19 Celeb Couples Who Seem To Believe In Open Marriages

The secret to a successful showbiz relationship can vary from couple to couple. Indeed, while some only have eyes for their spouses, others are more than content to let the occasional third – or fourth – party enter the fray. Here’s a look, then, at 19 stars who are apparently advocates of open relationships…

19. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are undeniably the most high-profile couple to publicly hint at an open marriage. And, following much speculation surrounding the nature of their relationship, Jada told Howard Stern in 2015 that husband of nearly 20 years Will has “all the freedom in the world.” She went on, “As long as Will can look himself in the mirror and be OK, I’m good.”

18. Dolly Parton and Carl Dean

Dolly Parton and husband Carl Dean have long faced rumors that their 50-year marriage may be of the open variety. “I don’t want to know it, if he’s cheating on me,” the country legend admitted to the Daily Mail in 2007, adding, “If I’m cheating on him, he wouldn’t want to know it. And if we do, if that’s what’s making it work, then that’s fine too.”

17. Mo’Nique and Sidney Hicks

Contrary to popular belief, it was Mo’Nique who instigated an open marriage with husband Sidney Hicks and not the other way around. “When I say I’m in an open marriage, it was not my husband’s idea,” the comedian clarified on Periscope in 2015, adding that she wanted to instigate a more open relationship rather than cheat on her husband of ten years.

16. Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman has been more than happy to discuss his open relationship with wife of five years and former Dresden Dolls frontwoman Amanda Palmer. To that end, then, in 2013 the writer told The Guardian, “We would not allow another relationship to imperil what we have. We talk. And talk. And talk. And hug a lot. And talk some more.”

15. Andrei Kirilenko and Masha Lopatova

Basketball star Andrei Kirilenko has a rather unique arrangement with his wife Masha Lopatova. Yes, the former Brooklyn Nets player has been granted permission to sleep with another woman once a year. “What’s forbidden is always desirable,” pop star Lopatova explained to ESPN The Magazine back in 2006. However, at the time, Kirilenko claimed that he had no intention of actually using his annual hall pass.

And Kirilenko isn’t the only NBA star who appears to have been given the freedom to stray. According to an unnamed basketball player, Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James – who married his high school sweetheart Savannah back in 2013 – is just one of many married men in the sport who are in open relationships.

13. Rachael Ray and John Cusimano

Celebrity chef Rachael Ray has never addressed the persistent rumors that her marriage to entertainment lawyer John Cusimano is open. However, she was quick to brand claims that Cusimano – whom she wed in 2005 – was a regular at Manhattan swingers club Checkmate as a “pack of lies.”

Ethan Hawke has never been afraid to let his views on extra-marital affairs be known. The actor – who has been married to his children’s former nanny Ryan Shawhughes since 2008 – told magazine Mr Porter, “People have such a childish view of monogamy and fidelity.” He added in the 2013 interview, “[It’s] ‘He’s cheated so he’s bad, she’s cheated so she’s bad,’ as opposed to a recognition that our species is not monogamous.”

11. Alan Cumming and Grant Shaffer

Alan Cumming has claimed that he and husband of nine years Grant Shaffer have a great sex life – but has nevertheless admitted that they may end up looking elsewhere in the future. “I don’t think it’s realistic to think that we are only going to have sex with each other for the rest of our lives,” the actor divulged to FourTwoNine magazine in 2014. “And I don’t think that’s the worst thing in the world.”

Few couples in the public eye have been more honest about their open marriage than Robert Crumb and fellow cartoonist wife of 38 years Aline, with both parties admitting to enjoying long-term affairs. Indeed, when asked about Aline’s other partner Christian Coudurès in a 2007 interview with The New York Times in 2007, Robert divulged, “Between Christian and I, we kind of make an ideal husband… but if she ever started making comparisons about our lovemaking technique, I might get jealous.”

9. Emma Thompson and Greg Wise

It’s a little unclear whether Emma Thompson and husband Greg Wise – who got hitched back in 2003 – enjoy an open marriage. It seems, however, that the acclaimed actress certainly doesn’t appear to have any qualms about the concept, having once even branded monogamy as an “odd state” during a 2013 webchat with British parenting site Mumsnet.

8. Akon and Latrice Thiam

Chart-topper Akon also doesn’t believe that monogamy is particularly realistic – but only apparently when it applies to him, not his wife. Yep, the Senegalese-born star – who is married to Latrice Thiam but reportedly has six children by three different women – told TMZ in 2013, “Women aren’t built to mate with more than one party… men are.”

7. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell

Rumors surrounding the nature of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn’s relationship have circulated for decades. And the actress’ former husband Bill Hudson added fuel to the fire in 2011 by releasing a damning tell-all book in which he describes Hawn as a “movie star who enjoyed having open relationships.”

Actor Misha Collins’ wife Victoria Vantoch revealed in her 2007 tome The Threesome Handbook that she and her Supernatural star husband had an open marriage. 4. Tom Ford and Richard Buckley

Despite once claiming that his marriage to Richard Buckley is strictly monogamous, fashion designer-turned-filmmaker Tom Ford later appeared to imply that that was no longer the case. “I think that monogamy is artificial,” he revealed during an interview with Arena magazine. “I do not think it’s something that comes naturally to us.”

3. T-Pain and Amber Najm

“We didn’t come up on it, like, ‘Oh baby, I want to go do this with other girls.’ It was her choice,” rapper T-Pain told TMZ of his wife of 13 years Amber Najm’s decision to initiate an open marriage. However, the arrangement comes with one stipulation: Najm has to approve the chosen girl and be present at all times.

2. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

They may be two of the most beautiful people in Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie only have eyes for each other. “I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship,” Jolie – who married Pitt in 2014 – told German magazine Das Neue in 2009. “Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together.”

1. Larry and Shawn King

Despite moving onto his eighth wife, Shawn, in 1997, talk show host Larry King still doesn’t appear to be content with his lot. According to one of his many exes, Julia Alexander King, the talk show host told her that both he and his current spouse have an arrangement where they can see other people.
