Hollywood has often been criticized for its under-representation of Asian talent; there are, however, more celebrities with eastern roots than you may think. Take these 20 famous faces, for example – all of whom have kept their eastern ethnicities largely under wraps.

20. Rob Schneider

Chances are you may have spotted Rob Schneider’s Asian heritage on screen. That’s because the actor and comedian’s half-Filipino mother, Pilar Monroe, has made cameos in several of his movies, including The Animal, Deuce Bigalow and The Hot Chick.

19. Mark-Paul Gosselaar

Who would have guessed that Saved by the Bell’s blue-eyed, blonde-haired pin-up has such an interesting ethnic background? Well, not only is Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s father Hans of Dutch, Jewish and German descent, but his mother Pauline van den Brink, who has Dutch-Indonesian roots, hails from Bali.

Karen O is so proud of her Asian heritage that the success of “Gangnam Style” brought tears to her eyes. Indeed, the singer, whose mother is from Seoul, South Korea, admitted to having a “strange reaction” to the song’s popularity, what with her having waited years for Korean pop culture to reach the mainstream.

Best-known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Bullets Over Broadway, Jennifer Tilly has a heritage almost as unique as her trademark squeaky voice. The actress’ mother, Patricia, is of Finnish, Irish and First Nations descent, while her father Harry has Chinese ancestry.

Kristin Kreuk faced criticism from certain quarters when she was cast as martial artist Chun Li in 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. But, because her Indonesian-born mom has Chinese roots, the actress has stronger ties to the character’s homeland than many realized.

Enrique Iglesias’ Spanish father Julio is pretty well known. Few, however, know that the heartthrob singer himself is partly Filipino, with his socialite and TV presenter mom Maria Isabel Preysler-Arrastia having been born and raised in Manila before moving to Madrid.

“I love being a Filipina,” singer and actress Vanessa Hudgens told Filipino newspaper the Inquirer. “There aren’t very many Filipino girls in the industry. So being able to stand up and be that girl makes me proud.” The High School Musical star was born to an Irish-Native American father and a Filipino-Chinese-Spanish mother.

Who knew that The New Adventures of Superman star Dean Cain’s original surname was Tanaka? The actor’s biological father is half Japanese, although he himself was actually raised by Christopher Cain after the American movie director married Dean’s mom, Sharon.

“It’s funny because some people know it right away,” Sharon Leal told BET.com in 2012. “They’ll say, ‘Something else is going on there and it’s Asian. I don’t know where in Asia, but something’s happening.’” Well, the Asian side of the Dreamgirls star comes from her Filipino mother, Angelita.

The supermodel known as Naomi Campbell could have been the supermodel known as Naomi Ming, which was the family name of her paternal grandmother. British-born Campbell, however, never had anything to do with her father, who left her mom before the supermodel was born.

7. Olivia Munn

Olivia Munn spent much of her childhood at a Tokyo air base, but this isn’t her only connection to the Far East. The actress’ mother was born and raised in Vietnam; the Vietnam War, however, resulted in her fleeing to Oklahoma during the 1970s.

Metallica got the whole of Manila rocking when the metal band made its maiden visit to the Philippines back in 1993. And the gig was no doubt of special importance to lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, whose mother, Teofila Oyao – known to friends and family as “Chefela” – is of Filipino descent.

5. Nicole Scherzinger

Nicole Scherzinger could give Reeves and Tilly a run for their money in the complex-family-tree stakes. The former Pussycat Doll was born in Honolulu to a Hawaiian-Ukrainian mother and a Filipino father, though she later adopted the name of her German-American stepfather, Gary.

4. Hailee Steinfeld

“One thing I learned very early on about Filipinos and being Filipino,” Hailee Steinfeld told Philippines-based news website Rappler in April 2016, “is how much passion there is and how much sort of pride there is in being Filipino.” The True Grit actress’ maternal grandfather was half Filipino, half African-American.

Scottish singer KT Tunstall – who burst on to the scene in the mid 2000s – was raised by a physics lecturer and a primary school teacher in the historic county of Fife. However, she also has roots in the Far East; her half-Chinese dancer mom put her up for adoption when she was just 18 days old.

Michelle Branch, who also found fame in the Noughties, is another singer-songwriter with a surprise Asian connection. The star’s grandmother was born in Indonesia’s East Java province; during the Second World War she was held in a Japanese prisoner camp, though she later relocated to the Netherlands.
