I share my journey and posts here because I believe so strongly that smart exercise, good eating, and a calm mind equals [a] healthy body. And I want you to experience it too because life is so worth living to its max… and you are so worth it.”

In another post, she wrote, “I’m fit before pregnancy, I stay as fit as I can during pregnancy, and that I think has allowed me to have pretty great labors, deliveries and recovery. This time was hard because I had pneumonia during my labor and delivery, so I was really sick. It wasn’t as fast as the other times, but I made a comeback.”

What’s more, Alec’s figure has also been an issue in the Baldwin household ever since he was diagnosed with pre-diabetes in 2012. After discovering the news, the star went on a major health kick to help beat the disease – losing an impressive 30 pounds in just four months by completely cutting out sugar. And, unsurprisingly, Hilaria was with him every step of the way.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, Alec revealed that Hilaria had been a key motivating factor when it came to his weight loss. And the star had even taken up spin and Pilates classes in a bid to get healthier. However, despite having a yoga instructor for a partner, he admitted that he hadn’t carried out as many downward dogs as he’d hoped.

In 2016 Hilaria penned a book about her healthy lifestyle, and it was called The Living Clearly Method. Alongside various tips, the yoga instructor discussed her husband’s health problems and how out of shape he was when they first met. Describing Alec’s condition, you see, Hilaria wrote, “His cup was close to the brim.”

“His cup was so full that his body couldn’t metabolize even a bite or two of sugar without causing insulin disruption, and this was leading him dangerously close to a chronic disease,” Hilaria continued. That chronic disease was, of course, diabetes, which reportedly affects around 425 million people across the globe.

For her part, Hilaria made it her mission to help Alec achieve a more balanced diet. However, not wanting to go in all guns blazing so early on in their relationship, the yoga instructor initially did her research in quiet. And every time that Alec ate something that was high in sugars and carbs, Hilaria made a mental note of it.

“After years of eating out, eating late, and eating too much, he’d fallen into some bad habits without realizing it,” Hilaria wrote in her book. “His sugar intake was far too high, not just due to sweet foods and white carbs, but to pasta, sauces with hidden sugars and snacks. I quietly watched what he ate, only mentally jotting down my secret wish list of what I’d tell him if he asked.”

Hilaria was then able to put all her mental notes to good use following a concerning doctor’s appointment. There, Alec was informed that his blood sugar levels were pre-diabetic and was advised to alter what he ate immediately. Hilaria revealed, “This was an alarming wake-up call that rocked him to the core.”

Wisely, Alec acted upon this advice from the offset. He no longer ate foods such as bread and pasta and even cut out his favorite: Chinese sweet and sour sauce. Hilaria wrote, “This was a moment for drastically putting order where disorder had taken over; his body chemistry couldn’t rebalance until the aggravating foods and drinks were removed.”

Hilaria also helped to motivate Alec by sticking to the same weight loss and exercise routines herself. She continued in her book, “This episode completely changed his relationship to eating. By hitting a crisis point, he gained a new perspective on some of the unhelpful habits that became his normal without realizing it.”

It isn’t just regular gym sessions that the pair have enjoyed together, either. In a 2016 interview with The Cut, Hilaria revealed that she and Alec have also attended a New York fitness company named Physique 57 where they tried barre. This is a form of exercise featuring routines heavily inspired by ballet.

Hilaria, it seems, appreciated Alec’s efforts. She told The Cut, “I hated barre the first three times, but now I’m obsessed. I was like, ‘This is where all the ladies are! This is where everyone’s in spandex! Let’s go, honey!’ It’s not a male-friendly workout necessarily. It was very sweet that he came with me. We’ve tried acroyoga; we’ve tried everything.”

And in October 2019 Alec appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he opened up about his return to Saturday Night Live and his much-loved impersonation of Donald Trump. But it was his newly-slim figure rather than his mimicry skills that ended up creating the headlines. Alec, you see, certainly wasn’t shy about showing off his transformation.

“You want to see how much weight I’ve lost,” Alec asked the slightly bewildered host. “Ready? My pants don’t even fit anymore.” Much to both Jimmy and the studio audience’s shock, the star then dropped his pants. And the host had some kind words for Alec. “You look fantastic,” he said, while also desperately attempting to cover him up.

Alec, you see, was actually on the late night talk show to discuss the movie Motherless Brooklyn – a neo-noir directed, penned and co-produced by Ed Norton. The actor told Jimmy, “It really, really is a great drama. And Edward, as a director, he did a great job directing. He’s a very smart guy.”

