They were Hollywood’s favorite couple, but even public adoration couldn’t save Chris Pratt and Anna Faris’ marriage. Now – one month after their shocking separation – Faris has spoken out about her former partner. And her revelations might surprise fans of the once inseparable couple.

If any celebrity couple seemed destined to be together, it was undoubtedly Anna Faris and Chris Pratt. Faris, a comedic actress known for films like Scary Movie, had developed a lovably ditzy screen persona. Likewise, Pratt would earn a down-to-earth reputation for playing adorable everyman Andy in Parks and Recreation.

Indeed, when the two met on the set of 2007 romantic comedy Take Me Home Tonight, it was as if yin and yang had come together. “It was like magnets,” Pratt told Elle in 2015. “Our personalities meshed, she was a goofball, she liked to have fun, it was impossible to offend her.”

Though Faris was married to Ben Indra at the time, she and Pratt formed an instant connection. So when the marriage broke down shortly after filming wrapped, Pratt let his intentions be known. “The day that she told me she was leaving her husband, I knew that I was going to marry her,” he revealed.

As time went on, the pair realized they were more in sync then they first thought. Not only did they both have matching personalities, but they weirdly shared numerous similarities. For example, the pair unwittingly grew up in almost the same neighborhood and had a mutual interest in collecting dead insects.

Naturally, the two became inseparable and – after a short two years of dating – they married in July 2009. However, their decision to wed was far from planned out. In fact, Faris and Pratt only came to the conclusion on the spur of the moment during a trip to Indonesia.

“I was looking for chicken broth on the room service menu and saw the hotel also did weddings,” Faris revealed to Stylist in 2014. “ Chris said, ‘Let’s do it.’ So the staff found us some traditional Balinese clothing and a local priest. We had no idea what was going on but we came back married.”

Despite their affinity for each other, the couple’s relationship wasn’t immune from strain. In 2012, their little boy Jack arrived nine weeks early resulting in a tumultuous period for the new parents. “We were scared for a long time,” Pratt told People in 2014. “We prayed a lot.”

Like any couple in the spotlight, the two actors had to deal with their fair share of press attention. And though Faris tried not to let “tabloid s***” get to her, she revealed in 2016 that some rumors of infidelity took their toll. “It made me feel incredibly insecure,” she said on her podcast Anna Faris is Unqualified.

Still, the pair brushed off any unwanted speculation and emerged as one of Hollywood’s best-loved couples. From lighting up red carpet receptions to jointly endorsing charities like the 22 Push-Up Challenge, Faris and Pratt seemed solid as a rock. But last month, the couple made a shocking and unexpected announcement.

In August, Pratt posted a statement on his social media accounts. “Anna and I are sad to announce we are legally separating. We tried hard for a long time, and we’re really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward.”

Of course, the pair’s break up resulted in much heartache amongst their fans. As could only be expected, many took to social media expressing sadness over the decision to drift apart. However, others were angered and some even cast the blame on Pratt’s Passengers co-star Jennifer Lawrence for playing a part in the separation.

While the pair’s uncoupling has been the source of much press attention, Pratt and Faris have naturally remained tightlipped on the situation. Nevertheless it seems that Faris has made the first step to discussing her separation in public. And her memoir Unqualified might just set the record straight.

Due for a late-October release, Unqualified was written before the couple’s split. As a result, the book’s foreword was written by Pratt himself. But despite this support, Faris remains brutally honest about their relationship within the book – to the point where she claims that Pratt was never her “best friend.”

In an excerpt published by Cosmopolitan, Faris lays bare her thoughts on her and her ex’s friendship. “I was once told that I didn’t need a tight group of girlfriends because Chris should be my best friend,” she asserts. “But I never bought that. The idea of your mate being your best friend – it’s overhyped.”

Though it might seem harsh, Faris’ statement actually ties into a much broader examination of friendship in general. Elsewhere in the passage, the actress reveals her struggles in high school at the hands of female classmates who bullied her on a regular basis. Consequently, it caused Faris to seek out male friendship instead.

However, this in turn led to its own brand of dissatisfaction. “I didn’t realize until later how lame I sounded, bragging as though having a lot of girlfriends was a bad thing,” she writes. “I was selling my own gender down the river, and I wasn’t even getting any fulfillment from the relationships with those dudes.”

Eventually, Faris overcame her initial trepidations and came to “realize just how important female relationships are.” Now, the star boasts a “handful of women I count as confidantes,” including fellow actress Allison Janney. And this explains why she never saw Pratt as her BFF.

“I really believe that your partner serves one purpose and each friend serves another,” Faris adds. “To be honest, I think the notion of best friends in general is messed up though. It puts so much pressure on any one person, when I truly believe it’s okay to have intimacy with different people in different ways.”

While it may not be the bombshell fans were expecting, the star’s admission at least suggests that her and Pratt’s relationship dynamics weren’t what many assumed. Faris may be waiting for her book’s release to disclose more shockers. But for the time being, let’s hope this pair can handle their current separation in an amicable way.