And Alec was no doubt on cloud nine at the time following the personal news that he and his wife had just shared. Indeed, having previously expressed their desire to add to their family unit, in September 2019 the Baldwins announced with glee that they were expecting their fifth child. A joyful Hilaria wrote in an Instagram post, “It is still very early… but we have learned that there is a little person inside of me.”

Hilaria continued, “The sound of this strong heart makes me so happy – especially because of the loss we experienced in the spring.” Indeed, the yoga instructor had tragically suffered a miscarriage earlier on in the year. She added, “We want to share this news as we are excited and don’t want to hide the pregnancy.”

A few weeks after spreading the news of their forthcoming new arrival, the pair roped in their four kids to help reveal the baby’s gender to the world. Carmen, Rafael, Leonardo and Romeo were all given a sheet-covered doll to unwrap which would either be dressed in blue or pink. And Carmen was the first to discover that she would be getting a little sister.

The young girl was no doubt delighted with this news. For Hilaria had previously told PopSugar how desperate Carmen was to have another girl in the family. She said, “It has now been a mission to give Carmen a sister. She loves Ireland, but she wants a baby sister. Basically, my mission is I’m going to keep having kids until it’s a girl!”

But Baldwin is far from the only celebrity to have shed a few pounds – and raised some eyebrows as a result. For example, songstress Céline Dion found herself the victim of trolling and body-shaming after showing off a trimmed figure. And she wasn’t about to let the matter lie, either. In fact, the singer had an epic response for her critics.

Even though Dion is a multi-million-selling pop icon, occasionally people have chosen to focus more on her body than on her considerable professional accomplishments. In 2019, for instance, fans of the “My Heart Will Go On” songstress took to her Instagram page to comment on photos of the star appearing rather thin. But while some of these remarks may have been well intentioned, Dion wasn’t up for having her looks reviewed. And she would go on to tell the world the real reason for her alarming weight loss, too.

In fact, it could be said that Dion was subject to “body-shaming.” And as you may know, this phrase is often used when a person is seemingly criticized for their frame – sometimes because they’re perceived to be either too large or too slender. Yet while such observations may ostensibly be made out of concern, body-shaming can also turn into outright bullying.

And Dion has been through a lot in her life, including medical problems that have required surgery. Unsurprisingly, then, she wasn’t happy to see people inappropriately talking about her weight and the perceived state of her health – and this led the star to deliver an epic clapback to her critics.

That said, Dion is aware of the importance of looks in show business. The singer started her musical career when still just a teenager, after which she went on to become popular in her native Canada. She received awards for her talent, too, and even won the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest with her performance of “Ne partez pas sans moi.” But when Dion decided to try and make it as an international star, her manager René Angélil decided that she would have to change her image first.

So, young Dion spent a year and a half transforming herself – including getting her teeth straightened. Magazines in her native Quebec had reportedly been outright cruel about this aspect of her appearance; the star had even been given the unkind nickname of “Canine Dion.”

Dion had surgery on her mouth, however, as well as a haircut and a change in her personal style. Since she spoke no English, she had to learn the language, too. Then once the 18 months were up, she emerged fully prepared to be a superstar. And Dion’s first album in English, 1990’s Unison, received good reviews.

Then, a year later, Dion joined forces with soul star Peabo Bryson to sing the title song of Disney’s hit movie Beauty and the Beast. That track was a hit that ended up catapulting the Canadian to worldwide fame. The self-titled album that followed also sold exceptionally well, going double platinum in the U.S. And in 1994 Dion progressed in her personal life, too, when she wed Angélil in a high-profile ceremony.

A few years later, however, Dion would release arguably the defining song of her career. Famously, the singer performed ballad “My Heart Will Go On” from the soundtrack to the blockbuster movie Titanic, and the track ultimately topped charts all over the globe. “My Heart Will Go On” also won her two Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year.

It was at around this time, moreover, that Dion became recognized for her fashion as well as her hits – not least because she had begun to wear daring dresses and unusual ensembles to red-carpet events. Her most iconic looks of the 1990s included a sheer black outfit that showed off her underwear at the 1993 Grammys and a white blazer worn backwards at the 1999 Oscars.

But, of course, Dion’s main focus was her music, and she went on to put out a whopping 13 albums before the turn of the millennium. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that she decided to take things a little slower into the new decade. And Dion’s personal life was also filled with highs and lows during this period. After watching her husband battle cancer, the star had cause for cheer again when she became a mother in 2001. Her first child, René-Charles Dion Angélil, was born at the beginning of that year.

Image: Kevin Winter/Getty Images

And Dion seemed to adopt a more mature tone after the birth of her son. “Becoming a mother makes you a grown-up,” she told VH1 in 2002. “I approach my whole life differently now.” Still, just because she was a mom, it didn’t mean that she couldn’t keep the risqué fashion looks. In 2003, then, she wore a cut-out gown that showed off her hips to the Billboard Music Awards.

Dion started undergoing more fertility treatment not long afterwards. “I’m approaching 40 years old, and I have to tend to that,” she told People in 2005. “This frozen embryo that is in New York is my child waiting to be brought to life.” Actually, there turned out to be two children; in 2010 Dion gave birth to twins Eddy and Nelson.

And in 2013 the still very famous and successful singer spoke to Woman’s Weekly about her rags-to-riches tale. “I remember passing down clothes from one sibling to another – I’m the youngest child of 14!” she said. “I had to walk to and from school four times a day often in snowstorms that were quite common in my hometown of Charlemagne in Quebec, Canada.”

Image: Marc Piasecki/Getty Images

Dion also made it clear that she had once agonized over her looks. She explained, “Growing up, I used to feel awkward and insecure because I had a problem with my teeth. I remember not feeling my best or looking my best.” She continued, “I felt like a real outsider and didn’t have many friends at school. I just wanted to be at home with my brothers and sisters and my parents because that was my most comfortable zone.”

And the following year, Dion explicitly spoke out against bullying in a video for the Quebec-based charity Fondation Jasmin Roy. Speaking French, she discussed her own experiences of being picked on. “Because I myself was a victim of bullying at school, I can understand the distress that young people go through,” the singer said.

But while Dion continued to excel on record and on stage, her life would change irrevocably in 2016. In January that year, her husband passed away due to complications from cancer. Then, within just 48 hours, the star’s brother Daniel lost his battle with the disease, too.

Nevertheless, at the end of 2016 Dion revealed that she was trying to survive as best she knew how. “I cannot just live on like, ‘I lost my husband, [and] my children have no father,’” she told Page Six. “I have to stand tall and strong because this is my way of living. Stand tall, be positive, pick your battles, do the best you can and to live for today – not for tomorrow, for today. And know nothing is perfect; not everything you want will happen.”

Dion also threw herself into the fashion world after her losses. “I’ve always loved fashion, but I thought after turning 30 or 40 if it’s not happening with me and fashion, it’s never going to happen,” she told Australian magazine Stellar. “Well, guess what? It’s happening! It’s never too late to feel good about yourself [and] never too late to be presented as a best-dressed woman.”

In 2018 Dion even launched Célinununu, a gender-neutral clothing range for children. And according to promotional material about the line, Célinununu intends to “[liberate] children from the traditional roles of boy/girl.” The brand’s wares also aim to “[enable] younger people to grow on values of equality with the freedom to strengthen their own power of personality based on mutual respect.”

Image: Instagram/celinedion

But it wasn’t long after this that people began remarking on how Dion herself looked. Photos that the star posted on Instagram in January 2019, for instance, were met with a rather mixed response. “Goodness, what happened to you Celine??!? You look starved!” read one comment. Another individual rather bluntly wrote to the singer, “Need to put on a few pounds. Looks too skinny.”

Image: Instagram/celinedion

And at least one admirer seemed genuinely concerned for Dion. “Please gain a little weight, you are starting to look unhealthy. I don’t want to sound mean – I’m a big fan – but I just want you to live a very long time. Love you bunches,” the follower wrote underneath a picture of Dion in a power suit.

Others were rather more critical, however. One commenter wrote, for example, that Dion’s weight loss had “made her age 20 years from all the hanging skin.” And someone else referenced the fact that Dion had been made the new face of beauty brand L’Oreal Paris. “Don’t understand [L’Oreal], either,” they said on Instagram. “Not a good thing to promote [women who] look like they have [an] eating disorder.”

Image: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

Then, at the end of January 2019, Dion publicly criticized the people who had commented on her weight. “I’m doing this for me. I want to feel strong, beautiful, feminine and sexy,” she told the Dan Wootton Interview podcast. “If I like it, I don’t want to talk about it. Don’t bother. Don’t take a picture. If you like it, I’ll be there. If you don’t, leave me alone.”

Image: Instagram/celinedion

But even those words didn’t stop people commenting on Dion’s weight whenever she posted a new photo on Instagram. And some cruel remarks were aimed her way, too. “I’m in my mid-60s, and you have more wrinkles than I do. Gain some weight and get some mental help because you’ve turned into a freak since your husband passed on,” a particularly nasty troll wrote on her page in March 2019.

And in April 2019 Dion happened to bring up the subject of bullying when she was interviewed about her L’Oreal job. In a conversation with the media moderated by ABC’s Deborah Roberts, the singer discussed everything that she had had to overcome in order to gain self-confidence as an adult.

It turned out, too, that Dion had not loved her body as a teenager. “Even when I was so young, [I struggled with] not feeling confident, not feeling pretty [and] having problems with my teeth,” she explained to members of the press. “I was very, very skinny, and I was being bullied at school.” But although critics were obviously still around, they seemingly hadn’t completely dented the star’s self-esteem.

Indeed, Dion adamantly revealed to the media, “I’ve never felt this in charge. [And] when you do feel in charge, it gives you a sense of strength and power. I’ve never felt as beautiful, as strong – and I really think that the best is yet to come.”

During the event, Dion also took time to mention her late husband and how his belief in her had helped launch her career. “Angélil used to bring my parents and me here to Vegas. He was a gambler, and I’m so glad he was because no one was going to take a chance on a little girl who was thin and ugly,” she said.

Then, at around the same time as the press conference, Dion revealed what exactly had been making her lose weight. And, fortunately, the cause was nothing more sinister than a newfound love of ballet. “Dancing has been in my DNA all of my life,” Dion explained to People.

Image: Edward Berthelot/Getty Images

But while partaking in ballet was “a dream” for Dion, she also found it “so hard.” Nevertheless, the star was giving her all. “I do this [ballet practice] four times a week,” Dion added to the magazine. “People say, ‘She’s a lot thinner,’ but I’m working hard. I like to move, and [weight loss] comes with it.”

Image: Instagram/celinedion

Yet even despite this explanation, Dion’s Instagram account still received its fair share of messages criticizing her size. When the star posted photos depicting her getting ready for the Met Gala, for example, she received comments including “Eat something please” and “Lost too much weight, looks like a skeleton.”

Image: Instagram/celinedion

Some fans came to Dion’s defense, however. “Y’all here complaining about how thin she is, but her voice still rocks. How would you feel [if] someone comments on your post and judge[s] you for any reason?” one person wrote. “People [are] concerned if you are too thin [and] concerned if you are too thick. She looks pretty good to me and happy,” wrote another.

And one Instagram picture in particular appeared to draw a lot of attention. In June 2019 Dion uploaded a shot in which she sports a T-shirt bearing the acronym “FOMO,” with the image captioned, “It means Fear of Missing Out, or does it?” Yet while the post itself seemed completely innocuous, commenters turned once again to discussing Dion’s weight.

One follower wrote, for example, “Fear of missing out or fear of passing out? Someone please feed Celine!” Others seemed to assume that the star had an eating disorder. “She is ill and needs help! Terrible!” another individual opined.

And a further concerned commenter wrote, “I just hope that [Dion] stays healthy for her sons. I have heard of people losing appetite and their interest in life after the death of a loved one.” Yet the same person went on to admit that they had “no idea what’s going on in her life, in her mind or body” – and that was true for all the critics.

Image: Marc Piasecki/Getty Images

Yes, perhaps the only person who truly knows what’s going on with Dion’s health is the singer herself. And maybe fans should take her at her word when she speaks about how well she believes she’s doing now. In May 2019, for instance, a now fiftysomething Dion seemingly professed to being comfortable in her own skin.

Image: Pierre Suu/Getty Images

“Some people get a little scared about turning 50. I’m very happy at 51,” Dion revealed in an interview with Vogue. “I’m more experienced, and I’m more active now – with my dancing, my working out and my performing – than I’ve ever been in my life.”

Then when Vogue asked Dion, “What are some of the ways that you’ve been impressed by your own strength?” the singer answered, “I wouldn’t say that I’m impressed, but I do feel that I’ve got this added responsibility to raise my children. I also have to make more decisions about my career, which is a new challenge. I think I’m doing okay in both departments.”

Image: Edward Berthelot/Getty Images

And when Dion was questioned about her aspirations for the next decade, the star explained that her priority was to keep her children “happy and healthy.” She added, however, “I’m not planning on slowing down, that’s for sure! I want to keep creating, I like to stay busy, and, of course, I want to have fun.”

Perhaps in the spirit of keeping busy, then, Dion appeared at Paris Fashion Week in July 2019. And while the famous songstress once again experienced body-shaming, with Radar Online calling her “scary skinny,” for instance, she has definitely proved that she can take such criticism in her stride.
